AT&T: 231,000 U-Verse Customers
Installing 12,000 new customers per week...

AT&T has released their fourth quarter earnings, which show the telco earned $3.1 billion last quarter, a total that doesn't yet include BellSouth. After recent comments by the CEO that sales were down due to a slowing economy and customers not paying their bills, the company's earnings largely met investor estimates. According to the telco, they had 231,000 U-Verse customers at the end of last quarter, and are now installing 12,000 new U-Verse customers per week.

The company now lays claim to 70.1 million wireless subscribers and 14.2 million broadband customers. AT&T says they added 396,000 new broadband customers in the fourth quarter (that total includes resold satellite broadband service, DSL service, and U-Verse).

OUTSTANDING!!!

They've finally managed to get enough vrads installed close enough to employees homes to crack the 200k customer mark.

Way to go AT&T!!!

I see your predictions of AT&T's doom are coming true.
Which actually is one of the main reasons why I rant on them so much.

I mean..it's not like they don't actually have the money to build a truly state of the art broadband fiber network.

Instead, they'll pass it along to their shareholders in the form of yet another dividend while sticking their heads completely in the sand as to what is unfolding around them.

AOL was also making huge amounts of money before their demise as well.

It is actually unreal how mismanaged this company is.
After all this time they've managed to cough up just a little over 200k customers for this monstrosity of a service. But yet..they continue on.

Unreal is all I can say..especially seeing the writing is clearly on the wall..and they can afford to rectify it still ..but don't.

Goodbye AT&T.

Stay on this path and you will be out of business in the not too distant future.

Yeah, because there's no way our upstanding politicians in Washington (who are bought by AT&T lobbyists) would give them some kind of rescue/bailout package in that ever-so-likely event.

Clearly you are delusional.

Yeah, that whole wireless business thing will never work for them.

It's about servicing the sweet spot of the market. The sweet spot is not the bleeding edge. That's not where money is made.

VDSL has more throughput than even DOCSIS 3, so they are not even using the potential of what their system is capable of. Unless their equipment is substandard they should be able to offer much higher speeds.

They are giving the same speeds to people who are utilizing FTTH to access UVERSE. 6-1, or 10-1, is not ramping up, it's a shadow of what VDSL can do on the download, and upload capability is symmetrical. So they are continuing on artificially crippling upload speeds.

Sweet spot = crippled network ?

Re: OUTSTANDING!!!

How is the network crippled? Do Verizon open up their FIOS offerings to "un-cripple" their network? Do cablecos open up their DOCSIS offerings to "un-cripple" their network? No. To even insinuate that AT&T is crippling their network instead of selling a standard set of services to their customer base (like almost every other provider does) is silly.

Because the reality of it is, we can see what a network should be by looking at the world.
You can try and make people believe the opposite, but we can see it, there it is, and there are on site witnesses

You realize each TV takes a massive chunk of that VDSL line, Uverse was never intended to be an internet product, only TV, internet was an afterthought. I do hope for the day where ATT offers "Dry Uverse Internet", with 20 or 30mbit down and 2-5 up. I wonder if the VRAD modems can work on dry lines, and get extra speed by using Voice freq. This is also verging into the topic of line bonding.

Not entirely accurate. There is T1 over cable, it's called VYYO. And T3, OC1-3 and higher connections are too expensive for residential folks to pay for. So who cares?

And Im still waiting for one, even though im in a single family house in a downtown area with some multistory office building around me, I drive 10 block in any direction, I hit VRADs. Its piecemeal shit. But ATT has started to open multiple ATT stores and remodel Cingular stores to heavily heavily push Uverse, to whom, I have no clue, but the TVs are there. I wonder how all these stores get Uverse for the instore displays even though there is no Uverse around them?

Multiple bonded T1s/SDSL/HDSL lines or T3 grade/business grade fiber from Central Office?

And I'm talking about a technological fluke that had nothing inherit to do with the service.

Telco's have been running cabinets in the field for decades. Oooooooo 4 blew up! Everybody panic!

Re: Kablamo!

A fluke would be one, not 4. Quality control on an issue of safety isn't allowed to be 99% effective. It has to be 100%.

So i guess AT&T is overreacting replacing 17,000 units?

Unfortunately it often takes disaster to wake people up. Columbia had to explode before intense inspection protocols had to be instated on the heat shielding, and before people dropped the 'meh - it'll be fine' attitude.

So by your standards -- how many VRADS need to explode before something should be done? Or would you wait for an injury or death? Maybe more than one, it might take a couple lawsuits to balance out the replacement of 17,000 batteries no?

And it has everything to do with the service. AT&T clearly cut corners on the battery supplier, shown by the fact they're now out of business. There's truth to the saying you get what you pay for.

Re: Kablamo!

4 out of literally thousands of remote solutions. What is a fluke to you? Less than 0.0001%? They're being replaced as a precaution. Cable TV installers have killed more people than exploding VRAD's.

Why did ATT release such an unprofitable product (VOIP)? aren't they eating away their POTS division? or is this a case of left hand not talking to right hand?

It's 2008!

Ok, it's 2008, but for AT&T.. welcome to 1996. DSL close enough to deliver what Verizon (ahem, I mean Bell Atlantic/GTE) was doing back close to a decade ago--minus the video and on a smaller footprint/scale. Add in the coalescing of the evil empire / death star analogy.. and you've go the NEW back to the future AT&T.

Then again, I'm sure those who have been out in the cold with dial-up for so long will welcome the boost in speeds. For the rest who have been spoiled with cablemodems, & satellite tv, and cheap voip, bah humbug. BTW, no news on CHURN rates?
Those who throw up their hands and say.. cancel the account.. hope they don't get transfered to the former AOL customer service employees.. or we're bound to hear this on youtube.

Look At The Numbers

According to today's earnings announcement: "pre-holiday weekly install rate of approximately 12,000, ramping to 40,000 by the end of 2008."

"Targeting more than 1 million in service by the end of 2008."

12,000 NEW CUSTOMERS PER WEEK AND SOME OF YOU ARE SAYING THIS ISN'T GOING WELL???

Anyone suggesting that things are bad--or doomed--at AT&T clearly has no clue what they're talking about. They're just trying to save face since their dire predictions on the fate of U-verse haven't shown any truth whatsoever.

AT&T has clearly shown they can scale this service and that it works. Next challenge is multiple HD streams, which AT&T has said will be coming later this year.

uverse bah, wireless yah!

I could care less about uverse numbers -- here's the one number that stands out for me as an investor:

"16.3 percent increase in total wireless revenues with wireless data revenues up a robust 57.5 percent"

16% increase in wireless revenues with only 4% new subscribers? Huge, huge number.

AT&T Still SUCKS when it comes to WWW

I'm defianly NOT a DSL fan at all! Oh wow, 6mb down 1mb up, wow that is so blazing fast .... NOT. Especially for the price, it's defiantly NOT worth it. I mean for the price of ATT U-Verse and being limited by 1 HD channel at a time and crappy unreliable www isn't worth it.

Listen here I can stream as many HD channel I want and have speeds for my www up to 20 megs down and 2megs up and not have to worry about the service. Not to mention pay the same price as your STUPID ATT U-Verse!

Who ever has ATT U-Verse, I'm sorry, you'll either go back to Verizon FIOS or back to your cable company very very soon! Enjoy getting stroked!
