AT&T Announces U-Verse Enhancements
Including increase of 'High Speed Internet Max' tier to 12Mbps.
by Karl Bode Tuesday 16-Jun-2009 tags: dsl · prices · coverage · business · bandwidth · telco · consumers
AT&T this morning let us know that the company is unveiling a suite of enhancements to their VDSL-based U-Verse service. According to a company press release, the company will continue the expansion of their total home DVR service, which we've been covering since last year but has been seeing phased refinements. The release also notes that along side the whole-home DVR upgrade, AT&T will be refining the navigational GUI, as well as adding a "new interface to schedule and manage their DVR recordings from any web-connected PC." Probably of most interesting note to our users, AT&T says they'll be giving High Speed Internet Max customers a free 20% boost in downstream speed from 10Mbps to 12Mbps.

Should they be blessed by the At&t gods?

o0o..a whole 2mbps upgrade and nothing for upstream.

I'll stick to my 12/2 with Comcrap. lol

Re: Should they be blessed by the At&t gods?

I agree, thats a pretty lame upgrade. Notice how all of these announcements by the Death Star come on the heals of a PR nightmare week with the Iphone & AT&T.
They seem to be firmly in the spotlight. Announcements like this actually let you know how far behind they are!

upstream isn't everything
100/10 vs 20/20
90 percent of us would go for 100/10 and only 10 percent would see any use for 20/20

30/10 or 20/20? same

I believe asymmetrical is more useful to end user then symmetric which is more practical for business uses

would i prefer 100/10 vs 20/20 or 30/30 yes I would but would i prefer 100/10 over 50/50 or 40/40
a very confusing choice if you ask me

You can watch a HD feed and record 3 other HD feeds at the same time?

Because it memory serves (which granted it doesn't at times) U-Verse just rolled out the ability to support 2 HD feeds at one time.

With Comcast and enough TV/DVRs you can record/watch every HD channel they offer at once.

LOL as if ATT wouldn't do the same thing if they had the capacity (which they don't).

Simply ATT can't handle recording two HD channels while watching another live HD offering.

I guess who it's supposed to compete with depends upon location. Here in Raleigh, NC the only competition is Time Warner Cable. TWC's top "turbo" speed is 10Mbps down and 512Kbps up...so AT&T U-verse blows them away.

Who? TWC? I don't expect TWC to be in any rush. They've had the same old speed tiers for several years now, and I can't remember when TWC last bumped up the upload speeds. The tier just below "turbo" has been stuck on 384K for FOREVER. I know a lot of people that are dumping TWC for U-verse because of that.

I really, really wish I could dump TWC. It's ridiculous how long I've had the same speeds. With all the technology upgrades over the last several years... my god I hate the ISPs.

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is huge and is projected to have the highest growth percentage of any US metro area over the next 10 years. The problem is that (and I think you're alluding to this), they have no real incentive to upgrade because their competition is Road Runner at a paltry 7Mbps/384Kbps, or 10Mbps/512Kbps if you want the insanely expensive turbo tier.

I think U-Verse is available in parts of Charlotte, but to my knowledge, no where else in North Carolina.

U-verse is also available in Raleigh. It's been available here since December or January. I got mine installed in February. I got tired of waiting for TWC to bump up their speeds, and I get more TV channels for less money than I was getting with Dish Network. Overall I've been very pleased with U-verse so far.

It was rolled out to Charlotte first (I think around July/August), and then was announced to be available in Raleigh somewhere around December/January. It wasn't available in my neighborhood in Raleigh until February, and that's when I signed up for it.

Time Warner is the worst in terms of upgrading. At least AT&T makes some attempt to offer services consistently across its footprint. TWC doesn't even offer speeds consistently across the LA market. Speed upgrades seem to be a knee-jerk reaction to FIOS or U-Verse, instead of trying to be a market leader.

For me, what it comes down to is price factor.

As my TWC 1 year all the best is 'up', it'll be time to move over to AT&T to try Uverse on a similar initial price point, now that they have VoIP services.

They can enhance me some U-verse instead

I am all for progress, but it would be nice if they would get in gear and re-honor the line upgrades that got killed after the merger. I am still in a solid copper zone and even my neighbor, who happens to be an AT&T Line Tech, is frustrated by the lack of deployment.

No one, not even AT&T.

It was supposed to be here last fall. In fact, the VRADs were set up last spring (2008), and it's still not here. Some parts of the city have it, but my neighborhood doesn't.

