AT&T Fixing Atrix, Inspire Upstream Issues
'4G' Phones Didn't Even Have 3G Connectivity
by Karl Bode Monday 02-May-2011 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless
AT&T recently found themselves on the receiving end of some "4G" angst when customers realized that two of the smartphones the carrier proclaims are "4G" weren't able to upload at anywhere near 4G speeds. While AT&T wasn't clear when asked why, AT&T responses to Better Business Bureau complaints indicated that the HSUPA capabilities of these phones had been intentionally restricted -- despite AT&T having upgraded their network to HSUPA years ago. According to AT&T, a fix for the HTC Inspire has already been issued that finally allows it to upload at full speed, and a fix for the Motorola Atrix will arrive in a few weeks. "Users will get a message on their device notifying them of an update and to connect to Wi-Fi to download it," says AT&T. "After downloading it, the user needs to only allow the update to automatically install."

Right

A few week's. AT&T your pathetic. The Atrix was supposed to have the update last month. Also the second largest company with the smallest "4G" network. And slowest by far.

Regulation

This is why we need government regulation. Every time companies can pull a fast one, they do. Its tiring to always have to beat them back into their place. Its nice when you can have a government to do that for you. And in turn only have to beat the government back into its place...

Atrix Speeds

Not sure where the issue is, I upgraded to the Atrix over a month ago, and my speeds both down and up have been phenomenal. I've tested multiple times, with several servers and average 3.5-4mbps down, and 1.5-1.75 up.

Re: Atrix Speeds

So you're already on HSUPA? Mine has been on HSDPA ever since I got it about two months ago. Upload has never gone higher than 0.30Mb and the downloads are usually around 1 to 2 Mbps.
Were/are they intentionally doing this to keep the iPhone 4 their top phone?

I call BS totally. I had the Atrix until last week because of up and download speeds. My results were the same everywhere I went. Since I had the iPhone 4 prior, I know it isnt the network. I ended up back at the iPhone 4 and returned to 3.5-6.5 Mbps and 1.5-2.0 Mbps Up.

The only way you have those if you do is because its was a test phone that has no locked bootloader.

So now the captivate can do HSUPA, yeah right

Even the Captivate is capable of doing 4G, but it was crippled. I never customized my ROM, but there are many other there that have to get them up to actual speed.

I doubt AT&T will admit this and send a fix for the Captivate.

Oh, but do I wish the GPS would work right. No matter what I do, it still sucks.

WiFI for updates ?

Do ATT users really need to connect to WiFi to do their updates, or is the phone so broken it cant even download the update. ?

I guess thats one way to increase revenue encourage breaking your cap at home and on your phone!

That is what I was thinking. Wi-fi only? Come on. I had a complete android update several months ago which topped out at about 91 megabytes and my sprint device downloaded it automatically over 3g.

my verizon phone works the same way, it downloads updates as they come and installs it when the battery is charged enough.

Pre-update vs post-update Atrix 4G

Overall browsing is far less sluggish. After the update I had trouble connecting but it's fine now.

I still can't, and never will recommend this company however.
