671,000 homes connected in last 6 months
(old news - 03:42PM Wednesday Apr 26 2006)
tags: Fiber · coverage · stats
The Fiber to the Home Council and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) released statistics today on the number of homes served by fiber connections. According to the new data (pdf), there are now 936 communities in 47 states served by fiber to the home (FTTH), with 280 of those added since last October. 671,000 homes were connected to fiber in the past six months, according to the groups' press release.

"Over the last few years, federal policymakers have recognized the value of removing barriers to next generation broadband deployment, such as lifting unbundling obligations on FTTH," states Matt Flanigan, TIA president. "These decisions are having a very positive effect, although we still have a long way to go to ensure that all Americans have the bandwidth they need for tomorrow's applications."

Re: More Fiber

648,000 divided by (300 million people / 2.5 people a household) for .5% of homes added in the last 6 monthes?

Also, the article says 4 million homes, (3.3%-ish of total) have been "passed" by fiber total. Does "passed" means it's actually available for someone to purchase, or something less stringent?

Most of the new fiber is Verizons FTTP expansion.

Huh, you and me both. Although, the "county" is laying fiber for the camera's at stop lights. UGH! All that fiber for that. But I couldn't imagine laying all that, spending all the money for traffic cameras, guess we will see

Take at least 10 yrs to get to more than 50% of homes

It is nice to see progress is being made, but it will still take at least 10 yrs to get to more than 50% of homes at this rate. Running FTTH is an extremely laborious, time consuming, and expensive project. The companies involved have to make money as they proceed in order to fund continuing upgrades. It took decades to wire America for POTS. Switching to fiber could take as long.

10 years is a liberal estimate. I could see it taking 15 - 20 years to get to 50% penetration.

My FTTH Experience

I recounted my experience moving into a new home in a FTTH community - Richardson, TX - here:

»Review of AT&T Yahoo by BuriedCaesar

While it happened in late 2004, AFAIK none of the communication structures between the various companies I had to deal with have changed. I called it "Fiber to the Curb" because that is how it was described to me at the time.

Despite the installation frustrations and other comments about the whole experience, I'm pleased to say that I have had rock-solid service and not a single interruption of internet service since then.

You are correct, I have a DSL connection with SBCYahoo, but what I was told by the players involved in my experience was that the city installed fiber, and this story confirmed that. However, in my case, I'm paying for a DSL modem connection inside the house with separate wiring from my POTS service from the pole outside in alley, so I guess my original assertion in my review was correct - I only have "Fiber to the Curb" and not all the way into my "Home".

I'm still not sure I completely understand the whole setup myself since I got into the big middle of it all 18 months ago, but it works.

CTT fiber
I'm in (Crystal Falls) Leander TX. We have FTTH. Well I can see the CTT cement block with but no one is offering service for it. Very fustrating. I have Time Warner for cable and SBC but no one is using the FTTH what a waste.

Data Correct?

Some of the cities in Ohio that are listed do not even have FTTH or even FTTN. Especially Sherwood, OH which is a village and Fostoria and Tiffin as well.

Seems that they're data is a little bit off.

Re: Data Correct?

It is the TIA, so I'd assume fiber to one guy in some basement probably counts as "served" so they can justify deregulation with largely inflated progress....

FTTH likewise is a bunch of providers and hardware vendors selling gear, with a vested interest in pleasing stockholders.

As someone notes above, it's really a very, very small part of the country that has fiber...sad considering even our densest cities still have DSL gaps....

Re: Data Correct?

See the thing is though that Sherwood Ohio is the phone company and the City. They don't even really believe in DSL let alone installing Fiber for anyone. Which is also a Co-Op provider. I had family that lived there and I did as well for a summer and the DSL they offer for $40 is lucky if it gets over 128k up and down. That's why I question it.

How Future Proof is Fiber? What im saying is how long till something else comes along?I know it can offer a Large Pipe but if a 10 to 20 year build-out to just 50% of the people will take that long who is to say something else don't come along and make even fiber look like DSL in that time.

Re: Data Correct?

Pretty damn future proof.

We're still coming up with ways to fit more and more in a single fiber strand... and fiber powers the worlds data/voice networks. It'll be around for a long long time to come. It will definitely outlast POTS.

Fiber is not what I thought it would be, Regret it.

I have 3.0mb symmetrical fiber to the home, actually the entire new home development does.

Since its a community build out, its included in our home owners association fee. So I cant get Verizon FIOS which is faster and better.

Also this small time CLEC has restrictions like crazy.

THIS SUCKS

successorfailure

@verizon.net

Year over year...

Is this a failure or success? You'd think they'd wait until a rounded figure would come up like 1,000 communities.. but no,
deadlines are deadlines. Oh well, I guess we'll wait until
we get until 1872 communities served nextime..
good luck on those deployments... cable companies are working hard to meet the limp tens of megabits they need to compete and are catching up... with docsis 2.0 technology might I add, which is 'in network already'
