Upgrading Mediacom Online Max tier at no additional cost...
12:26PM Tuesday May 13 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: business · bandwidth · Mediacom
I told you last week that Mediacom employees were saying that the company's new 20Mbps tier would be available by the end of June, and the company today made it official via press release. Mediacom is bumping the speed of their Mediacom Online Max tier from 15Mbps/1Mbps to 20Mbps/2Mbps at no additional cost. The tier currently costs customers $60/month if bundled with TV service, or $75/month without. On a conference call with investors and analysts last week, Mediacom stated the upgrade would be available to 98% of their customers by June's end.

75$$

I wonder if companies are charging that rate because they can.
The cost of doing business passed on the the consumer like it or not.

That and some companies like to cover their costs and turn a profit. What do you propose Mediacom charge?

Re: 75$$

Nope i just think companies like to gouge subscribers for much as they can while they can. Since we never ever really have true competition, we will keep paying higher rates for slower services than most modern countries.

Re: 75$$

Costs are relative. I personally like what I have in comparison to a lot of modern countries. If I want 20/2 service, I think $60/mth is a fairly good price.

I am not really sure I see your point. They are charging that rate today, and now they will be upgrading their customers for no additional charge. Seems to me like they are doing a good thing here. For what its worth, I pay almost that much for 7Mbps by 512k here in NYC and I would love to be upgraded for free!

I agree but in the mean time I'll take powerboost It works great with smaller files!

It seems to be pretty fair. I wish I could get it. I pay $60 a month for Alltel EV-DO rev 0. I am lucky to get 1Mbps some of the time. It would cost me $1200 a month to equal that speed. When I had Cox Cable 8Mbps last year, before I moved, it was $40 a month for 8Mbps. It would cost me $80 a month with Cox, and it would still be 4Mbps slower, and the upload would not equal 2Mbps. I looked at there website and they offer cheaper slower tiers, and they are pretty fair too.

20/2 - $75 ($60 with TV)
8/512 - $60 ($45 with TV, if you have phone too you get 10/1)
3/256 - $40 ($25 with TV)

First of all I am a Mediacom employee. Regardless of that I think these are decent prices.

Re: 75$$

See the reply in the 20/2 thread in the Mediacom forum. The 3/256 service will be $30 going forward. Current customers retain their $25 rate.

Oh you know it. companies don't think they should pay any of their own costs anymore. since video is where the really lucrative profits are, thats why theres a "$15 no TV penalty fee"

Re: 75$$

That's what I am thinking. It forces you to bundle for a cheaper rate. In the long run once you add everything you may want to your bundle like premium channels the cost just goes up.

Upgrade

I'm on Charters 10/1 but it is currently the fastest they offer in my area. I wonder if I will qualify for the free upgrade?

I pay that much for 1.5

I pay 70 bucks for a 1.5/512 DSL. Granted I've corn on 3 sides, but I pay through the pooper. On the plus side, being a small co-op I can always get a hold of the local tech if there is an issue and given that my pipe is almost always saturated (xboxs, half dozen pcs, netflix, hulu, over a dozen HD podcasts, etc...) I've never heard a peep of the cable companies you're using too much Bandwidth garbage.

20Mbps just gets you to the invisible cap sooner it seems these days.

Re: I pay that much for 1.5

far as i know Mediacom is taking the same stand as Verizon
there are no caps that i know of and no throttling

and i would be willing to pay 100/m for 20/2 if i had to to keep it that way

Speed packages good, utilization questionable

I do applaud those speeds that Mediacom makes available, especially considering Mediacom's market.

However, my concern is with utilization. Mediacom, like many other cable companies, runs into frequent utilization issues that often take a considerable time (months-year) to resolve. Mediacom is still using Docsis 1.1, and therefore, it doesn't take many users to saturate their local network. Those speeds are great if you can get them and maintain them with a reasonable amount of time. But according to many of the users here in the past months, some don't even get Mediacom's current 15/1 "max" speeds due to over utilization. Making 20/2 a standard upgrade won't resolve the current issues unless Mediacom continues to expand and upgrade their network.

You and me both. Hey network techs, please answer this question. Other than pushing out a new config file to the modems, is anything being else being done TO THE NETWORK?

Are we doubling the size of the cups without changing the size of the punchbowl?

Re: VIP Speed Increase?

i think the point of this is to make the Max tier look like a better deal over VIP
right now if i had VIP 10/1 isnt far off from 15/1
but i would upgrade to 20/2 if i was on VIP

good move

it definately is meant to migrate users to the higher costing package.

i am skeptical that the Mc network here in iowa can handle a large user base if too many were to migrate.

i have been a 15/1 user since it came out. (the very night it was released in fact) and have had nothing but great service.

when i moved across town my service was flakey and i placed a call and within a few days i was back up to running at 15/1. since then i may have to reboot my modem once a month or so but i rarely have issues.

if they can maintain that for the 20/2 package i will be quite pleased.

I simply do not want to see an area become saturated with 20/2 customers and then have mediacom not do anything about it.
which is exactly what i fear is going to happen.

here in Iowa mediacom has had to deal with alot, and i mean ALOT of bad network hardware left over from @home, who never fixed anything.
so i applaud them for their hardwork in getting things better.
their TV service still suffers and continues to suffer from extremely poor line signals so hopefully they will get that fixed soon.

i for one think they should take the money invested in the costs to ATT for such high speeds and put that into more HD channels and better quality of their TV service.
but alas, i dont make those choices.
