Pics From Network Neutrality Protest
Canadian geeks gather to make their voices heard....
by Karl Bode Tuesday 27-May-2008 tags: business · world · net-neutrality · TekSavvy DSL
Users in our Teksavvy forum have posted photos from today's network neutrality protest in Ottawa (see entire discussion thread). According to our users, there was upwards of 300 people in attendance -- including a significant media turnout. That's not too bad for a protest involving a technical issue the vast majority of average citizens remain utterly clueless about. Still, anonymous posters from the Bell Canada domain took their shot (classy!) at the turnout. Says a more sympathetic attendee:

I just got back. Yeah, with a quick and dirty headcount I came up to a ballpark of just over 300 people. It's a little disappointing, but there was some spirit in the crowd and the host / speakers were very good. . . Perhaps this is really just a step in building awareness. But I felt the signs didn't make it very clear to passersbys what exactly was going on, or what the issues were, hopefully the media can fill that gap; if they bother to cover the story, that is.

Surely this pic wouldn't confuse your average Canadian passing by, would it?

Thanks!

Media coverage has been better than I ever expected, so by that measure this has been a resounding success.

Canadian media is so useless. They probably thought thousands would show up..So next time they won't even bother reporting it.
Blogs are where the news is at. Now if only we could get some education in to the regular, ass kissing, virus infected users. So that our rights and freedoms can be restored.

Don't get me wrong....

But how exactly does this fall under Net Neutrality? This is about Bell shaping the last mile network that these NSPs are using, correct? While this is a completely different problem that exhibits anti-competitive behavior on the part of Bell, I can't see how this falls under Net Neutrality.

Kiss of Death

The federal New Democrats will introduce a private member's bill on Wednesday that would entrench the principle of "net neutrality" and enact rules to keep the internet free from interference by service providers, an NDP MP told a rally Tuesday in Ottawa. The New Democratic Party's Charlie Angus told the cheering crowd that the private member's bill would protect Canadian consumers from having their internet speeds "throttled" by service providers.
Having the NDP introduce a bill in parliament is the best way to guarantee it goes nowhere. Bell is probably happy about this turn of events.

How's that? Since it's a minority government, it's probably the best time for the NDP to table a bill.

Best time? Worst time? When was the last time an NDP submitted bill actually went anywhere?

Its because they're a miniority, the only way that it will go somewhere is with some serious ammending, which would take the bite out it.

At least they want to try to do something, unlike the Conservatives who seem to want to allow the large carriers to treat their tariffed service wholesale customers the same as they treat retail customers: badly (or simply ignore them completely). That's not a stance for Net Neutrality, it's a stance for putting their head in the sand and pretending nothing is happening so they don't need to do anything about it.

Awesome

I was there during my lunch, it was great, met a lot of awesome people. There was way more people than I expected for a problem most people are too computer illiterate to realise they are affected. Although that kid's silly face seemed to light up when someone mentionned net neutrality affects facebook and youtube too. It was really cool to literally *be* at a protest with the people who own and run the ISP I just joined.

Media presence was awesome too, I saw a photograph from every media outlet in the region!

I stop by on my lunch break with a couple of co-workers. The turnout was ok, however the signs were to "geeky". My coworkers needed a good explanation of what this was all about. Any of the general public would probably have been confused as to what was going on if they were to casually walk by. Lets hope the media does a better job getting the message out.

Not bad for a weekday afternoon! This is just a start about educating those who don't know what this is all about. Thanks everyone!

Go Canada!!!

It's really fun to see every representative from the independent ISPs take action against Bell's (and possibly Telus, SaskTel, MTS, etc.) policy to traffic shape everything. The indie ISPs are not impressed!!!!

Re: Haha

For a country of 30m people? Yes it will, we generally don't have large protests, or turnouts in Canada(other people make them so). It doesn't necessarily take huge numbers of people to get things done, or make an impact on public policy. An example, getting several TV stations passed by the CRTC on to cable/satellite; it took all of 250 people knowing what they were doing. To get CTV NewsNet's licensing changed to allow different broadcast segments in the 30/60 min block segments took around 150.

You want to know what the real issue is? General Canadian apathy and not understanding the issues at hand. Now let's not forget Canada is a large place. For some of us Ottawa is a 4-6hr drive at the best of times. At the worst, it's a cross-country trip, we don't have population density; word of mouth and MP letter writing/direct action via the government body is the most effective means of change up here.

Blaming everyone else for apathy doesn't go a long way toward proving your point. It's like a Libertarian rally where only two dozen people show up -- and that proves their point about how they're saving everyone from themselves.

Re: Haha

and how many protests have you attended on parliament hill?

300 is an average turn out

I see people every day protesting there. This protest was well organized, clear and to the point.

Unless you regularly travel to Canada and deal with people on issues, or understand the scope of protests in Canada your point is without merit.

Apathy is a general consensus in Canadian politics and the protest arena; This is something most people outside of Canada don't get. Unless you understand that and your ideology, and goals are willing to accept and overcome that; you will fail. 300 people showing up for a protest on a first-time issue in Canada, again is a good turnout.

Now

NOW LETS ORGANIZE a COPYRIGHT BILL RALLY, that is more about the whole issue rather then just net neutrality
if we keep having protests
and keep having 300-500 people there each day.

Since most of the people in the photo were employees of the ISPs, maybe there is basis for a gender bias in hiring lawsuit?

Re: ?

It's not the ISPs fault that few women are entering technical fields.

If the majority of job applicants are male, then the majority of hires are going to be male too. Sitting down in compsci classes at school makes it obvious that it's still a male-dominated field; the interest is apparently just not there for women, for whatever reason.
