Carrier prepared for 5x jump, actually saw 3x jump...
(old news - 08:50AM Friday Sep 19 2008)
tags: business · bandwidth
MocoNews (via Silicon Alley Insider) points to comments made by AT&T suggesting that iPhone bandwidth use is considerably less than what the company expected and prepared for. According to AT&T CTO John Donovan, the carrier expected a 5x jump over the first gen iPhone in the amount of data consumed, but found the actual consumption to be closer to 3x. Of course that could be due to unreliable connectivity, a lack of upgraded HSDPA markets, the fact the unit can't be tethered, or because many users are switching off 3G functionality to conserve battery life.

People are doing the same stuff...

...just a bit faster over 3G.

Re: People are doing the same stuff...

So having faster speeds doesn't mean "just hitting the cap faster?" That's astounding.

Nobody is using it. That's why geniuses at AT&T Wireless. Of course, the people on TMobile use the heck out of the iPhone.

I have a first gen iPhone on T-mobile and the new iPhone 3G on AT&T and I can tell you that in my neck of the woods, AT&T rocks over T-mobile.

What are you going to do with it?

You can't download music without paying for it, so I am sure people just copy music to it.
It really sucks for browsing the internet so I can see that most people do not even use it.

The bandwidth is probably all from email and myspace.

For me, I use it at work when I want to access something like IGN or Gamestop that gets blocked by the firewall. I have had my iPhone for about 5 weeks and have received 440MB and sent 22.4 MB as of right now.

As for browsing, I find it leap and bounds above the Blackberry and Sony Ericsson phones we also have.

Re: What are you going to do with it?

Nice screen, but way too limited, no Flash/Shockwave support, and Javascript support is inferior to several other phones/browsers.

There are phones/browsers that are a lot better than iPhone in my opinion.

The 3g speeds on AT&T suck.

Comparable to Sprint EVDO Rev 0 in OKC. Rev A blows AT&T's EVDO out of the water, at least in Oklahoma.

Off Topic: I was looking at AT&T's 3g coverage map yesterday. What the hell is the problem? How is it that Sprint & Verizon have EVDO rev.a coverage in extremely rural areas and up and down every major highway...but AT&T can't even cover the major highways with 3g? I don't get it.

Re: The 3g speeds on AT&T suck.

AT&T has 3G coverage in my very rural area (Ukiah area in Mendocino County, NW California), and has recently turned up quite a bit of rural 3G here in NorCal.

Problem in many areas have been the spectrum allocations in many markets, and issues with capacity on voice+data.

3G requires at least 5MHz of spectrum (paired no less).
EVDO requires 1.25MHz of spectrum (paired)

3G runs both voice and data across 3G
EVDO runs data only.

Pushing both voice+data over a 5MHz chunk in many areas doesn't cut it (metro), and in many areas, coming up with an extra large chunk of spectrum requires taking it away from GSM. This is why T-Mobile has to deploy its 3G in 1700/2100 MHz space.

Eg. Los Angeles market has a decent amount of spectrum to begin with. 22.5MHz paired - spread over 850/1900MHz.
Currently AT&T runs:
850MHz GSM (cell A block = 12.5MHz paired)
1900MHz GSM (pcs D block = 5MHz paired)
1900MHz UMTS/WCDMA (pcs B3 block = 5MHz paired)

In theory, all 3G devices will hit that 5MHz of 3G spectrum for voice and data. With spectrum capacity being maxed, calls 'should' handoff to GSM (happens ~50% in my case). If this was set for data only, it would work much better right now.

As a lot of ATTM subs will tell you -- all you have to do is go to, say, the ATTM-related boards on Howardforums -- is that since the iPhone 3g launch ATTM's 3g network has shown all the signs of being horribly oversubscribed in a lot of places.

So it's a good thing they anticipated a 5x load increase and are seeing only 3x. If there had been a 5x load increase the 3g network would be essentially unusable in a lot of places.

@verizon.net

They are only using 1 of the 4 GSM bands so coverage sucks.
It is not just I-Phone, my Samsung drops calls all the time and you cannot turn off 3G, in Australia I never had 1 dropped call anywhere on 3G although the I-Phone still has problems there.

ATT has *EVDO* in OK? LOL Think again.

Why is it so hard for some people to understand how much is involved in rolling out new technology on such a massive scale(?)

not for long. Soon to be swallowed up by VZW. =(
I think Alltel is great. When I had Sprint here in OKC, I would often put my phone in forced roam just so I could use Alltel's network. In the boonies out here in OKC, coverage was PERFECT, everywhere on Alltel.

I Have To Say......

If the iPhone 3G is eating less bandwidth than expected, what does that say about AT&T's 3G network when it likes to go down a lot. LOL

I use it regularly

Well I've got a 3g iPhone and I use the 3g all the time. I watch anime's while at work, surf the net, post on forums, etc. I also Download music through dTunes(like iTunes but free music downloads..anywhere)It takes about 10 seconds to download a song with 3g btw- to people saying the speeds are bad. I use the 3g whenever possible.

Have you used it for any voice calls ?
If you have, how many have dropped ?

Many (including myself) disable 3G due to 3g-->GSM dropped call handoffs.

3G working fine here..

Web pages load up almost as fast as wifi on my iPhone. No complaints here. I've downloaded over 60 megs in 2 days.

Then why 3G speed SUCKS SO BAD NOW?

SSeriously: since hordes of iTards been dumped on the network AT&T 3g SUCKS LIKE NOTHING ELSE!

The other day I was measuring it with DSLR's mobile tool 2x at every hour for a 4-hour period and I never got anything higher than 300kbit/sec - as always PATHETIC PIECE OF CRAP SERVICE from AT&T.

iTards? What a cute little insult. Are you jealous that you don't have one? By the way, if you're going to call a group of people retarded, you might want to check your post for grammar errors. It has more of a punch when you don't look like an idiot yourself.

He's from Europe (not a first language English speaker), hence the less than ideal grammar. I could care less about that part though. IME dealing with this guy in the past he clearly has a few issues.

WiFi

I guess AT&T, just like DSLR forgets that people have WiFi in may spots. My EDGE iPhone was slower to load content on EDGE but when I am home I use WiFi, when at work I use WiFi, when I'm in many business locations I will use WiFi. On the 3G iPhone I only use 3G when I'm in locations that I don't have WiFi access (less than 10% of my usage). In fact, the whole reason for me to upgrade my phone was to have more storage (8GB -> 16GB phone).

Less Bandwidth because many I-Phones don't work!

Ther are 3 reasons- AT&T 3G bad coverage
Many I-Phones have 3G turned off

throw this one out there..

make an app that takes the bandwidth from the 3g network and transfer it to the wifi, and use the iphone as a wireless hotspot. that would make usage higher! of course, you may need to plug it in... and I'm not even sure if you can use both wireless features at the same time and interact with each other, but what a cool feature that would be..
