AT&T Finished Upgrading Upstream 3G Speeds
HSUPA upgrades completed in all but six markets....
AT&T today announced that the company is almost finished upgrading their existing HSDPA network with HSUPA technology (I'll note that's not to be confused with finishing HSDPA deployments). HSUPA boosts the upstream capability of their 3G wireless network to between 500kbps and 800kbps (it offers up to 1.4Mbps downstream). According to AT&T, their wireless broadband network is now available in 275 markets, a number they claim will reach 350 by the end of the year. HSUPA will be included in all future 3G deployments.

Ugh... I wouldn't mind it so much if they allowed VoIP or cheaper tethering. Also, there's a lot of areas w/o 3G they have to cover.

VOIP over EDGE doesn't work very well. The latency is too high and the bit rate is not guaranteed. Maybe 3G will be better.

Re: Can't Wait!

VOIP over edge works great on the iPhone - not sure what you were trying, but yeah, just like at home over DSL/Cable, every once in a while it has issues (anything will over IP) - but it works good enough to have an understandable conversation just fine.

Some coverage maps showing 3G areas

»www.wireless.att.com/cov ··· eviewer/
then select the 3G check box and zoom in to area you want to check. 3G areas are BLUE.

Here is a link that shows the 3G coverage by state & locality. Click on 1 and it zooms to that spot on the coverage map.

This map shows a nice national overview, but the AT&T maps allow you to zoom in to street level.

awesome awesome awesome map!

The ATT interactive map doesn't show 3G when zoomed out, only at city level. I think it was done that way to be a deterrent to not see the lack of 3G national wide, or see how little markets have it.

Major cities usually have 3g, if in a small city don't count on it. unless your close to a big city

The AT&T coverage map will show national. Just select the button 1 up from the bottom.

Re: Some coverage maps showing 3G areas

Also the map is wrong for my area. Shows my area having 3G as of 3/8/08 and it doesn't.

AT&T 3G Just lit up in my area

To my surprise last week I notice my Cingular 8525 PDA lit up with the 3G icon. This is great, and I wonder if I'll get the new upload speeds right away? We used to just have an EDGE network here, but it's nice to see I can finally make use of 3G at home.

Speed Boost?

Ouch, these speeds are barely faster than EVDO Rev 0, and not even close to EVDO Rev A (or B and C for that matter)

Keep in mind this is upstream, not downstream.

Re: Speed Boost?

BTW, is AT&T also upgrading those ancient T1 lines to the towers to match those revolutionary new speeds? No point having a 1.4 Mbps downlink if the tower itself is only 1 T1 line, with multiple users maxing it out.

Re: Speed Boost?

They dont just run a single line to the tower, its always run with multiple circuits otherwise it just wouldnt be cost effective.

"HSUPA boosts the upstream capability of their 3G wireless network to between 500kbps and 800kbps (it offers up to 1.4Mbps downstream)."

1.4Mbps downstream is between the speeds of Rev 0 (~700kbps down) and Rev A (3.1mbps down) EVDO, not even touching EVDO Rev B speeds yet

Down isn't much faster

I can sometimes get around 850 down, but it's usually around 400. The 8525 is such a slow device that it doesn't really matter anyway.
