Skype Sees Surge in Activity
It's all in the numbers
by KathrynV Sunday 24-Feb-2008 tags: business · VoIP
2008 predictions had Skype all but disappearing this year. Facing problems with going mobile and complaints resulting from an increase in spam, Skype has been dealing with difficulties all year. However, the VoIP provider has also seen several successes that indicate it’s probably not going anywhere bad anytime soon.

Earlier this month, Skype announced that they had reached a milestone in serving 100 billion minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls. These are all free calls connecting people via Skype over the last five years. This week, they announced another achievement when they counted 12 million Skype users all online at the very same time. Over a quarter billion people reportedly use Skype.

Re: Skype out ?

Skypeout is still pretty cheap $3/month.
I let my account lapse (and disabled the skype service app).
I may pick it up again for the video conference piece.

Re: Skype out ?

Video conference piece? You've been listening to (and believing) Skype's never-ending (empty) hype. They have no "video conferencing piece", and they are not likely to have one anytime soon. Based on their previous track record, if and when they finally do attempt to add video conferencing it will be horribly broken, and totally dependent on some specific hardware configurations.

You would be much better served to have a look at some of the programs which already have video conferencing which works very well - ooVoo (free) and SightSpeed (subscription). They have actually been doing something that Skype only emits at lot of hot air about, for quite some time now.

Skype users

"Over a quarter million people reportedly use Skype."

I'd hope so, seeing as the story also notes 12 million users were online at once. Unless each person corresponds to 48 Skype accounts, how can their not be 250,000 people who use skype?

Love Skype

I love skype because of its ease of use, and a lot of people I know have it, but it lacked multi-user video conferencing. This is why I went to ooVoo, just as easy to use as Skype, but allows up to 6 people on a video conference. I would suggest if you need it to check into them. I can remember having Skype for years just so I could talk to my friends and family that are out of state. Now with cell phones having so many minutes, skype could be hurting, but the international calls are still way better on skype. But enough of my rambling...

Re: Love Skype

As I read these posts, I am on Skype with my wife in California and I am in Shenzhen China. I call her using my skype out minutes. Then she calls me back using free calls. What a great service. Rumor's of Skype's demise are greatly exaggerated. And that makes me happy

Skype Price Increase

When Skype raised their price I began looking for a new company. What other VOIP you recommend?

Re: Skype Price Increase

I recently compared the prices of Skype, SightSpeed, Gizmo and ooVoo. I found that Skype had consistently the highest per-minute cost, AND they are the ONLY one of the four who charge a "connect fee" on every call.

Re: Skype Price Increase

I was introduced to Skype while on a business trip to Denmark last month. I was impressed by the ease and quality of the calls.

I bought $10.00 worth of time and three us made many, many call back to the US. I still have over $6.00 left in my account.

We now use Skype to Skype for free to our offices and customers in China, Mexico, and Denmark- with more to come.

Even using prepaid credits to non-Skype people, it's a very inexpensive way to communicate.

Domestically, we all have plenty of cellphone minutes, including free mobile to mobile. But for international, Skype is great.

Good gawd how cheap do you want a service to be?

Hey, I have my issues with Skype/eBay as much as the next guy...but I save $1000s every year with Skype. I spend what is it $36/yr for SkypePro now then I pay $24/yr for each Skype in number...and that is ALL I PAY...I have three Skype in numbers around the US so friends and family members can call me free from their landlines and I can make all the calls I want w/o charge.

The entire package I use costs me about $100/yr. I have Millenicom EVDO Mobile Broadband for $50/mo so no need for a cell phone as anywhere there is Sprint service I'll find MBB and can call out using my Nokia N800 via my Cradlepoint router and Franklin USB EVDO modem.

But the Skype deal does not suck. Sure there are other free or seemingly free real VoIP solutions but then you run into the tech issues of jitter and what not which for MBB can be a killer.

And thanks to the CTR350 router I can use my laptop for web browsing or whatever AND AT THE SAME TIME use the internet tablet for the phone call.

Nope, I can complain about a lot of the changes since eBay bought them, but the price is fine where it is right now. I mean I use it daily for hours and want them to stay in business so a small amount of cash from me is fine...I see direct value from that investment. Plus if you are smart it's deductible anyway so who cares?

BUT I worry if form holds true eBay will keep rising prices as the service becomes more invasive and ubiquitous...that will not work for me. We'll see how things go with the new CEO...

I want $14.95 a year with unlimited calling in the USA and Canada... for another $100 you might as well get Vontage.,

Just because you are a fish and you think it is a good deal does not mean it is a good deal to the intelligent buyer.

Re: Good gawd how cheap do you want a service to be?

lawd save us from the petulant 12-year olds and the 70yr old wheezer geezers who in a nutshell argue over $0.25 on postage as well as want everything free and feel arguing over <= $20/YEAR is worth the effort or put another way < $2/mo is big money and must involve endless hand wringing.

Geeze even FreeJack is going to be priced @ $19.95/yr...now there would be something funny, Driving down the freeway talking over your old home telephone...

love it

I use the 35/year unlimited outgoing plan. I was paying about 40/month in overage fees on my cellphone, but with the SkypeOut, I average around 1000 minutes/month for my business, calling all over the USA, and It's been great! I'm using it on my Sprint EVDO Data card, and latency is no problem. Calls are almost crystal clear.

For 30/year, I think I get more then my monies worth, and have saved well over $1000 in the last few months.

Hell, had to call customer service for a few other things, as well as some other long business calls, in 2 days I had racked up over 450 minutes during the day, where I would have used ALL of my anytime minutes up for the month!
