AT&T Expands Free Wi-Fi Hotzones To Charlotte, Chicago Collecting and analyzing data to see if expansion is worth it... Back in May, AT&T launched a massive free (at least to AT&T customers) Wi-Fi zone in New York City's Times Square, in order to help take some of the heat off of their 3G network in the area. AT&T today noted they're expanding this hotspot initiative with the launch of another free "hotzone" in Charlotte, North Carolina, with free Chicago Wi-Fi going live in a few weeks. According to AT&T this is still a "pilot project," and AT&T's collecting and analyzing user data to see whether this is something they'll continue doing: AT&T launched its first pilot Wi-Fi hotzone in New York City's Times Square in May, and customer usage has been better than expected. AT&T plans to further expand the pilot project with the launch of a third AT&T Wi-Fi hotzone in Chicago in the coming weeks...The expanded pilot program will allow AT&T to gather more information and customer feedback in order to continue to evaluate the benefits of Wi-Fi hotzones to provide another mobile broadband option for customers. AT&T of course is one of the largest Wi-Fi operators in the world now, with more than 20,000 hotspots. Most of those are at places like Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, and McDonalds, with all three now offering free Wi-Fi to any store patron. Last week AT&T unveiled their latest quarterly statistics for Wi-Fi use, which showed that the company handled 68.1 million connections during the second quarter on its public Wi-Fi network.

They have quite a few "Connection Zones" for scouts and scouters to get online or make calls home, and have WIFI all over the jamboree site. Not very dependable so far, but it's here anyway.
I will be dealing with that for the next week and a half so I hope it gets better. Look for some photos in the AT&T forum later in the week. -- Best of luck
