Verizon Yahoo! Members Get More Ads, Fewer Features
As part of delivering 'the best possible online experience...'

Verizon/Yahoo! webmail and portal users write in to note they're receiving e-mails saying they'll soon be seeing advertisements in their webmail as well as the elimination of some features. The new ads, according to the alert, "allow us to deliver new and innovative services and helps us keep prices competitive." "As we remain committed to providing users with the best possible online experience," the e-mail continues, "the new advertisements will be carefully integrated, with the goal of being useful to you." Thanks?

But the service itself is actually becoming less useful, with some of the premium services associated with Verizon/Yahoo! webmail being either changed or eliminated altogether. The Verizon website says that the companies are eliminating the Verizon LAUNCHcast Plus streaming music radio service, the "Online Protection all in one security suite," and downgrading your free Flickr Pro account to a standard Flickr account. But don't feel bad, the e-mail to customers informs them they're losing features in order to....gain features?

We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause, but believe they will allow us to bring you exciting new features that will continue to enhance your Verizon Yahoo! online experience. For FAQs, please visit verizon.net/yahoochanges, which we will keep updated as more information becomes available.

Verizon makes more money from advertising, while you pay the same price and get fewer perks. While maybe they'll soup up the offering down the line, it doesn't sound like much of an enhancement so far. Earlier this year Verizon began using DNS Redirection advertising, and over the summer cut back their newsgroup offerings. There's some additional discussion among annoyed customers in our Verizon forum.

LOL

I wonder if there is a corporate form letter out there for how to tell your customers your going to start bombarding them with more advertisements. It all sounds so familiar to me.

In case anybody missed it - YAHOO is dying

Yahoo is dying. Why do you think they are selling their soul to Google? And btw that Yahoo-Google deal is dying the death of a thousand cuts as the Justice Dept has the deal scaling back drastically to allow the deal to go forward.

Verizon needs to do a deal with someone other than Yahoo. They have hitched their portal and webmail to a horse on its last legs.

Yahoo upset its chairs when they didnt take the offer from MS. AOL didnt seem to work out. Yahoo just doesnt get, its more about a political agenda, then business.

Making Comcast look better

Its doesnt surprise me, but why would Verizon motivate people to Comcast this way ? There is no way i am going to pay for a service, and get even more ads...

Re: Making Comcast look better

Comcast looking better? I dunthinkso. Maybe if you compared Comcast to the Nazis, Comcast would look good. Comcast to Enron, people would probably say they're on the same level. Comcast has a worst rap than the IRS. Lowest of the low.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast#Re···sfaction

In 2004 and 2007, the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey found that Comcast had the worst customer satisfaction rating of any company or government agency in the country, including the Internal Revenue Service.[36]

Dude, if that makes you leave Verizon (FIOS at least) for comcast, your priorities are seriously screwed up.

I had to go from Fios to comcast when I moved (2 miles, 4 months ago) and I hate it every day.

The day FIOS comes down my street will be the day I sign up for it

Re: Making Comcast look better

Article is about Verizon/Yahoo DSL I think - no mention of FiOS.

Comcast basically did the same thing recently with their webmail. Ads of course count toward the usage cap!

AFAIK it is only if you get yor mail via Yahoo webmail. No ads for Outlook or VZ ads for Gmail.

Re: Making Comcast look better

Probally because they have not figured out how to force them into Outlook yet!!!

I will never ever buy anything from a add.
or from a commercial that runs 20 times during the same damn show.

Who cares?

Nobody that I know with VZ service doesn't use those "perks". Barely anybody uses @verizon email and VZ is used solely as ISP. Days of AOL portals are over. It just sucks for people who used those services, but VZ DSL prices are relatively low, so it's not that bad.

Self absorbed much? Regardless of who you know in your immediate circle who uses email -which evidently must include the entire market since you presume to speak for it- the fact remains that services should be optional, not completely done away with.

Verizon really screwed up my Samba/Windows network by redirecting my failed DNS requests to advertisers. DNS requests should fail when they're wrong. That way, name resolution can continue to other methods.

That said, people ought to not depend on these tacky and tacked-on ISP services, ever. They're handcuffs to keep you from switching ISPs because then you'd have to change your email address (which is free elsewhere), change anti-virus (which is free elsewhere), get your music elsewhere (also free), and etc..

Just pretend they don't exist. The opposite of dependence is INDEPENDENCE!

Re: Who cares?

I hate that, trying to opt-out but my dns on VZ router like to "reset". Hated that.

Good point, limit reliance on ISP, I changed ISP many times, learned my lessons.

Agreed. I could care less. I use VZ DSL as a Dumb Pipe. Their Email is problematic. I use Gmail. Their DNS Sucks with its AD laden 404 screen. OpenDNS works better. Don't need their Portals. My own personal portal is tailored to me because it was written by me. The list goes on.
VZ DSL ? A cheap Dumb Pipe. That's all.

My 2 ¢ YMMV

AT&T

AT&T did the same thing, sounds like maybe that yahoo partnership terms have changed, and only are taking effect when the contract is getting reuped. Either pay yahoo extra cash to keep it, or revert to a diffrent level with adds, but still yahoo plus mailbox storage size.

Re: AT&T

Wait, when did AT&T do the same thing?? And why was I never informed of it by AT&T? I still have the pro flickr account from them:

"You have a Pro account, at no cost as long as you keep your AT&T Yahoo! service."

Re: AT&T

there was a thread on her while back that the webmail interface both the "classic" and the new "beta" ones would soon be getting ads on them just like the free yahoo ones do. also the eliminated the pick 2 premium option, where u could select the yahoo plus games and such and not pay extra for it.

Wish I could switch!

I live in an apartment and used to have TWC and Roadrunner. Last spring the apartment complex threw out TWC and went with Directv provided by Consolidated Systems. Since Directv does not provide broadband service, Consolidated Systems was going to provide cable broadband service. I had never heard of Consolidated Systems and what I found out about them did not give me good feeling that I would receive high quality service (especially since they were charging more than TWC for Roadrunner service). I had a Verizon landline, so instead I got Verizon DSL. Yesterday, I received the notorious email about the changes being made to Verizon Yahoo. I don't see anything I will be gaining by these changes. I will be paying premium dollars for DSL service and getting mediocre service.

Verizon Email Now worse than ever

Verizon has made using their email account difficult by allowing the advertisements to be placed all over the place. Isn't it all spam anyway?

How about this - No one buy ANY product from an ad on the Verizon Email!! This way, the companies that pay for this will realize how dumb it really is!

Screw the adds, it's the AntiVirus software, stupid!

Who cares about the ads??? You can use your POP email client and never see and ad.

The more important issue is that I will now have to spend $150/year on antivirus software for my 5 Windoze PCs. This is a MAJOR downgrade. AFAIK, every other ISP gives you AV software for free. I know I can get that buggy POS AVG for free, but who needs that (go out and read their forums if you think you can live with Free AVG 8.0)?

When my year is up I will be doing a serious price/performance review and I urge all Verizon customers to do the same. Also, if yer not too GD lazy, send them a FEEDBACK email letting them know how you feel.
