Well, sort of...

That new bendable fiber Verizon recently purchased from Corning is about to get some serious use. Verizon says they've struck deals to service one of Manhattan's largest apartment complexes (the 110-Building, 11,232-Unit Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village) with FiOS. The limitations of older fiber made installing in apartments tricky -- and that's a problem given a fifth of Verizon's customers live in them. Corning's new Clearcurve fiber can be bent and spooled without signal degradation. Broader NYC deployment remains bogged down in committee as city council members debate Verizon's plan for selective deployment.

big fiber.

stuy-town is a huge win, and it's all within a small geographic area. 288's into each building!

waver?

Is there an individual video franchise agreement/waver in lieu of a NYC-wide agreement or will they forgo selling TV service?

If VZ just pays off the city council, aka the mob's hand-picked slobs, FIOS is in NYC.

The only person the mob can't stand is Hillary.

No. TV isn't part of the deal until the pols get off their backsides.

But at least these 2 apartment complexes will have a lot of competition - not something everybody can claim. I'll bet these people can get great deals from the providers.

Verizon has no video franchise agreement with the city, so it can provide only Internet and phone service over fiber. It is negotiating to get permission to provide the full "triple play" that includes cable TV.

Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village, which have 11,232 units, are already served by two cable companies: Time Warner Cable Inc. and RCN Corp. Both provide triple-play services.

Kudos to Verizon...

They're really taking broadband to the next level and creating some real competition in the industry.

This new bendable fiber is a real innovation and is going to let them light New Yorks Apts up in a whole new way.
Many will wind up with real choice between companies like OOL and Verizon and TW.
Who REALLY winds up winning..is the consumer as this drives competition..innovation..speeds..and pricing.

Our CHOICE should NOT HAVE to be between fast..and mediocre to slow. All of us should be able to say to our telco or cable co..adios..because there is another alternative if we get poor service.

It's GREAT that any of us can say we're happy..or even thrilled with our provider. But any provider can turn on us..making our individual experience problematic.
CHOICE..is the final bottom line that can correct something like that. And VERIZON..is creating real choice for consumers in the areas they're now competing with the incumbent cable co's.

Sometimes it will be fiber all the way to the apartment and sometimes not. Here is the full quote:

A tenant in Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village who orders FiOS may find that the company doesn't run fiber all the way to the apartment, because that entails wall-mounting a box in the apartment, and not all layouts have the space for it, Mr. Cevis said.

In those cases, Verizon will run fiber to the basement, and use a phone line to carry Internet data the last part of the way. Coaxial cable will be used for video when that becomes available. Subscribers will be able to get the fastest current Internet plan, with downloads of 50 megabits per second, but may not be able to take advantage of future speed increases available to subscribers with fiber all the way to the home.

Verizon's first choice is to take the fiber all the way to the apartment, Mr. Cevis said.

Location of this new Fios rollout

These people are lucky with all this competition for their internet and phone services. And maybe TV soon as well.

Don't Confuse TV Franchise Agreement W/ Internet Deployment

This is the second front-page news item within the past few months that refers to the TV Franchise agreement, and confuses it with deployment of FiOS fiber services in general. Why are the two issues so hard to separate? I understand that the TV Franchise Agreement talks include demands by some of the politicians that deployment of FiOS be done for the entire city, but can't we get our facts straight first, and read news articles that make sense of the situation?
"Broader NYC deployment remains bogged down in committee...", that sentence makes it seem that deployment of all FiOS services is dependent upon some political process - its not. FiOS is being rolled out in the 5 boros (I have it now in Brooklyn), and the politicians are NOT required for Verizon to light any more neighborhoods. What IS bogged down is the TV Franchise Agreement, and the politicians are dragging their asses.

argh

I just wish one day we have something similar to a future as shown in the star trek series... where money is not the ultimate driving force...
I simply do not understand why speed comes at such a high cost when its simply information... yes i know that is how things work...
In my opinion anything connecting to the internet should be free... but alas we are far from that!

so close

I live half a block from Stuy town and I refuse to move there (overpriced and even farther from the subway). This is extremely frustrating that they're getting FiOS and not my building.