Not worth anything...

If you don't have access to it to begin with. There were new VRAD's installed in my neighborhood a year and a half ago, if not longer and it still isn't available.

I tried & and will avoid,

I tried U verse thinking it would be great,
1.having my phone,all options,longdistance,dsl & cell phoe withone company,easier paying the bills,

2 I SHOULD HAVE KOWN something wasn't right when the installer had to try 4 right out of the box recievers befor he found one THAT WORKED then used 1/2 roll of white cord/cable to install run cable from (like a clock12 noon to 6pm position where computer was) then had to replace my wall jack, screwing up an 8 yrs old great phone, which AT&t would pay for repair nor was I able to get repaired, even after sending it off to a company that says they can repair ANY PHONE.

said I try it for a week, by the 3rd day I call an AT&T,(not a uverse tech out) to uninstall the crap, I'll stay with my Directv service for $100.00

perfectly happy with UVerse

in Jan this year, we went from ATT DSL (6/1), Dish SD (~140 SD channels), and Comcast Voice (1 line) to AT&T UVerse triple play; Max18 Internet, U450 TV, VoiP (1 line).

We used to pay ~$145/m for the 3 separate services, now we pay ~$128/m for more internet bandwidth and 3x the channels, with significant number in HD. Phone service seems to be about the same (but cheaper).

No sure what there is to complain about. There is no Fios here, and having had nasty CS and billing issues with Comcast in the past, it was a no brainer. Less $$ for more stuff.

On the internet service speeds, I'm not sure that those posting the big Speedtest numbers are really getting any better of a user experience on teh web, unless they are doing huge downloads all the time. Some of the "my speeds are higher" postings seem very similar to overclocking chest thumping ... sorta does not mean a whole lot in the real world.

well, that comes out to ~$42/m per service (although that's not how it really breaks out)

As I said we were paying ~$140 for all of them prior, so this is a better deal, just based on the simple math. If you add that there are 3x the channels and significant HD content, nearly 3x the down stream internet speed (6m vs 17.2m) .. and voice is basically the same, it does seem like a good deal to me.

I don't think Comcast is offering anything better (other than higher internet speeds) in my area - N. CAL for a better price.

It's better than nothing. In most of Chicago, the slowest tier comcast offers is 12/2. At&t needs to make 12/1 or 12/2 the basic tier if they want to compete with comcast. I was able to get 22/5 for $50 a month with comcast. Even with the cap, i really like it. I hope to see at&t make more improvements soon.

Re: Better than nothing, but not the same as the competitor.

I tried the Comcast 12/2 for a few months and the packet loss in their Chicago network is horrid at times. Their routing would also be completely off the wall at points. VPN to work would drop or be extremely laggy and its not like traffic has to go very far as we colo downtown Chicago and have nearly a dozen upstream providers.

With U-Verse or AT&T dsl it is almost like being on the lan. Working from home is not even possible most days with Comcast. Modem signal levels were fine, it was just like the node or internal network were getting overloaded at points.

At least you did give it a shot though! I gave it a shot and it worked out well! I don't have any ping issues or anything and get my advertised speed 24/7, usually more with powerboost. There are others that just hear "comcast" or "at&t" and won't give them any chance. I was willing to give uverse a shot. Did not want att dsl, mainly because i wanted a tv package. If they where an option, i would have chosen them. It's not though. (and where i am at, i get like 60 something hd channels. Granted, many of them i won't watch... Green tv HD? Hallmark HD? Ok then!) I do kinda like comcast's ondemand section. I am getting spoiled with that!

I get consistency with Uverse. Comcast powerboost gives them a excuse to deliver inconsistent speeds. at 2am it's blazin fast. At 5pm it's at least or less than advertised. I'm still getting more for my money with Uverse than Comcast ever gave me. And it's getting even better for us Uverse customers. While all the cable customers sit there and wait for their holy grail they call DOCSIS 3.0, then needing to upgrade their modems for it. And the cost for DOCSIS 3 speeds is outrageous.

Why can't they deliver FIBER speeds? Why fart around when there are gigs to hand out??? Oh yeah... it might compete with other AT&T products.

Fiber is great for the few who have Paxio or something similar -- but U-Verse and FiOS should upgrade their users!

If that's the symmetrical 100Mbps "Lightning" package you're subscribed to according to your speed tests it seems your a bit below the 100Mb plateau

[EDIT]
That 50/50 Performance service plan going for $74.50/mo looks like a sweet deal.
