FCC Commissioner Deborah Tate Resigns
Will step down in January as FCC turnover begins...
by Karl Bode 09:33AM Wednesday Dec 31 2008 Tipped by Phylop See Profile
FCC Commissioner Deborah Tate, who recently gained attention from many only after criticizing World of Warcraft, says she'll be stepping down (pdf) in early January after serving three years on the Commission. Tate's claim to fame is as a child and family advocate, though she was also a staunch supporter of Digital Rights Management. Tate was also largely a party-line deregulator, voting with the Conservative majority on most issues, including allowing the merger of AT&T and BellSouth with only marginal conditions.

FCC statements on Tate's leaving the FCC

Tate's statement on leaving the FCC:

Statements by the other 3 FCC Commissioners on Tate's departure:
»hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/a···61A1.pdf
»hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/a···41A1.pdf
»hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/a···54A1.pdf

No statement yet from FCC Chairman Martin on Tate's leaving at end of her term.

News item on WHY she is leaving:
She was renominated by Bush for a full five-year term in June 20 of 2007; however the Senate did not act on the confirmation and that's why she's leaving.
So this isn't so much a resignation as it is that her term is over the 1st day Congress meets in January. She had to leave. It isn't voluntary.

Instead of resigning, I would have liked to see Terry Tate - Office Linebacker take her down.

I think Obama is setting the tone that, yes, there is room for the best people regardless of party.

There is, however, no room for partisans. I think Tate is seen as a partisan.

Interesting. So would it be safe to say that even this go round the Senate / Congress is looking for a change? The FCC has had it's issues for quite sometime with regards to being in-tuned with the modern world. Hopefully, this go reound they ge tit right.

Good Riddance

Anyone pushing DRM obviously knows nothing about piracy, intellectual property, and computers. Good riddance.

You are a fool if you think ANY administration will be different. The next Chair will be the same thing. Perhaps not as vocal, but the same nonetheless.

Anyone Who

Re: Anyone Who

It's about time to see a lot more of these incompetent FCC commissioners resign, or be forced to by the new administration. Tate is just another of the technically unqualified politically appointed commissioners. Kevin Martin is another.

It's time to get the FCC back to what it does best, engineering. And let the politics to the politicians.

Maybe now we can get the FCC culture back to what it was prior to the politicization of the agency, and see the technically competent employees again do their jobs to represent the interests of all of the people.

It's time to sweep the top of the FCC clean of non-technical people and get it back to what it was and is chartered to be. A technical regulator and watchdog.
