Company invites media to launch event
(old news - 11:45AM Monday Dec 08 2008)
tags: business · bandwidth · world
Surprising nobody, UK ISP Virgin Media is asking journalists to attend a media event intended to herald the launch of their new 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 tier on December 15. The EuroDOCSIS 3.0/DOCSIS 3.0 service comes with a very sexy and sleek modem, images of which were leaked to the Internet months ago.

Slightly less sexy and sleek will be the service's rumored 10GB cap, which will be in effect from between 4pm and 9pm -- and if exceeded -- results in the connection being throttled down to 7.5Mbps. If you're curious, this page has more information on the UK broadband carrier's current throttling system. This new, "XXL" 50Mbps tier should go for somewhere around £52 ($100) a month, with upstream speeds of just 1.5Mbps.

As part of an effort to drum up media interest in DOCSIS 3.0's arrival in the UK, Virgin has recently been complaining that the as-yet-unlaunched tier breaks traditional broadband speed tests.

Throttled to 7.5Mbps?

Doesn't sound much like the end of the world.

Re: Throttled to 7.5Mbps?

Long as they are clear, upfront, and don't deceive people. It's fine. You are always too hasty to rush to judgment. Now, if they clearly make people aware of this cap, then it's by all fine. They are not charging overage, but simply throttling. If however they tell people it's 50mbit, but fail to clearly disclose the cap. then I say there will be an issue. One can imagine why they don't want the media present, though. There's no real fanfare needed for such a limited system. Yay?

You must have read that wrong. They are asking for media coverage, not discouraging it.

Virgin Media looks set to launch its 50Mb broadband on December 15 after inviting journalists to a mystery event. Now, journalists have been told to 'hold the date' on December 15 – where the company will almost certainly show off the fastest broadband in the UK.

Yep. I did read wrong. Personally, this system isn't worthy of fan fare. What a crock as I'm sure it'll be advertised at 50mbit, and the "capped speed" hidden into a million words of fine print. The rest of my post is accurate. However, I did misread on the media part. Not major mistake but retracted to say the least on my part.

Set a timer in your P2P client, and at night floor the connection away. Much better than 10GB a month on TWC.

Even throttled, it's still faster than my connection normally is.

sleak and sexy?

pff... who cares about what a modem looks, most people don't have them out in the open to start with... and if you put it out just to look at, then odd... most of the ones ive seen are on the flood, behind a desk, in wireing closets...

All I care is that it is square and not rounded. I am sick and tired of network gear that has too look like a damn space ship. Do they not realize that you just might want to stack your gear instead of wasting space spreading it across a desk?

Maybe they don't want you to stack stuff on top of it due to heat issues?

Yup, and add super bright, distracting LED lights that blink enough to induce an epileptic seizure. Linksys for a bit was making their products stackable but have since stopped.

Buy commercial grade 1U/2U/4U networking equipment then. Remember to get a home equity loan to pay for it.

Re: 1.5 up

What kind of overhead is there just to sustain 50mbps down? Must be approaching the limits of the needed upstream to achieve those speeds.

It makes sense if the practical download speed is 7.5 Mb/sec due to throttling.

Seriously.. they should at least give you 5Mbps up..

a little more generous.. please-- I said please

I think they should tweak that idea a little bit...
Make the cap throttle to 10mbit and 50gb data, then make it gradually slow down as you ease towards 50gb (in the early 40gb range..), then it resets after 9pm. It would affect much fewer customers and they won't get annoyed with you then. However, US carriers-- listen up.. don't try that crap here, especially if Verizon has FTTP service.. becuase they don't throttle.

There is a posting that Verizon has a 500GB soft cap:
At least for now, Verizon FiOS doesn’t do that - but with talking to tech support, they noted 500GB “soft cap” that would raise some eyebrows.

From what the guy told me, if I use over 500GB/mo and they get reports of slowdowns in my area they will send me a letter to cut back. If I don;t cut back within the next month, they reserve the right to take “action.” Whatever that means.

It means because the way the contract was drawn up they cannot drop your bandwidth. Instead they will drop your contract and not charge you the normal end service fee. Both Verizon and AT&T are doing this.

What does that have to do with anything? A lot of people get speeds like that.

Back on topic. I can understand prime time throttling more than flat monthly caps. In a lot of neighborhoods, Cable and DSL (especially cable) have proven that their infrastructure isn't able to handle everyone online in the evening hours.

Flat monthly caps and paying overages = money grab
Nightly caps during prime time with reasonable throttling = poor infrastructure but reasonable compromise

Re: me # 1

I agree that throttling during prime time is a much better solution than a monthly cap, as long as they are open about it. A monthly cap does not really address the congestion issue as an individual can stay within the cap and do all his downloading during prime time, causing massive congestion. On the other hand, a person can download double the cap during off hours without causing any congestion.

Be careful when you play "ha ha mine is bigger" around here. Someone always has a better connection than you do.

(And yes, for the record, someone out there has even better bandwidth than this -- just look at the archives for zip codes beginning with "9".)

Not a big deal

Not really a big deal, they just try to shock and impress with the kinda sweet modem(which will be what they gush & adamantly talk about at the media event), and the DOCSIS 3.0 and 50Mbps speeds.

But ultimately, you will be capped for a good 30-40% of your service. And your upload will be laughable.

But outside of all of those humurous & consistent issues, you can download at 50Mbps after 9pm to 4pm(most of which will be probably spent sleeping).

Read the fine print, they'll find more ways than one to screw you or minimize your consumer rights.

confusion?

Does that month you can only use 10GB between those times for the entire month or is it 10GB per day between those times? And does the throttling continue outside those times if you exceed the limit during 4-7 or whatever?

A Couple Things

I recently moved to the UK from the US, and I have Virgin Media. I can speak to a couple things mentioned in the comments.

First, the caps between peak hours go away after the period is over. I was downloading some linux ISOs during peak hours and I went from 1 MB/sec to like 200kb/sec or so once I passed the threshold. After 9, my speeds went back up to normal.

Second, the quote in the article about the price being 52 GBP equal to 100 USD is crap. The exchange rate hasn't been 2:1 in months. The price is more like 75 USD now.
