AOL Tries Again, Hires Ex-Google Exec
Hoping this time they get things right...
AOL continues an interesting trip that took them from one of the largest and most powerful ISPs on the Internet, to a fractured and financially-troubled company with dreams of becoming an advertising giant. Of course most of their problems were caused by their inability to adapt to (or really in some cases even recognize) the broadband market -- something that was at least in part caused by former executive Lisa Hook, who went on to do amazing things with VoIP carrier SunRocket as well. This week finds AOL hiring former Google executive Tim Armstrong, who the company hopes will finally solve their identity crisis.

Armstrong goes from pinnacle to the dregs of the internet

I guess Armstrong likes challenges, or they are paying him WAY MORE than he is getting at Google(and that says something). To go from the top to the bottom of the Internet pecking order is quite a fall.

challenges...thats the understatement of the week.
They won't grow again, however they can still retain dial-up cavemen that refuse to dump AOL for a better product from this millenium!

You do realize that some people can't get broadband.

Oh Here we go again

Just let AOL die in peace. That company has been so miss-managed by people with no idea or foresight for years.

They should look to merge with a company making punch cards, analog televisions, 8 track cassettes or something.

The AOL brand is dead

Anyone who has ever used AOL and is now on broadband, will not use AOL for anything else. This means AOL is going to have to rebrand itself if it wants to be a major player. But this leaves it in the same dilemna the competition has seen, Google. Its time to sell your remaining assets and close shop.

Amazing as of Nov AOL was still the 5th largest ISP with 7.5 million subscribers. Of course that's only about 1/4 they had at their highest. And they've been losing 600,000 a quarter for the last 2 quarters. So were still talking another 2-3 years before AOL drops below Charter which is 7th on that list

die aohell die

We don't need or want aohell, they only exist to confuse fob immigrants and other computer illiterate people so their money can be more easily taken from them!

I REALLY HATE IT when I have to explain over the phone how to get aohell working for someone that barely speaks english or has no idea what the my computer icon is lol. Seriously just stick a fork in that mess and liquidate it already. How many aohell floppy disks are filling up most of our landfills somewhere?

Well, back in "those days," the floppies could be reused. It's the gazillion useless CDs that one should be worried about.

Re: WINAMP

Yahoo and AOL should just be the ones who merge. Sure they are both brain dead companies, but between the 2 there may be a few good salvageable services.

Re: WINAMP

i'm sure between the two companies they could manage to get AOL IM and Yahoo! IM to work together the same as Yahoo! and MSN Live do. They'd have it made there. Also Yahoo! could get back in the Internet business as they once were and maybe AOL would become the ISP for ATT or even VZ.

I'm surprised none of the telco's signed with AOL for any services like ATT, VZ, Qwest, Embarq, etc. Having an outside ISP handle everything such as CSR, billing, etc would take a lot off the last mile provider.
