TX users demand more service
(old news - 02:03PM Sunday Mar 11 2007)
tags: Fiber · consumers
Tipped by dustman81 See Profile
Last month, OEN laid out fiber service to an area of Houston which covers approximately five thousand residents in the northwest portion of the city. Service seems to be going well and the company plans to quadruple the number of potential customers in their service area by the end of this year. Of course, OEN isn’t the only company spreading fiber throughout Houston; AT&T has service in the area and other companies are jumping on the bandwagon as well. The Houston Chronicle takes a look at the ups and downs of fiber in the area, offering pretty much the same old look at the arguments for fiber over cable, with the take that consumer demand is pushing fiber in the area.

FISION?

I have faith in CO_Chris See Profile and his FISION.

(NOT!)

Houston fiber is a joke. You have vaporware FISION, and u-verse. u-verse being something that gives you 240 kbps better upstream, 0 kbps better downstream, HDTV-lite(no way in hell with that bandwidth you're getting a 15-18 mbps stream like with an antenna) and you have to pay for it to be installed.

If someone could do it right, I'd say cool, but until I see it happen, and until I see someone say "hey, I have 10/10 or 15/1 or 30/10 and it works well", well, who cares?

Everyone demands MORE service

We all demand more service...some of us are just more passive about it.

From the story:

Comcast, meanwhile, which owns the Houston system still running under Time Warner, is continuing with its coaxial cable infrastructure and focusing on improving programming, customer service and convenience, spokesman Ray Pursor said. Comcast is spending $200 million to upgrade the Houston system, including faster Internet connections and more television channels.

That's at least a hopeful sign. WHEN, however, is the big question.

Why TX?

Why is it when ever I hear about a new fiber rollout or new iteration of service, it is almost always in TX? What make this state so special?

Re: Why TX?

Texas houses a lot of company headquarters.
Dallas in particular.

But don't think for a second all this fiber talk is actually going anywhere, because it's not.

Re: Why TX?

Hmmmm... Texas isnt the only state that houses a lot of company head quarters but you don't see them bitching about Fiber. Ohio has many headquarters and we don't bitch about anyone giving us fiber.

Wonder if we did if TWC would install it.

A pipe dream

Fantasy.

The only fiber Houston will see in any large production is in the cereal we eat.

not a dream for some

Commercial fiber is ok in Houston - you can get either a shared hook (200$/mo for 2mbit sustained), or a regular 100mbit ether into the fiber loop (1000$/mo). However, residential fiber is quite another story...

On that note, I'd imagine most any ISP will be happy to provide a fiber connection -- as long as YOU'RE willing to pay for laying it, installing it, and using it.
