AT&T Brings LTE to 9 More Markets
With Plans for 40 More in 2012 as LTE iPhone Looms
by Karl Bode 09:31AM Thursday Sep 06 2012
AT&T's slow-but-steady LTE deployment continues, with the company today announcing that they're bringing LTE service to nine new cities: Anchorage, Alaska; Bakersfield, California; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Jacksonville, Florida; Modesto, California; North Montgomery County, Maryland; Syracuse, New York; Omaha, Nebraska; and Northern New Jersey. In addition to the new markets, AT&T is circulating press releases claiming they'll have 40 more LTE markets online before the end of the year. Things get tricky for AT&T this month; the launch of an LTE iPhone will only highlight the LTE coverage gap between AT&T (60 markets covering 73 million potential users) and Verizon (371 markets covering 230 million potential users).

Verizon has 371 markets

try keeping up. If course that number should hit 400 within 2 weeks.

Re: Verizon has 371 markets

Keep in mind that AT&T are still rolling out 3G.

They're a joke of a company. Then again, they are Southwestern bell who has been rebranded AT&T. It would be like MetroPCS buying up and rebranding to Verizon.

But you also have to keep in mind that AT&T's 3G is significantly faster than Verizon's 3G. It is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Verizon still doesn't have LTE in our Los Angeles suburb, and their 3G is so overcrowded it's practically worthless. Meanwhile I've had very usable speeds of 5+ mbps on AT&T for over a year.

I'm not partial to either carrier (I have a Verizon iPad and an AT&T iPhone). I do know that there's no way I will move my phone service to Verizon now with these horrible Share Everything plans. If AT&T forces me onto their version of that plan I'll have to figure something else out.

Who cares when one can get Verizon's 4G. here's an example. The town 20 miles east of me Waverly, TN. The best at&t offers is EDGE. Not even 3G. Verizon has had 4G since April. Who are you going to go with? Even if all Verizon offered was 3G that's faster than EDGE. At&t just within the last month added 3G here in Camden. Verizon has had it here for almost 5 years now.

Here its the opposite.

This area of CA is one of the few areas in all of California that Verizon has no LTE.

Similarly, AT&T has 'faux G' (HSPA+) here and no LTE (no carrier has LTE here currently!)

I did notice that some sites for AT&T were having panels replaced.

If you speak for whole US, thats apples to oranges comparison. In some places its opposite and Att is first ahead of Verizon.

Just look at Dubuque, Iowa. Its a small town but IBM has delivery center there and there are few other important companies there like McGladrey. The county has population of over 60,000 people. Att has 3G there since March 2011, and recently they upgraded it to 3G+. Meanwhile Verizon still has there 3G only. And because I lived there, I know Att doesn't even have corporate stores there (while Verizon does). The only carrier that has 4G LTE there for now is US Cellular.

Didn't he just give a great example? And it was in an area that isn't in the middle of no where, like your example and where you hear most EDGE complaints coming from.

Big whoop....

Hopeless....

Considering that Verizon was launching nearly as many LTE markets as AT&T had in a single day, this is hardly impressive at all.

This is aside from the fact that current "Unlimited" data customers, which AT&T loathe, can't do FaceTime over Cellular.

I'm still debating if I want to go ahead and upgrade my iPhone when the new one comes out, or wait for my contract to expire with At&t and move to Verizon because of this.

If you go with Verizon you'll have to go with their Share Everything plans. So depending on your situation you may save you may not.

I know. That is what is making me want to hold back. I still have the unlimited plan and never use face time anyways.

Good thing I have Verizon

They have had LTE in the areas I live and travel. They have had LTE in Springfield MA for over a year, and they just turned on LTE at my Grandma's house in Maine earlier this year. They also have it in my hometown of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Maine has pretty good LTE coverage (about 2-3 bars at my Grandma's house in Biddeford). The Maine Mall in South Portland has spotty LTE coverage (and only because of a repeater in the Verizon Store there). According to some employees of the store, South Portland is not quite online yet with LTE because it has to do with issues with the leases on the two towers in South Portland.

It will be another few years before AT&T has LTE in more rural areas lime Iowa and Maine. AT&T seems to be slower with network upgrades than Verizon.

I wish I still lived in Iowa; Everything there from rent and groceries to Cable TV is much cheaper in Iowa (especially with an overbuilder in town).

and still no LTE in Philadelphia or suburbs. What a joke. My choice now is to switch to T-Mobile, who's 3G HSPA+ is 2-3x as fast as AT&T's, or spend a crapload of money for Verizon capped.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I might actually switch to T-Mobile until we get some kind of LTE buildout around here.

Verizon's had it for several months now in Philadelphia & Suburbs.

Edit : Non-capped LTE, or at least a reasonable cap. 2GB is bullshit, and I won't play those games.

Not sure where you get 2 GB from. Under Verizon's new plans your cap can be anywhere from 1 GB to 20 GB. Even under old pricing the caps was 2 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB. 2GB is just what most people CHOOSE to get.

Anchorage

I think that's actually the first market that AT&T has launched LTE in before Verizon!

Now you start to see why GCI and Alaska Communications (fka ACS) merged their wireless operations on the backend; Verizon will be following AT&T into AK as fast as they can with LTE.

Re: Anchorage

I was very surprised to find out a co-worker's Galaxy S3 had turned to LTE last week. I didn't know AT&T would spend money on Alaska any mOre than it had to. I'm with GCI and will be for a while.

From what I understand, ACS has the LTE spectrum, but GCI has the resources to launch it quickly. That's why they have joined forces. Hopefully the Alaska Wireless Network will get LTE soon. They'll have to.

Punished ...

I guess Rochester gets punished for being an LTE launch market with Verizon? Buffalo got ATT LTE not too long ago, now Syracuse is announced ... at this rate I'll bet Albany and Utica get LTE before Rochester.

Ok ... whining over.

Time to hang up on AT&T

My time with AT&T on the wireless side is coming to a close. Honestly I think it's time to go prepaid or with TMobile. I'm not going to pay a premium for AT&T's slow service anymore. I would consider Sprint, but honestly their coverage is a JOKE in this area.

EDIT: I bought the HTC Vivid back in December thinking that LTE would surely be here by the end of 2012. Nope! Go ahead and squat on the spectrum AT&T.... I'll squat on the money I'm saving!

Got that right. You get north of Kawkawlin and you're back into the 90's and 2G. Terrible network up there.

Don't really care.

When they(Verizon and At&t) have unlimited LTE for the price of their 3GB plan wake me up.
