| as a user of an iphone I know I'm going to be waiting to see how much improvement there is over the current iphone. As a user currently, 3g is only so enticing when I can do alot already. There will just need to be some killer apps or features to make me think about switching my phone out. (video calling doesn't count, thats kinda dumb since most people won't be able to make or answer those) | |

Think of this way, if you're on a 56k modem dialup, would you say: show me some killer apps before I consider broadband connection?
I've experienced both EDGE and 3G speed, there is no way I'm going to pay for an EDGE only device/service.

| Good news: I live in Canada where data plans are terrible. Since I only have 12 MB of data per month, it's better for me to stick with my EDGE iPhone. Upgrading to a 3G capable one will just lead me into experiencing thousands of dollars in overage charges..... | |

| Odd Aren't most iPhone users on a 2 year contract? I wonder if they think it will be worth the $200 or so premium needed to break their existing contracts. -- This isn't fair! I was only supposed to hate just ONE presidential candidate! | |

You just don't get any equipment discounts. I don't know if they offered any discounts on the iPhone anyway.

I don't know if they offered any discounts on the iPhone anyway. iPhone contracting is weird. Even if you just got a brand new phone, you can still get an iPhone and it won't break your contract. You get the discount no matter what, and can even order it from the apple store. But, you have to sign a 2 year contract (regardless of your current contract status) in order to activate the iPhone. On top of that, signing the new contract doesn't mess with your normal phone upgrade eligibility.

| Reception (Signal strength) I find the iPhone lacking in Reception (Signal strength)
My wife and I own two of the phones (8 gig & 4 gig). In the "city" we live in the reception is OK. Not stellar but serviceable. Now down at the lake house it's really BAD!!
I also have two Motorola Flip Phones and have no reception issues with them. Only reason we keep the Motorola's is to be able to take calls at the lake house.
IPhone 1 bar - (sometimes) Motorola 2-3+ Bars (always)
Da - Same AT&T network!!
Also the Motorola has the ability to use an external antenna as a backup so we use one of the "cb" style antennas and go from 2-3 bars to full scale. Be nice is the iPhone would allow an external antenna...
But the gist of my comments is the iPhone reception leaves a lot to be desired. Sitting on the porch at the lake house the wife can take and make calls (with or without the extra antenna) on her Motorola phone. I can't do squat with my iPhone. No web, no email, no phone service. I grab the other Motorola phone and it works. Least I can take and make calls..
Unless At&T plans on beefing up their signal strength I don't care about 3G and it's not worth the $399+ to swap out phone for another one with crappy reception!!
All the hype is not worth beans if you can't use the phone to web surf or even talk on it. Like to reduce my phone expense (2x $9.99+tax) but so far the iPhone is not a suitable replacement.

| Re: 3G iPhone said by squiggie :I have just purchased an iPhone less than a month ago. Will apple be giving an all fairness rebate like they did around christmas. Doubt it. There has been plenty of speculation surround the 3g iPhone, possibly for some months now. Even though we can't credit speculation as fact, we certianly cannot expect Apple to credit individuals who purchased a device only 10 or so months in existance a rebate because the products life cycle has ended.
On the same token, the rebate for early adopters was only the result of public outcry because no one predicted that the price would drop however many dollars, which was only speculation in and of itself because folks thought the price point was too high (although people were still willing to pay).

| Re: 3G iPhone I do understand the difference between the christmas rebate and the 3g iphone. BUT Apple has not stated that there is going to be a 3g iphone officially yet. So if they do release in June at the conference, there must be something they will have to do for the customers that have just purchased the 1st gen model. Maybe I am being all too hopeful. | |

| Unlocking would be pointless IMO There is no point in unlocking a 3G iphone for T-Mobile because it wouldn't work with T-Mobile's 3G when the release it because T-Mobile's 3G works on 1700mhz/2100mhz and they are the only ones using 1700mhz downlink for 3G, AT&T only uses 850mhz/1900mhz and the rest of the world uses 2100 so we will probaly see a triband 850/1900/2100 3G bands and quad band GSM. -- I get 29 MPG in my Toyota Highlander Hybrid! | |
