AT&T Goes AkimboSnuggles up for Homezone content ( old news - 12:44PM Tuesday Apr 18 2006) tags: Video · telco · contentSince "Project Lightspeed" VDSL and IPTV upgrades will clearly take some time, AT&T hopes to tide many customers over with "Homezone". The service uses a 2Wire Media-Portal to integrate DSL-driven content with Echostar satellite television. AT&T today announced they have struck a deal with indie set-top video provider Akimbo to provide some content for the new service. According to the release, AT&T plans to offer content from Akimbo's library of 10,000 TV programs and movies. "The service will have an online guide that enables AT&T Homezone subscribers to view a comprehensive listing of all Akimbo videos and movies. To help subscribers find videos that match their interests, the on-screen guide features a video search function, full program descriptions and video previews. Customers can also access the guide remotely from an Internet-connected computer to browse and download programs so that new shows are available for viewing when they get home." Currently in trials in several markets, the Homezone service is expected to launch this summer. Related:- Verizon Unveils FiosTV Multi-Room DVR

4 edits | Pretty cool device Dual tuner HD/DD DVR, DVD recorder pretty cool.
In looking at the specs though, it says download and play...I guess it doesn't stream the WM9 or MPEG2? Also it's IPTV OR satellite? This according to their descpription on the device page.
said by 2wire : Service combines satellite TV programming with Internet-based video on demand, music on demand, Caller ID, digital photo-sharing and remote access...
From this PR I guess they'll have a separate DN sat receiver and then this box for VOD.

| Re: Pretty cool device I wonder how it will work with the premium content... Akimbo has a lot to offer even without the premium content. They have everything from the cartoon network to HereTV (LGBT programming) to BBC to cooking shows to Naked News (and other adult programming). Granted some of that stuff requires either a subscription or a fee. It's still pretty awesome and the fact that they are teaming up with AT&T is probably a great thing for the company. | |

| Re: Pretty cool device Some of the pricing leaves something to be desired... I pay around $16 a month to get what I want to watch... It is going to be pretty awesome when they start offering MovieLink movies I think... They have already started delivering HD content, I wonder if they are going to do movies in HD.. | |

Obviously ATT's IPTV strategy will win in the long run, but right now we have Dish Network/ATT and Directv/BellSouth and both have different IPTV rollouts and strategies planned. It's going to take a lot to move me away from my DirecTV/TiVo combo, but it will happen eventually.
