AT&T Fixes Upstream 3G Problem
Promised fix to Alcatel Lucent 'software defect' arriving?
by Karl Bode Monday 26-Jul-2010 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers
Earlier this month, AT&T users in many markets suddenly found themselves with crippled upstream speeds -- with some users unable to even exceed 50 kbps. AT&T quickly responded to the complaints, noting that they'd found a software defect in Alcatel-Lucent equipment (which isn't in all markets). While an AT&T statement at the time claimed AT&T was "providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance," that wasn't really the case; users spent most of this month dealing with these crippled speeds. But based on a test we did this morning in the NY/NJ area, it looks like AT&T's finally deploying a software patch. We've dropped a line to AT&T to confirm and to see if they have a timeline for all impacted markets.

3G upstream now faster than my DSL

I was 50k up for the past two years here in downtown Chicago. Now I am getting 795k up. I am using the iphone 4, so not sure if that is the reason for the jump. My upstream on my phone is now faster than my ATT dsl connection. WTF

Wow

I can't believe it's been broken this long and more people haven't been given a bill credit or just raised more outrage.

Re: Wow

In my usage, I did not notice the drop in service. Yes I could see the issue via speed tests but in real life usage, the impacted number of users was probably significantly smaller.

I use my data a lot but mostly for streaming and other downstream realated activities. Upload volume is not significant.

still not fixed

My aircard is still getting 100kbps up, usually 700+ before this problem. I got one months credit, so about $64 with taxes. I better get another one if this isn't fixed by the next billing period, which it still isn't fixed as of now.

Cleveland area

Speeds are slow. I did about 6 tests on my 3GS. Download at the fastest getting 0.70Mbps and Upload at the fastest getting 0.08Mbps. Looks like still issues over here. The ping is over 2000 everytime to.

Re: Cleveland area

I'm in the Cleveland and Brooklyn area and my speeds were fixed a week ago. They are fixing the issues, just give them time.

Still Have Problem

At my house, I'm fairly confident I am affected by this bug. When I turn off wifi and do a speedtest.net app speed test over 3G, I'm now getting about 20 Kbps upstream and no more. Downstream speeds vary from 83 Kbps (!) to over 1000 Kbps. When I first got my iPhone 4 on June 24, the day it came out, speed tests at the same location were running in the range of 2-3 Mbps downstream and over 1 Mbps upstream.

The most annoying part? The other side of town doesn't have this issue and I get over 1 Mbps upstream.

As of 12Pm AT&T has vast outages in the NYC region due to the T Storms we had yesterday. No links was on the radio.
Anyone confirm. My service is shitty as ever.

swimming upstream

why would you give swimming upstream a bad name by associating it with ATT?? Salmon have been swimming upstream for their entire existence in order to spawn. If there was a problem with swimming upstream, there would be no salmon.

Maybe you didn't get the memo: »www.currentresults.com/Endangere···-usa.php

They aren't extinct yet, but they are having a lot of problems. So I guess AT&T users are a lot like salmon after all.

My current speed
I usually don't have an issue with service it's self. However, when I am paying $30/month for these speeds!

Re: Hope they fix this soon!

I had one yesterday that beat that (wish I had saved the screenshot)... 87 Kbps down and 3 Kbps up. :\

EDIT: I just realized you have your app set to display kB/s and not Kbps. So yeah... mine was even worse then.

Um... I wasn't even aware that 3G could hit 5 Mbps in the real world. ESPECIALLY in the AT&T NYC market.
