AT&T focuses on U-Verse VoIP and mystery BYOB service

tags: business · AT&T · AT&T U-Verse · AT&T Southeast · AT&T Midwest
In the summer of 2008 we noted that AT&T was no longer taking new orders for their Callvantage VoIP service. The company of course wanted to begin pushing their U-Verse Voice VoIP product a little harder, but employees also hinted to us that AT&T was cooking up a new bring your own broadband (BYOB) VoIP offering as well. That BYOB service still hasn't arrived, but AT&T this week gave a concrete date for the CallVantange shutdown, which previously was vaguely scheduled for sometime this year. According to an e-mail being sent to customers this week, CallVantage will officially be shuttered on Novermber 17. Hopefully, the seven of you still using AT&T's CallVantage service find this information useful.

Callvantage with u-verse

Ported one over from callvantage that already had u-verse was one of the quickest install's to date.

Grace period of about a month...

Customers had previously gotten letters strongly recommending that they secure new service by Sept 30, with tentative shutdown of Oct 20. I guess it's good that they're giving another 1 month extension, but I would think (and hope!) that most subscribers would have at least initiated port-outs by now...

Look at the forums

It seems like there are still many users that have not ported out yet. Look at the posts on the forums. It seems like many people are trying to find new VOIP still.

Yeah I just noticed that. I find it odd that anybody's still attached to the dying CallVantage tendril after all the warnings...

You have to give kudos to AT&T though

least they have been giving notice. I can think of a few others that didn't. Sunrocket comes to mind.

While I have no love for the "new" AT&T - I have to agree. They've been handling the shutdown a lot better than many others I can think about.

This is proof that the 'big guys' didn't understand VOIP

When a company like AT&T can't make a go at VOIP, it's amazing that anyone else can. Yet, Vonage and a few others keep hanging on....

Re: This is proof that the 'big guys' didn't understand VOIP

The question is not whether they can make a go at VoIP, it's whether they choose to offer a 'standalone' VoIP product. When CallVantage was rolled out, it was offered by the pre-SBC AT&T, a company that did not have incumbent POTS lines anywhere. (They did ultimately begin to offer 'AT&T local' service through CLECs, but as a 'long distance' company, that was they best they could do until they were acquired by SBC.) Before the SBC acquisition, a standalone VoIP product made sense for AT&T. After the acquisition, not so much... Doesn't make a lot of sense to compete against yourself.

When I tested their service when they first started up I knew that would not be around long. Surprised they made it this long...

The margins from VOIP are a lot less than POTS or cell - it's that simple. While a small company can be perfectly happy with 20-30% margins - AT&T would need 200-300% to be able to keep running it's giant machine without losing money.

Vonage too mind you has never turned a profit. They go from loan to loan to loan. One day they'll have to face the music...

But OT aside- if you haven't ported your number out yet - now is the time. If you don't do it in the next couple of weeks you are likely to have your number out of service for some period of time. VOIP porting usually takes 2-3 weeks and can sometimes take even longer - start early.

Not always. Every time I have ported numbers (many) it has only taken a couple of days. I have heard of delays and in those cases it was the "losing" provider that was either taking their time or holding it. In this case, AT&T wants you to move, so I would imagine that they would push it. Unless they are swamped and that would add time.

If you port to a wireless carrier, it may take a couple of days. If you port to another VOIP provider - it will take 2-3 weeks - perhaps more.

It hasn't for me. I have had to move mine and others numbers many times and each time it was a matter of days. Not weeks. And as I have stated the only time I have heard that it did take longer is when the "losing" provider took their time or held the number to be difficult. In the early days of porting it took a while because they systems for it were not as advanced as they are now. Porting a common everyday process these days. Once upon a time, going from a telco to anything could be a nightmare, having worked for telcos, but that has even gotten a lot better.

Let's put it this way: I've handled hundreds of ports just in the past few months. I do know what I'm talking about. Porting can and does take 2-3 weeks minimum for most VOIP providers - including us. If it took less time for you - you were just lucky.

Good for you. And I know what I am talking about, because I have do it too and have never had a port take longer than a week. And you qualified it, "most" providers. Not all!

Re: This is proof that the 'big guys' didn't understand VOIP

Sorry- I just want to make sure people are well-informed that it usually does take that long. Otherwise you're going to get people who port their number the very last minute, then get surprised when they get disconnected for 2 weeks.

While I congratulate you for your good luck in your own personal experience - this is by far not the standard experience in the industry. Users should base their timeframe on industry averages - not a single user's luck.

Start your port early - that's the only point I'm trying to make.

CallVantage Shuts Down

Verizon Voicewing deja vu all over again. I looked at Callvantage when Voicewing closed, only to find out they were not taking any new customers. Bad sign I deduced

I initially went to Verizon thinking that they would be rock solid in the VOIP market and was proven wrong. ATT was my second choice, oops wrong again.

Existing ATT customers should be happy. I found a VOIP for a lot less and no added taxes.

I don't know the exact prices for ATT U-Verse and Verizon's new fancy VOIP offering but all I want is a cheap working VOIP phone, not a bunch of stuff that costs more than POTS.

Re: CallVantage Shuts Down

I chose VOIPo as my replacement provider and while there were a few bumps in the road, they have been very quick to resolve the problems. I have been mostly pleased with my choice to go with VOIPo. Once they have the full stability and consistent quality I had with CallVantage I will be completely satisfied.

Wild speculation on my part but...

I can't help but to wonder whether Ma Bell isn't considering making an offer for Vonage.

Isn't the old adage..if you can't beat em..Join em?

Why my speculation?...well..first of all..the price.
Vonage stock is certainly very inexpensive right now trading at under 2 bucks a share..down from a high of almost 16.

»finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=VG#c···ndefined

And I can't seem to shake that recent news that was out about how quickly AT&T allowed Vonage to just move right on into their iphone territory.
AT&T could have killed that whole deal and didn't...but they (and apple) DID kill the google deal.

If you can't beat em..join em? Cheap stock. Letting them into the iphone market...

I wouldn't rule out at all a play on vonage by AT&T at this point if they're looking at expanding their VOIP market. The time seems ripe for it.

CV port to VoicePulse

All of 48 hours to get the CV number ported to VoicePulse.

My CV phone still rang minutes up to the port.

Non-Issue.

Not only was it a stepchild in the new AT&T, but it underpriced any non-bundled product the new AT&T offered. You still can't get UVerse BYOB and you never will. They want you to bundle with TV service.

There was no POTS, wireless or UVerse offering that could compete with CV. It was doomed.
