First it was hard to get. Now it's hard to get rid of.
(old news - 01:36PM Wednesday Feb 18 2009)
tags: dsl · business · telco · AT&T
As part of AT&T's merger conditions (pdf) when they acquired Bellsouth, they were forced to offer 768kbps DSL for $10. To (kind of) keep their promise, AT&T now offers the tier, but they don't tell anyone it's available. For a long time, the same could be said of dry loop (naked) DSL, also required as a merger condition, and equally hard to find (though that's improving). According to the Consumerist, AT&T naked DSL can sometimes be just as hard to cancel as it was to subscribe to.

$10 DSL

Not only is $10 DSL hard to get, it's not $10.

I signed up online for this about 18 months. Bought the modem, a basic phone line, etc. Then my bill shows up and they bill me $14.99 for the $10 DSL. I short pay $5 and include a letter with my payment and a copy of the online confirmation of the $10 price. next month same thing...+ a late fee for underpaying the previous month. I shortpay again and call them. After talking to at least 5 people they all tell me that my $10 DSL does not exist. I fax them a copy of where I signed up and it clearly showed $9.99 per month. They basically tell me tough, and it doesn't exist. So I cancel.

6 Months later a check shows up for ~$20 from att due to "billing errors".

Idiots.

Well, I signed up for the $10/month DSL service about 18 months ago, and every month I have been/am billed the correct $10/month for the service. I don't know why you had a problem, but I have not. And it is really a lot faster than I expected, and very reliable, so I am a happy customer, at least for now.

Re: $10 DSL

Hey Justin -
What was the secret to getting it? Do you have a contact in AT&T or what? Did you just ask the salesman and they hooked you up?

I read this specifically »www.fcc.gov/ATT_FINALMergerCommi···2-28.pdf and it says "not more than $20 per month." So I'm wondering how to pin them down on the $10 price point.

Also - does anyone know if Verizon offers naked dsl and at what price?

Call DSL and ask for it. The idiot reps on the Telco side can't sell naked DSL. I got it for my mom and she has phone too but only $9.95 a month for 2 years. Still had to order through DSL sales.

Cant sign up for Naked DSL

When i go to the AT&T website to sign up for DSL. DSL is available at my house as i had it threw Bellsouth a couple years ago. Well, I type in my all info under the DSL with no phone line option and it takes me to another page where i type in the same info. Hit submit and it does a big loop and i have to type my info in again. The process to get a DSL bundle with phone service can be done in like 5 clicks compared to the loop of getting it with no phone line.

Re: Cant sign up for Naked DSL

don' rely on their website. it is notoriously wrong. if you want up to date pricing, answers always call. and if you have any problems please feel free to post in the AT&T forums here on dslreports. there are lots of people there ready to give you answers.

I ordered it over the phone with no problems at all. Just call in and ask to get DSL Direct. They assign you a dummy phone number, and that becomes your account number, even though there's no voice service.

getting scared now

I do have dry loop dsl at 35/month and get this no other taxes. I am weary now to cancel since of this post. I do have issues when calling them since most of the time the account does not show up in the system or I need to be taken to a different department.

a cousin got it for 19.99 so no its not 9.99
he has a one year commitment too
yes the 768k tier called basic great deal indeed if i wasn't obsessed with speed i would have saved 25 to 35 dollars a month...
yes i have the expert 6.0 for 44.99
expensive indeed. i have cancelled service for surewest 10mbit/10mbit fiber optic broadband... 54.00
i may never come back to att
i now have one of the faster speed package
the only user i envy are those with 20mbit or higher

Maked DSL exist, but it's not $10. The $10 package requires landline service.

No. Two different services two different topics. The ability to get naked DSL is different from the abilty to get the $10 768K DSL. Both have with specific conditions to qualify.

and some States (like Ohio) don't tax Internet service, so if it costs $10 a month, then that's all you pay.

Anyone who knows about and has access to $10 768k, yet still sticks with dial-up, because it's cheaper ("I only pay $5 a month for my dial-up service!) is an utter moron who isn't looking at the bottom line....let us hope there is not a lot of those people.

Yes,

The billed me $14.99 before any other fees. Actually, they billed me $19.99 and then some dumb $5 "credit". At any rate it's probably the weirdest customer service experience I've ever encountered.

switched to uverse

I recommended a friend order dry loop DSL from AT&T. Install date came and went. She spent hours on the phone. Field techs came, said the problem was in the Central Office and field techs went. They couldn't figure it out for months. She ordered Uverse and it lo and behold, they told her the DSL was plugged into Uverse equipment the whole time. She ordered Uverse and the install went much smoother, but she pays a lot more.

I had the same issue. They didn't have my copper pair set up for DSL in the CO. They don't tend to keep their CO equip inline with the customers equipment.

There was a Uverse DSLAM on the line from the fridge near your house I guess, legacy DSL comes from an older RT, or the CO. AFAIK, some people qualify for Uverse DSL, yet don't for ADSL for the reason above.

the loop terminated in Uverse equipment at the CO, but there was a DSL modem at the prem.

My conjecture: the [automated] order went to the CO instructing them to plug the cable pair into Uverse equipment. Every time the trouble ticket went to the CO, the tech would close the ticket because the cable was terminated where the order specified. Due to line share regulation, AT&T can't tell itself the problem. Every department thinks they are okay.

Re: Where's Waldo

Yeah I immediately saw that when visiting the ATT site too. How can anyone claim they're not advertising it when it's right there on the front page of the DSL section?
Edit: page 3, number 3 of the referenced merger agreement notes the $10 offering, but states nothing about offering it naked for that price was required.

Re: Where's Waldo

just cause u saw it doesn't mean u get it. I tried to help sum1 get $10 dsl and used the link you have highlighted. Well if att had their ass straight, it would have been a one hour job. That link is trash (well there were extenuating circumstances but then the fault devolves to the att website as a whole, so they still suck ass).

You or the someone you "tried" to help has to "qualify". If you already have service, you can't get the $10 deal.

The pink elephant that no one mentions and what I find is

It probably helps as well to know your dry loop dsl number.

Most of them will be like a 030-xxx-xxx, 012-xxx-xxxx, it's a number you could never dial on a telephone. Most of them I have been seeing are a 0 for the first digit or a 1 sometimes. Most typically are a zero though.

keep that number in mind. Also with the automated "system" you could just tell it "I don't have one" then it should ask if you have uverse service or dry dsl. When you hit the "dry dsl" prompt enter your dry dsl number there.

you could also tell the system "I don't know it" and so far when I say that it transfers me to someone.

Re: The pink elephant that no one mentions and what I find is

Funny you mention that. When I tried to get the rebate for my DSL direct service the online rewards system kept prompting me for a number beginning with zero. Called support and no one knew what I was talking about.

My DSL direct number is a regular 770 area code number. Suffice to say after being transferred around 3 times I was able to get the free modem rebate.

Works good not to expensive, good speed, and not penalized as heavy as cable folks for not bundling. But as others have said I have not had to cancel.

Re: Like my naked DSL

I have 6mbps direct DSL with AT&T and had absolutely no problems ordering over the phone, it was fairly quick and everything I was told was correct. I was able to get my appointment for a tech bumped up by over a week so everything was ready to go within 4 days of ordering service (would have been quicker if I hadn't needed a tech).

Now tell me where it says 10$ DSL.
