But won't deploy until 2009...
(old news - 10:27AM Friday Feb 29 2008)
tags: business · bandwidth · cable · networking · Charter Pipeline
Comcast is leading the charge in DOCSIS 3.0 deployment, saying they'll have 20% of their footprint wired by the end of this year. Most other providers, however, seem fairly content to take a wait-and-see attitude on the technology (particularly if FiOS has seen limited deployment in their territory). While many Charter customers are still waiting for Charter to unveil their DOCSIS 1.x 16Mbps tier, the company says they'll start testing DOCSIS 3.0 technology in the second half of this year. Actual deployment won't occur until 2009.

Actually, they are not behind, they do offer faster service that lots of DSL providers, and still faster than lots of cable providers.

What good is providing it if you just offer speeds that other standards could do easy enough..

Hmmmm.

"Comcast is leading the charge in DOCSIS 3.0 deployment, saying they'll have 20% of their footprint wired by the end of this year. "

"Charter says they'll start testing DOCSIS 3.0 technology in the second half of this year. Actual deployment won't occur until 2009."

What is your definition of "behind"? Because when someone else is ahead of you that means you are BEHIND. At least to me.

Re: Uhh! OK!!

Comcast isn't the only cable company genius. there is several others plus all the smaller cable companies. so they are ahead of the game.

If you're in a race with 10 people and you come in second you are BEHIND someone. Please look up the definition of BEHIND. 2nd place is the 1st loser. Congrats Charter!

And no Comcast isn't the only cable company they only represent 27% of it. Sorrrrrry.

Re: Uhh! OK!!

I'm sorry you took the word BEHIND so literally but you get my point. behind in alot of peoples mind would be ATT since they won't spend money on fiber to the home. sometimes you can't help igronant people.

They are not behind, because while some claim to support it by "so and so year" they are still going to offer same speeds. Its the same with going from DOCSIS 1x to 2x.

Each standard can say "Up to So-and-so speed" improvement, but cable providers never will offer said speeds.

Pretty much all the DOCSIS press releases are just that..press releases that mean squat.

That's great thinking BF69, that is, if Comcast and Charter were direct competitors. As usual sweetheart, your hatred of Charter has clouded your brain.

Charter does suck but at least they are saying something

At least they said something. Has TW announced their long term plans outside of possibly cappping?

If they aren't bought by then

Charter is definitely never going to be a market leader.

They are no Comcast, Cox, or TW in terms of customers. Why do they need to be a market leader? They are a pretty small company in the grand scheme of things.

All this negativity...

I admit, I like bashing on Charter too sometimes. The past performance in my area was pretty sub-par in years past, but in recent times they have really gotten their act together.

What is different about Charter vs Comcast? Well I for one actually think Charter may be BETTER than Comcast! Oh noes - that statement totally goes against BBR rulahs!!! omgwtfbbq1@#$!@#$

REASONS WHY CHARTER IS BETTER THAN COMCAST:

A. They do not throttle/block/reset or in any way inhibit torrents.

B. NO CAPS!

C. For better (in my mind) or worse, PowerBoost doesn't exist (yet) with Charter. This is actually okay with me because it won't throw off speed tests or allow them any excuse not to give me full bandwidth. In my opinion, PB becomes a detriment in heavily loaded areas because even though the "peak" speed may seem acceptable (on speed tests) the actual sustained performance can be much less. PB is just a trick to allow them to oversell their nodes more. Now if you're in a Comcast customer in a lightly loaded area, PB can be a blessing - but in the loaded down area it just masks the true poor performance.

D. (and this one applies to me, but no all Charter areas) I get my full 10/1 connnection 24/7/365 with LOW latency that rarely fluctuates more than 1-2ms.

----------

If Charter can keep up with the "hands off" approach to throttling & caps, then Charter *may* atually end up having the best DOCSIS3 out there!

If you're on a oversubscribed node, powerboost doesn't activate. I know because im on a loaded node and have very seldomly gotten PB to activate.

Charter not that bad

I am happy to see they are working towards DOCSIS 3.0.
Given the nearly half billion dollar loss last year, I hope they can afford it.
Charter could be better, but it is not that bad.
I live in a small town that doesn't always get the newer features (no video on demand yet, for example.) Still, they did a free upgrade from 3 to 5 mpbs, with only $5 a month more for 10mbs. I have had problems with their network keeping this speed, but right now it is very fast (although in a hour it may drop to under 1mbps.)

Consider the only other internet options are Clear-wire (gasp)
or local Fairpoint Communications DSL which provides 768kpbs/128kpbs for $39.95 a month or 1.5mps/512kbps for $69.95 but you HAVE to also by phone service to get this service at all. Rather than get local phone service I just use cell phones.

Their HD tv is nothing to brag about, but at least it is offered and they don't required 2 year contracts like some satellite companies do. For a town without much competition they do fairly well.

I still think our entire country needs some low cost service in the $10 to $20 a month range for those who can't afford $60 a month. Most places offer a lifeline phone service for low income people. Just like universal mail service united the country, lack of affordable internet access may be making us a nation of haves and have nots. As more people go under during the current recession, how many will have to drop their $100 to $150 a month cable tv and internet service? It seems many schools now assume you have internet access. Many public and government services are best accessed via the internet instead of driving to a local office (or perhaps not so local.)

If it WERE legal, I would happily let a few neighbors without internet access in on a small portion of my bandwidth (like 1mbs/128kbps) if I had a router that could enforce it. At that low speed those who can afford it would buy high speed, but those who couldn't and are next door could have some of mine. A volunteer program would avoid the support costs that make it uneconomic for big companies to provide low cost services. I still wonder why the local phone company can't charge under $20 for its very slow DSL.
Better yet, given the increased number of people dropping local wired phone connections, they should include it FREE with their phone service, and charge a little more for higher speeds.

(just the ramblings of an old man who first dialed into a computer at 10 characters per second with a teletype. Before that is was punched cards.)

Maybe I should run for office on a platform for internet access in every home instead of a chicken in every pot

DOCSIS 0.0

Still waiting on Charter to add ANY speed HSI here... An improvement to nothing would be anything.
