Billing issues or just procrastination?
(old news - 12:07PM Monday Oct 20 2008)
tags: legal · business · wireless
Thanks to tough state-level laws, the occasional mean Attorney General and class action suits, wireless carriers have been forced to change their ETF policies, and now usually reduce the early termination penalty by a certain amount each month you're under contract. They're also now offering 30 day trials, and have stopped the particularly annoying practice of extending your contract every time you make even tiny plan changes (you can thank Minnesota's Attorney General for that one). But RCR Wireless News notes that Sprint has been slacking on changing their ETF structure, and blames billing systems:
Roni Singleton, spokeswoman for the carrier, said the new ETF pricing has not been implemented yet because the carrier needed to make sure all customers were on the same billing platform and there were other system enhancements to complete. Sprint Nextel spent several months moving its CDMA customers to the billing platform used by its iDEN customers, a move that was thought to have been completed earlier this year.
Others simply think the struggling carrier is intentionally dragging their feet because it doesn't want to lose any more customers during what's been a very difficult time for the company.

Reverse?

If the situation was reverse (going from pro-rated to fixed ETF) you bet they would have had 100 consultants on it and gotten all the issues sorted out in a week.

Re: Reverse?

Amen to that joako.

Sprint really irked me several times due to extending our contract on a line for replacing a phone with a previously purchased phone. How the hell is that even legal?

Scenario: I have phone A on line A. My wife has phone B on line B. I get a (new) phone C. Phone B was old and needed a new battery, so I gave Phone A to my wife. They extended lines A & B for another 2 years. Line A, yes, for the phone discount. Line B? What the hell.

Re: Reverse?

It's "legal" because you signed your life away in the contract.

They extended my contract without telling me.

I can't sue. I CAN pay for arbitration, which IMO is worthless.

Oh well contract is up in September and I am getting tired of a $160/mo bill and I still can't get the free text messaging they promised me.

Re: Reverse?

Why don't you just change your plan? yeah you'd sign a new contract, but it would void your old one, and you can get better service.

Because the reception isn´t too great either. Somehow they've also managed to have the same dead zones in Sprint (CDMA) and Nextel (iDEN) services.

Sprint California early termination fees are illegal,

Californians fed up with being charged for ending their cell phone service prematurely won a major victory in a Bay Area court decision that concluded such fees violate state law.

It is my understanding that Sprint will be prorating their ETF as of Nov.

Re: Reverse?

Just to clarify for some folks: The prorated etf's are supposed to start sometime between Nov. 2nd and Nov. 9th when the new release of Ensemble is launched, and it only applies to NEW contracts that start or renew on or after the scheduled launch date, so if your contract started or renewed on 11/1 or sooner, you will pay $200 ETF with NO proration. Just wanted to make sure people were aware, thanks.

Its possible

I had an issue where I was given an incorrect contract completion date by a Sprint rep. I cancelled based on that false info and got hit with a $200 ($235 after taxes) ETF. I opened a complaint with them and told them I'd be happy to pay a pro-rated ETF, but I wasn't going to pay the full one based on faulty information they provided me, since I had acted in good faith. They agreed to pro-rate it without any problem. So clearly they CAN do it.

Sprint Sucks

My wife and I have had so many issues with this carrier I just want out! Yeah they are dragging there feet because they know they have to many clients pissed as hell at them. My bill should be consistent we don't access the internet(through them) but that one deserves a write up of it's on since my phone has WI-FI (boy they tried to jerk me on that one. My bill is NEVER correct or even close to consistent and we never go over our minutes, never dial 411, and have unlimited texting. I will never understand that but last year I had to call them almost every month, this year they robbed me of a few hundred dollars since my wife was paying the bill's and didn't catch the issues and they say they won't correct anything more than 2 months old. Trust me I don't send text messages to Guatemala hell I don't even know where it is, but they say I must have. Don't you have to put in a country code or something, when I text it comes right out of my contacts or I reply to someone I know usually only in this state even? That took several calls to get that off.

Well I have my eye on a phone and when it rolls out I will sign with another carrier take the discount on the phone and give it to sprint (if I really have to). Until then I am just hoping I can find a loophole or an attorney willing to take up the fight with me.

Billing issue? BS!

I have been having voicemail issues for nearly a year now. They have been trying..and unable to..push some update to my phone to fix the issue. I finally said screw it i'll use my upgrade credit for a new phone...well they said i would have it in a week but when i checked my order status it's been backordered with no chance of getting it for two weeks. I'm canceling the upgrade and the 2 yr signup..i think i'll wait for my other two lines contracts to expire and move away..3 more business lines gone from sprint.

Re: Billing issue? BS!

psst.. hey guys.. here's a clue. VZ is no better. Nephew has been in the hole with those morons for months. Over text msg's. Last issue, he broke his cool slider phone, went back to some older phone that doesn't get vcast or whatever it is about 3 months ago. They still have been charging him for the internet access stuff and he asked them to suspend it till he got a new phone (early next year to stay in contract). They refused. Told him he had to pay a ETF, get out of his current contract, sign back up to get a different plan. So he's been paying for services he can't use. Heck, he could get a new phone if he done that anyway. This was at a official verizon retail store. Not some mall booth or anything. As far as I'm concerned they are ALL, that's ALL of the wireless carriers are no better then the other guy. Just gotta pick which battles to fight.

Had Sprint for Years

I have had sprint for years they have had there ups and downs service has always worked in the areas I've lived in. Did have a problem with one of are phones last week...couldnt get it to make a call in roaming...seemed strange took them about 4 days to figure out it had to be the new phone we just got...they sent us a new one in the mail and it seems to work fine now.
The new instinct is a nice piece of hardware.
I will say thou they still need some improvement on customer service...seems you have to goto tier 2 or higher to really get anything done right.

Software pushes

Yeah thanks hescomin that reminds me I stupidly used *2 to call them once not to long ago and I hear this recorded message please wait while we upgrade your phone... First my phone is a pocket P.C. since it is a pocket P.C. I want to know what the heck your changing and why, at least Microsoft offers that option. Well to late I figured, and I let it finish, as soon as it was done I lost my signal and now I have trouble getting service anywhere. My wifes phone just seems to upgrade at random, this is the third phone she has had and every once in a while all the ring tones she has set up are randomly jumbled all around. I think someone at Sprint is messing with us yes I think it has to be a conspiracy. Yes 3 more Sprint customers on their way out here too.

Thanks for the heads up tc1 I was looking at Alltel but considering the merger with VZ I just might have to rethink that in fact I will probably just suck it up pay full price for my phone although that touch Pro is gonna cost me one way or the other, and go month to month from now on.
