'Clear' Officially Hits Portland January 6Though the company has been promoting the service for weeks ( old news - 06:37PM Monday Dec 15 2008) tags: prices · business · wireless · ClearwireTipped by funchords Users have been telling us for a few weeks that Clearwire has been marketing their new "Clear" mobile WiMax service in Portland, with the company's website listing service plans (see insert below) for a few weeks. The mobile version comes in four flavors, all of which offer 4Mbps/384kbps connectivity, but with different bandwidth caps ($30/month for 200MB, $40/month for 2GB and $50/month for unlimited). The home plans come in three flavors with no caps: 768kbps/128kbps for $20, 3Mbps/384bps for $30, and 6Mbps/512kbps for $50. The company says they'll also be offering a $10 day pass for mobile users. You can save $10 per month for 6 months from the mobile tiers if you sign a long term contract, with additional savings if you bundle mobile and home. All tiers (both mobile and home) have a $35 activation fee. The Clear website also makes reference to a home voice product they'll be selling for $25 per month eventually. While Portland has been live for a while, Clearwire and Intel only just today announced the official Portland launching party will be held on January 6. Clearwire and Intel announced today that they will host a press conference on January 6, 2009, in Portland, Ore., introducing the city to Clear(TM) and the "Let's be Clear" campaign promoting the region's first 4G mobile WiMAX network for next-generation communications services. Clear's pricing varies somewhat from XOHM pricing. The two products will ultimately become one as part of Sprint and Clearwire's joint venture, which aims to reach 140 million people within thirty months. The completion of the network will be greatly aided by a $3.2 billion cash infusion from Comcast ($1.05 billion), Intel ($1 billion), Time Warner Cable ($550 million), Google ($500 million), and Bright House Networks ($100 million.) join:2008-07-17 00000 | portland (the burbs) is fios territory. hmm. so i can spend $3 more a month and get 10/2 fios?
hope they're not relying on the home market.

| Re: portland (the burbs) is fios territory. They are relying on the home market because fios isnt everywhere... clear will be able to go (in the end) to places where DSL and cable dont even reach let alone Fios. between clear, LTE and the faster satellite connections i would be surprised if a fixed line doesnt start getting washed away just like Pots are with the Cell phones. | |

| Started Clear tonight I just started Clear service tonight in a western suburb of Portland. The signal has been alternating between 3 and 4 out of 5 bars on the modem. I signed up for the 3Mbps service and so far, it has been going up on the speed tests but is still not what it is supposed to be. Fios is not currently available in my neighborhood although it is around the corner. Comcast is doubling their speed this month to 12Mbps although I am not sure if it has already happened.
The Clear modem signal actually goes down if I put it by the window (as recommended) and goes up in the middle of the room. It will be interesting to see how reliable the service is as time goes on.
