AT&T Greenlights Slingbox Over 3G
Sling created new, bandwidth-friendly version...
by Karl Bode Thursday 04-Feb-2010 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · content · net-neutrality · consumers
In addition to blocking Skype from working over 3G (a block that was recently lifted) you might recall that AT&T also blocked the iPhone Slingbox app from working over their 3G network. In May of last year, AT&T issued a statement saying that the application was blocked because it "could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network." Of course that congestion was happening anyway due to iPhone users, and many users felt AT&T was involved in selective reasoning, given they banned Slingbox, but allowed the streaming of Major League Baseball games.

But after some negotiations with Sling, and as AT&T makes strides in boosting wireless capacity, AT&T's now apparently willing to open the doors and will be allowing Slingbox over 3G. According to a company statement, AT&T has been testing a new, bandwidth-friendlier version of the app since mid-December, and the telco has just informed Sling Media and Apple that the optimized app can run on its 3G network.

"The key for AT&T was that Slingbox was willing to work with us to revise the app so it was more bandwidth sensitive," says AT&T. "They made important changes to more efficiently use 3G network bandwidth and conserve wireless spectrum so that we were able to support the app on our 3G mobile broadband network."

Combined with the decision to allow Skype to operate over 3G, this is good news for fans of "open" wireless networks. It's also a welcome indication that AT&T's going to be flexible, or at least realizes that trying to fight evolution may be a futile endeavor. You might want to send a little thanks the FCC's way, given their recent network neutrality inquiries into why certain applications were being blocked (like Google Voice), probably lit a bit of a fire under AT&T's posterior.

Fail

This is going to fail; ATT's network congestion problems havent gotten any better (no matter what the fancy colorful charts say). Every person I know that has ATT complains about the network connectivity problems, across multiple states.

I must be the only one who has no problems with AT&T's 3G service throughput on either the iPhone or LaptopConnect card. I travel quite a bit (only to major cities) and never see less than 1Mb throughput and typically 2Mb down (384ish up).

I never have problem with ATT either, once in a while , i get call failed, but its not typical.

Me either. My iPhone is fast and consistently gets just under 2Mbps down in most locations. The NOTwork (Big Red) is definitely not the be all and end all.

I do own a Slingbox and can't wait!

Well now you know someone that has no problems with AT&T's network. Its me. AT&T is great here. ~5Mbps avg download speeds with speeds dropping to ~2Mbps at peak times. Still able to stream video w/o problems. Only thing I get is a drop call once in awhile but thats it.

I don't have a slingbox but now I'm thinking about it. I for one can't wait for Skype to allow calls over 3G. Tried it with the app Fring and it worked great. Should be better with the official app.

I have no problems either, at least not in Florida -- AT&T's 3G network seems consistently robust in my neck of the woods. Never any problems. In fact, I already own a Slingbox, so now that 3G streaming is getting the greenlight I might actually buy the iPhone app.

As far as AT&T goes, my house in suburban Detroit is a completely different story -- it's a crap shoot whether you can even place a call from there. Must be a dead zone.

I have had my iPhone for 14 months here in NYC. For most of that time my download speeds were on average 300 to 400 kbps, inconsistent, and sometimes as slow as 120 kbps.

Recently there has been an improvement. I am now seeing average speeds of 1mb, once as high as 1.2mb. That's better than a three fold improvement. It has become more stable and more consistent as well.

I used to keep the phone on wifi here at home even though I have 1mb dsl through a wifi router. Now I can actually use the 3g on the phone. It is actually faster than my dsl connection. Guess all the complaining, and bad press paid off.

You must think that there are millions of people just waiting to jump on their slingbox using the iPhone.

This is not going to hurt them one bit.

Edit: I responded to the wrong post. This is in response to the "FAIL" post above.

I agree. $30 while certainly not obscene is quite a barrier that would stop a sling-flood.

Even on Verizon, streaming video over 3G is nearly useless the majority of the time. It skips and buffers too much unless the quality is kicked down to near unwatchable.

I stream video from my home server all the time over Verizon without issue. It was AT&T that constantly skipped and buffered for me, even if I kicked the bitrate down to 250Kbps.

What programs are you using? I have used Androrb, LukLuk, and the NBA League Pass app, and they are very hit or miss, even when I am in a ~2Mbps area.

I stream video files directly through the media player from my home web server.

I'm on Sprint and I've been using the WinMo version of this app for about a week(graphically it's identical). I will say that I am impressed with how smooth the streaming is now, especially in landscape(which is all you can do now, no more viewing in portrait).

Now, while I praise the smoothness of the streaming, I'm not fond of their softening of the overall picture. The previous version the picture was much sharper, albeit a bit more choppy. I also don't like the lack of options. They really dumbed down the overall app to simplistic levels. The prior version allowed you to set bit rates and other advanced options, to get the best picture/smoothness possible. Now it's High or Low and that's it.

As an FYI, I'm using it on a Sprint Touch Pro 2.

Add me to the list of satisfied users. My 3G speeds here in Providence have actually increased over the past few weeks, and about 6 months ago 3G was lit up in my small town in CT. Besides the obvious areas I know a call may drop I have no complaints.

More users streaming video will bring the A&T network to its knees that much quicker.

Good news for all the slingbox owners

personally, I jailbroke my iPhone to allow this to work over 3G. But I'm glad to see it's now fully supported.

And just for the record, with a strong 3G signal, it worked fairly well.

What program did you use, if you don't mind me asking? I'd like to do the same, since I don't want to wait for apple/at&t to stop dragging their feet.

at the time it was a program called "tricker3g" but there are alternatives now. I'm not sure what the latest ones are but they are out there. Check youtube.

I'M so happy to see this feature coming to reality, Ive been waiting for this for years!

I was thinking about watching tv on my phone (windows phone at the time) Back when I got my slingbox solo about 4 years ago.

This is good news....

Good job on the FCC's part for drawing enough attention in getting AT&T to loosen up a bit. Enough consumers made enough noise to get the FCC to snoop around into this situation. This is very cool.

AT&T doesn't need to worry...

Our iPhone batteries will die long before the app causes any major network disruption. Joking aside, I'm looking forward to this finally becoming a reality. Let the slacking at work increase two-fold.

Welcome to 2007 iPhone users

I've been using Slingbox on a WinMo phone on 3G before the iPhone even had 3G. One of the many reasons I'll pass on that phone...but the main two are no keyboard and the crazy price you have to pay for the plan on it.

Wow, congratulations.

By the way, you were violating ATT's tos by doing that. And iphone users have been able to do the same for some time now, if willing to jailbreak and also violate the TOS.

Maybe another article will show up that will provide you a more accurate opportunity to troll.

Re: Welcome to 2007 iPhone users

Strange. ATT notated my account that Slingbox on my Blackberry was ok and I have Blackberry International. Watching it in Detroit is one thing, but the CSR told me (and notated it afterwards) that it was ok to use it when I was in Russia.

I can't violate the AT&T's TOS since I'm not with AT&T. Yes, I know they can hack it, but I was speaking about ordinary non-techy people and the others not wanting to modify their phones.

Can't wait for the next one! Thanks.

The paper the TOS are printed on isn't worthy enough to wipe my ass with. Both Apple and AT&T can take their TOS and shove them! I paid $300 for my iPhone and can do anything with it I damn well please.

Sling calls bulls**t

This is hilarious. Sling says they didn't change anything in their app and calls bulls**t on AT&T press release.
