AT&T Gets Latest RIM Smartphone Exclusive
Blackberry 9800 to be unveiled next week, new Storm models loom

According to Reuters, Research In Motion is expected to hold a joint announcement next Tuesday to unveil the new BlackBerry 9800, which will feature a new operating system, a revamped web browser and full slide-out keyboard. While the new 9800 will be unveiled next week, it won't officially hit store shelves until mid-August. Early leaks also seem to hint at a looming Storm 3 phone that should launch late this year on Verizon. The phone (like the 9800) is RIM's attempt to play catch up with Android by incorporating features like a portable 3G hotspot, 802.11N Wi-Fi, more RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera.

Let's spend money on getting more exclusives...

...rather than spending the money on our network.

Shrug

Why bother getting this phone if the network it is on imposes insanely low caps and ridiculously high overages? Might as well wait for devices like these to come out for networks with no such restrictions instead.

Re: Shrug

Really? Who uses 2 GB on a phone? If you do, get a damn laptop. Ive looked at my bills back 2 years and have never gone over 600MB, and I stream and do all the things everyone else does. As for the Network, Quit crying and go to Verizon.

Re: Shrug

Just checked my online account and I've used 1GB of data so for and I have 16 days left in by billing cycle from Sprint. I'll hit probably 2.5GB by the time the month is over. I stream Pandora, Sirius XM, do a lot of surfing, and streaming of high quality YouTube videos (Something you can't do on the iPhone on 3G).

AT&T blows chunks. In the month and a half I've had my Evo I've used more cellular data then I did in the 15 months I've dealt with the iPhone and that horrid POS service provider AT&T. Now that I actually have a reliable and fast mobile data provider I can take advantage of all the things smartphones have to offer instead of being stuck using AT&Ts subpar network.

With the new plans AT&T continues to rape their subscribers to no end. Glad I no longer have them and paying the $100 ETF to get away from that shitty company was a blessing.

Re: Shrug

And did leave and it was one of the best things I did. Sprint is so much better. I'm not crying, I'm stating the God's honest truth. What about if you use more then then 2GB like me? AT&T screws you.

People are simply letting others know what their experience with AT&T is... face it, AT&T as a corporation sucks and they love to screw their customer any chance they get.

Out of the major WIRELESS carriers, who is the one REFUSING to get with the program? Which carrier is the one who is giving customers BARELY enough bandwidth to check their e-mails and whatever social network they prefer? Which carrier normally makes it FIRST on the news about opposing whatever policies customers are trying to push on the hill? How about the company most likely to screw the customer by turning what should be included in the service into a random usage charge?

This wall of text crits you for $10,000, which just happens to be the same amount that AT&T would charge you every year in order to pay for their device exclusivity if they could.

Have you ever looked at how much data a BB actually uses? It's literally almost nothing. Everything is so compressed that it would take a near constant flow of data to actually put a dent in the 2GB cap; even 200MB.

Berry man

@myvzw.com
Blackberries are not the data hogs that your toys are. They do more with less. I use mine 20/7, do anything you can do with your toy, and have never come close to 2 Gigs. But then I can read, and don't need a video to explain everything.

Frowny face :(

I am deeply saddened by this. I understand RIM probably saw a nice huge check, and AT&F.U.Consumer loves to just throw cash to get what it wants. While I love my blackberry and want a new model, I won't sign over to that joke of a phone company for the newest model. If it ever hits Sprint I will get it, if I don't get an Evo before that.

Who gets a BlackBerry anymore? With the constant network outages and email issues I ditched them a while for my personal phone. Even my corporation allowed me to move to another device.

35% of the total smart phones are BBs. So, i would say millions of people.

Wait 3-6 months and another device will appear on competitors networks that is similar. This is how RIM works.

They will, in a month or two, but it will be for AT&T - in the US anyway.

To the OP; how many outages? BB is still rock solid compared to anyone else, it's just that their outages make headlines. Just like their security it making headlines. (being too strong)

Like a 1500 HP V12 in a Yugo

All of these powerful smart phones with all of the things they can do are getting plugged into a network that is lucky to support a Chevy V6. But you are still paying for the V12.

Attention all DSLR AT&T haters

Don't fret all you DSLR AT&T haters. With the exception of the Blackberry Storm (which STINKS and only stayed exclusive to Verizon because RIM was cranky with AT&T for pushing back roll out of the BOLD for the iPhone), RIM typically does not keep their handsets exclusive for extended (longer than 6 months) periods of time.

Is anyone really itching to get their hands on this device anyway? If you're answer is yes, you just have to wait a few extra months...

Interesting.. I have AT&T, I am well informed (and educated) and demanding... and happy... so what's your point? I was poking fun at a certain audience.

There are many of us on this forum that meet your criteria but are not AT&T haters. Some of us just have an easier time seeing the bigger picture...

Canada Release Date

Reading from Reuters... its going to be October? A couple months late from US?

Funny how a Canadian company treats Canada that way... I guess they have bigger market down the border...

...i personally find it funnier since they're literally across the street...

9800 - Thumbs up

I've saw the 9800 a few months ago. The only issue involved the battery not sitting right so when you slid out the keyboard the back would pop lose and dislodge the battery. It was the only adjustment to be made. My buddy had it over and we successfully did a number of calls handing off between VOIP and Provider.

I can say it was the first BB I've used and did not find a flaw with. I think it will really surprise people. The new OS is what RIM has been lacking. Now the OS will look more consumer friendly but still have all the professional features.

Verizon learned their lesson with the 9530

No more laggy piles of shit that don't work right with poor build quality.

To my knowledge, you still can't view email subfolders on IMAP accounts, you can't sync numerous calendars on your phone so you can view them separately.

Push mail is a 1 trick pony that everyone else has now.

Apple subsidizes their competition

To be honest, when I read all of these "exclusive" deals with various phone makers and AT&T, I can only think that the profits that Apple helps AT&T reap, somehow makes it possible to offer these other subsidized phones.

RIM has a higher share, but Apple produces the margins.

I am just wondering why the USA is such a closed country when it comes to RIM and Apple - both are in bed with AT&T, seem counter productive to me.

At least Apple sells the device unlocked in Canada...if you want to shell out the cash and as long as your network is GSM (I do believe)

Hmm...

"The phone (like the 9800) is RIM's attempt to play catch up with Android by incorporating features like a portable 3G hotspot..."

catch up with Android, who scrambled to catch up with Palm, who did it first AND cheaper (now).
