AT&T Adds 30 HD Channels to U-Verse
Bringing IPTV HD channel count to 75...
by Karl Bode Monday 27-Oct-2008 tags: dsl · business · AT&T U-Verse
AT&T dropped us a line to note that those U-Verse HD changes that have been in the works, including the addition of the rather unexiting "premium" tier we already discussed, became official today. There's a number of changes listed in a press release issued today, most notably the addition of 30 new HD channels at no extra cost. That brings U-Vere's total to more than 75, all but three of which are available to U--Verse IPTV subscribers for an additional $10 per month on top of existing packages. That should take the sting off of the additional of a premium HD tier, which AT&T confirms will see additional channels in the future.

Many are not new...

A lot of the listed channels are already offered in HD. I'm guessing it's just a complete list...not a list of newly added HD channels.

Clear this up please...

Does U-Verser charge extra for an HD ready/capable converter? or what?

So basically, what makes up the HD fee? Converter box + HD box upgrade + $10 HD-tier 1 and optional $5 HD-tier 2?

.. or how does it work?

Re: Clear this up please...

It's $10 for all boxes in your house to get HD. U-Verse only comes with one DVR that can record up to 4 streams 2HD/2SD or 4SD.

The extra $5 is for additional stations from my understanding.

the hd is included in every box (stb and dvr) they they use. there is no cost for the boxes. The cost would be $10 or more for the hd. at least that is how it is for me in the cleveland market.

No, all boxes are HD boxes. No extra digital outlet fees as well like Comcast. With Comcast, if you want an extra box, you pay $5-7 for each box + digital outlet fee for each $5-7.

missing Comcast SportsNet Chicago HD +

Where is Comcast SportsNet Chicago HD + and the big ten HD over flows?

and why add 30 hd channels when you can only view / recored 2 at a time per home?

att can't have part time HD over flow channels?

Comacast and direct tv have CSN + HD.

RCN has 2 big ten HD over flows, DISH and Direct TV have more. Direct tv has all big ten hd feeds.

Direct TV even has a unused csn alt 2.

ROFLMAO @ "and why add 30 hd channels when you can only view / recored 2 at a time per home?" milk would be shooting out of my noise if i where drinking milk right as i read that. btw, are you a paid poster for the cable companies?

by the logic of that phrase, why bother ever having more channels that the number of tuners? so basically, 'my dvr can only allow me to watch/record 4 (or 2) channels at a time, why on earth would i ever need 100 channels?'

Im saying they should be doing more work on getting more per home then on more hd. HD is taking off and the max of 2 per home is becoming a big limit. I have a Direct tv HD and a HD DVR so 2 will be to little for me and I just have 2 hd tvs.
People out there may 2-3+ tv's and If you have 2 HD tvs then can drv any hd while watching 2 shows at the same time.

Just wait for ATT to offer Direct Tv deals next year.

Somehow I'm guessing the AT&T lawyer-critters that secure programming agreements are not the same as the technical group working on compression improvements. No reason both can't be happening at the same time. AT&T has said they plan on 3HD in 1Q09.

Uverse now offers "Whole Home DVR" Which basically makes the hard drive stream-able.

You forgot regional sports (1...999)

As for regular programming, at least we got the Fox channels (FX, Speed). We got NBC a while back (Sci Fi, Bravo, Universal), but we still need ABC (Family, Disney, etc) and CBS (Spike). There should be a lot more coming before year end if the rumors posted on AT&T's forums are to be beleived. So far they've been pretty on track.

It's nice to get more of the HD premiums too.

U-Verse in Jackson, MS

It was announced U-Verse would be coming to Jackson, MS about a year ago. I wish it would happen pretty soon, but I haven't even seen anything that looks like a deployment here.
Comcast has a stranglehold on this market. I live in a heavily pine tree populated area with about 15-20 pines in my south line of sight... which puts satellite out of the question. I want some competition in our area.

New HD channels

I wonder if watching these new HD channels counts against my bandwidth cap?
