$24.99 for 'unlimited' data, $34.99 for unlimited data/text
(old news - 04:22PM Friday Nov 21 2008)
tags: prices · business · wireless
T-Mobile has unveiled new data pricing for smart phone customers, bringing everyone in line with their new data plans recently unveiled for the HTC G1. Previously, many customers paid $20 for unlimited data provided they also had a voice plan. Now, customers who want "unlimited" 3G data will have to pay $24.99 a month, though that includes 400 text messages. For $34.99, users can get unlimited text/picture messaging. Of course "unlimited" doesn't really mean unlimited. If you recall, T-Mobile had originally capped G1 users at 1GB, a total that's now 10GB according to the T-Mobile terms of service:
...if your total usage exceeds 10GB (amount is subject to change; please periodically check T-Mobile.com for updates) during a billing cycle, we may reduce your data speed for the remainder of that billing cycle. We may also suspend, terminate, or restrict your data session, Plan, or service if you use your Data Plan in a manner that interferes with other customers’ service, our ability to allocate network capacity among customers, or that otherwise may degrade service quality for other customers.
So far it appears that T-Mobile isn't booting anybody for hitting that cap -- but is simply reserving the right to do so via fine print.

Funny

Now all T-Mobile needs is a 3G footprint to go with that data plan.

etter than Sprint/VZ/ATT

Good: 10 GB vs. 5 GB...
Bad: Lousy 3G coverage vs. decent to awesome 3G coverage...

Add to this that T-Mobile's data plans are on the cheap side (though Sprint's are better) and...well...they need more coverage.

I'm a little confused...

I've searched some forums but I'm too lazy to cut through all of the posts.

I currently pay $19.99 for my BlackBerry add-on plan. I know I can obviously keep this plan for now, but maybe I will have to pay more if they ever come out with a 3G BlackBerry.

Any word on whether $19.99 plans are still available without the text messages? I already have a family message bundle.

Re: Get More!

I believe the Blackberry 19.99 Unlimited Internet Plan price stays for those who had it active before the new prices took effect on Nov. 16. To add it now it will be at the new price ($24.99).

At least I can tether my BB for use as a modem - even though it is s-l-o-w - when I need to without any additional charge.

Now if they would just get some interesting phones...besides the G1

Re: Get More!

I'm waiting for the Javelin/Curve 8900, I guess. It has all the features I'd like, but still no 3G. So if they do come out with this 8900, how can they expect people to pay $25 for the data without 3G, especially if they already have a family text bundle?

Not sure why the 400 text messages can't be taken off and why they are not retaining the $19.99 plan, at least through customer service. Has anyone confirmed that this plan is truly gone?

Yes you can get unlimited media net and messaging for $35 with AT&T but that's not for smart phones, those are $50 for the same services.

Re: Get More!

Yes, what I was saying is for regular phone, on AT&T, you would pay $35/month for unlimited media net and messaging. For Smart Phones, it is $50/month.

Blackberry Bold

Is a 3G Blackberry subject to the same caps?

T-Zones?

I wonder where this leaves the $5.99 T-Zones plan... I assume if it's gone it will remain grandfathered?

wow. double the cap of other providers. yes, coverage is very sparse, but t-mobile doesn't disappoint on that point.

Weird

I was paying $20 for BB Data plan + $5 for SMS, and now it's combined, so it doesn't look like big price increase or none at all, just forced bundle.
I abandoned data plan because TMO coverage SUCKS, if not wifi my bb would be useless. Even when I used it as a modem, all I could do is load gmail and that's it, and don't get me on packet loss.

Re: Weird

well i have the $20 bis plan on a family plan with unlimited test/pictures/video which is $20 for the all the lines. the other line doesnt use bis. I wonder if this would help give bis and text for the whole plan and save me money.

This is one reason I won't consider the G1...

Ironically enough, the T-Mobile call center is located about 10 miles from my house, but 3g coverage is terrible.

3g sucks

I love my G1, but Tmobile 3G sucks, I just selected Use 2G/EVDO since that is decent.

Someone's Got To Pay

for T-Mobile's new 3G network and spectrum.

I love the speeds of the new 3G network here. Way faster than AT&T and cheaper!

The cost is still the same

I don't see the big difference here, I mean Total Internet cost $19.99 and 400 SMS $4.99 so this is just combined.

Look at sidekick rates, Last I read about the increase, Sidekick users got the shaft. They were going to be raised from 20 for unlimited txt and data to 35. Without voice from 29.99 to 54.99. I closed my account and I am with sprint on simply everything plan.
