We used to get the higher speed tiers first, now we haven't seen a bump in upstream since Xtreme/Turbo was unveiled. In other words, the upstream hasn't been bumped up since the Road Runner product was introduced. Pathetic.

1 edit | Re: North Carolina Well, bumping upload speeds would require them to upgrade their backhaul infrastructure which would mean investment in that infrastructure. You can bet some pointy-haired accountant has massaged numbers and concluded that:
1. Most users don't know what "upstream" is.
2. They would not make their investment back in one month or less. Preferably less.
3. #2 means that stockholders and Wall Street analysts would get a load in their dydies and we can't be having that.

| Re: North Carolina Part of the problem is that it seems that stockholders and Wall Street analysts seem to be hyperactive children and don't understand that in a properly-functioning capitalist system, reinvestment of profits in infrastructure upgrades, both private and civil, is how the economy maintains robust health.
Of course, perusing the economy today, the above might answer some questions.

Technically speaking, bumping upload speeds would require upgrades in the plant itself by either doing node splits or frequency adds. The backhaul is symmetrical and would have more than enough capacity already. Yep, I know their backhaul out of the Triad is a SONET OC-48 RING (2 x 2.4Gbps) which connects to Raleigh and Charlotte. They were testing a DWDM 10x10Gig link to Charlotte the last time I toured their RDC.

| Why do people keep complaining about upload speeds? Upload is for sending data. Are you running servers? Or bittorrent. Why do you need that extra bandwidth? And if you really do need it upgrade your account and they will be more than happy to supply it.
Also before you say, "well I am using my account for work so I transfer alot of files..." you can get the extra bandwidth for that.. UPGRADE YOUR ACCOUNT!

Also before you say, "well I am using my account for work so I transfer alot of files..." you can get the extra bandwidth for that.. UPGRADE YOUR ACCOUNT! The fastest they offer is 512Kbps. They don't offer ANYTHING on the residential side faster. Period. 512Kbps is pathetic in this day of pictures and videos.

| Re: North Carolina I just think every cable provider should offer a minimum of 1Mbps on their fastest residential tier in every area they serve. It can be done. 512k really is a joke, and even worse, 384k. Uploading just 40 7MP images from my digital camera to be developed online is a 1-2 hour upload process and nearly renders my computer useless for any other internet task during that time because it chokes the download so badly.
Forget about home movies/video.

I hardly agree that a 2 meg speed bump (down only) is a "dramatic" speed increase -but still welcome nonetheless.

@rr.com | Yeah, I don't call it dramatic either, but for many of NC's users that TW is feeding out of it's own grubby hands, most will probably think it's a dramatic upgrade.

| I was told by the Greensboro office that the "triad" rr was going from 5 to 10 for standard residential and turbo was going from 8 to 15. Wonder why Greensboro is getting more than other areas in NC? I'm glad I'm fed out of that plant. I haven't checked the speeds yet, however. | |

Download Speed: 5973 kbps (746.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 371 kbps (46.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
So it appears, at least in my area, that they only boosted the download speed...1 meg...not the doubling that the GSO office told you.

| Upload rediculous....... To download with 10 Mbps, you need about 3% of that bandwidth for packet requests on the return channel. In other words, downloading with 10 Mbps means there is an upstream of 300 to 400 kbps.
512 BARELY can cover that, let alone doing some uploading and downloading at the same time, because it is just not gonna happen, you'll get half the speed in downloads if you take too much upload away fro packet requests etc.

| Re: Upload rediculous....... Well I am in NYC and I have Extreme (20/1), Premium doesn't exist anymore, the one below Extreme is Turbo (15/768), standard is 10/512.
A cable tech told me during a visit the higher plans are going to be disconnected due to congestion, although he wasn't 100% sure.
I guess they might be refusing the higher tiers on congested nodes, actually, all mentions of Turbo disappeared from the TWC NYC website (Extreme was never mentioned). Damn, TWC gave speed boosts and now had to cancel higher tiers b/c of overloaded nodes. I guess all DOCSIS 3 will do is enable 15/768 Turbo again lol.

| wow they should at least offer 1mbit nowadays A top upload speed of just 512k? What kind of a joke is that? All cable systems I know of are capable of at least 2Mbit/sec upload, so quit being so stingy on the upload side of the deal here! Cable is capable of so much more, yet those wanting upload will be forced to switch to DSL if they keep doing that. | |

| Varies by Market It really does vary by market....
For reference, down here in the Texas region you're looking at the following residential offerings.
Lite 768x128 Standard 7x512 Turbo 10x1.0
Commercial speeds can go as high as 15x2.
Premium was also renamed Turbo to avoid confusion with the "premium" web services that can be purchased on their portal (www.rr.com).

Standard 7000/512 Kbps
Turbo 15/2 Mbps
Turbo Plus 20/2 Mbps

They REALLY need to work on upload speeds, since FiOS is offering 20/5 Mbps tiers in this area.

| Re: Upload. errr, you obviously are one of those grannies still browsing JPEG flicks and text pages on the 'net. Wake up, people now have digital cameras, camcorders, mp3 collections, webcams....... You don't have to pirate stuff (p2p) or run a supposedly illegal server to use lots of upstream. Every try uploading your photo collection in an e-mail, or send a DVD's worth of home video footage? With current TW connections, this can take HOURS. And getting biz doesn't entitle you to a different physical network. You still're affected by node congestion and the crap latency that goes with it during peak hours. Only diff. is static IP's, web servers, and a better SLA, possibly. And why should I need a carrier class circuit to upload photos to grandma? | |
