AT&T Expands 10 Mbps Fixed Wireless Service

AT&T today announced that the company is expanding availability of its fixed wireless broadband service in Mississippi. Announced last April, AT&T's creatively-named "Fixed Wireless Internet" service features a 10 Mbps LTE connection with a 160 GB monthly cap. From there, users pay $10 per each 50GB of additional data consumed -- up to a maximum of $200 per month. The service costs $60 per month with a one-year contract, or $70 per month without a contract (and after the contract period expires).

Users that sign a contract and bundle the service with AT&T wireless or DirecTV will pay $50 per month, or $60 per month without a contract.

Originally only available in Atlanta and select portions of Georgia, the company last month announced it's expanding availability of the offering into eight additional states: Alabam; Florida; Kentucky; Mississippi; North Carolina; South Carolina; Tennessee and Louisiana. Like other fixed-wireless efforts, the service requires an outdoor antenna mounted on the consumer or business' roof, and an inside residential gateway.

This week, the company stated that residents in parts of 15 counties are included in the initial rural and underserved deployment in Mississippi that formally came online this week. All told this remains a relatively modest deployment for AT&T, with the company planning to reach 400,000 locations nationwide by the end of 2017, and over 1.1 million locations nationwide by 2020.

You can get a little more detail on AT&T's new fixed wireless service (and check availability) over at this AT&T website.

There is probably wisp's in the area maybe people should look into that before jumping on board with this. Support your local business instead of large corporations.

It's not even competitively priced.

Slow speed and low caps....and far too much cost for the speed. It's a joke and just meant I think to make people think they are trying to provide service, but it looks more like they are just trying to find new ways to pad their wallet.

So much for fixed wireless

Providers have tried selling consumers that the solution to these rural markets is fixed wireless. They don't have to invest much if anything into the markets in term of infrastructure and get to charge up to $200/mo for a whopping 10Mbs. That sounds just like what people were demanding. Who needs fiber optic when you can have this "great" service? I bet people will be lining up to drop their DSL service for this deal.

I especially like that $10 for each additional 50GB option. Everybody loves metered service.

The pricing wouldn't have seemed so bad 5-10 yrs ago when speeds were much lower and Comcast still had 250GB caps.

I see a lot of complaining...

This service is a godsend for people who have no other options. It's far more affordable per gig than using a normal wireless plan, and 10mbps is quite usable for most things online.

I'm not sure why there's so much complaining; this is the first reasonably priced cellular fixed-wireless offering I've seen. Verizon has one too but it's far more expensive. It would be even better if AT&T would let you bundle this with a cellular plan, but they're probably counting on the improved RF efficiency of a fixed directional antenna to offset the cost of the additional data.

Stingy behavior now more to come after T.W merger

I simply do not understand AT&T mobility's business reasoning behind this service. They offer unlimited postpaid hotspots, whpi, connected car plans but choose to offer these low data cap plans to rural america.

AT&T mobility has changed gophone to AT&T prepaid but has not made any robust changes to it's plans. AT&T stock prices has been slipping despite the pending merger. Something seems wrong. Everything smells of stingy conservative behavior It will be interesting to see their Q2 earning report.

Randall will jettison when his company finally implodes

I almost pity poor Randall and those that think that this "5G" will good enough once cord cutting internet streaming TV becomes the norm. But then again, the guy sure is a good snake oil salesman.

AT&T's Direct TV Now choked many times. Just imagine that trying to work on wireless. I can imagine how much anger the customers are going to be once they see their fixed wireless bill LOL.

Makes sense

This is really a service for those with DirectTV in rural locations. You don't need a high cap because you already subscribe to satellite with a DVR, streaming is not something you need to do.
