Glitches worked out, brakes coming off...
(old news - 01:54PM Wednesday Dec 06 2006)
tags: Video · business · content · TVIP
The good news? AT&T has insisted that the company is going to deploy U-Verse VDSL and IPTV to fifteen to twenty markets by the end of the year. The bad news? It's December sixth, and they only just launched their second market - Houston. Despite the slow progress, AT&T CFO Rick Lidner insisted yesterday that "all the pieces are in place," they've ironed out the packet-loss related image quality issues we discussed back in June, and it's full speed ahead.

"The Microsoft software, the new set-top boxes, the operating support systems, we’re ready now to go forward and launch additional markets and we're ready to expand the markets where we have launched," says Lidner. This Light Reading report lists the likely deployment cities. Judging from the deployment observations by our users, the California markets are getting very close to launch.

while that may be true (high speed data for students), many (most) would go for decent prices. I personally go for the best cost/service that I can find. Currently, its DSL Extreme for > $25 for 3Mbps.

Can't wait for U-verse. I've had the 6/768 line with SBC for a while.. best bang for the buck imo. If U-verse does indeed launch here in Little Rock this year I'll be pretty happy. Anything's better than Comcast. They're terrible, atleast where I live.

Im just thankful they said they are launching out in benton, AR this next summer so we finally get highspeed in our area. ATT has been pulling fiber all over town preping for it.

Sucks that we don't have the option of a cable company, stupid comcast only services a very small portion, and charter just sucks.

Re: "All the pieces are in place"

charter worse than sucks they provide no servies beyond digtal cable. And they had the nerve to show up to the city council meeting to fight ATT spreading to the area with the new services. But they were politely told that they promised all these services over a year ago and still have done nothing so they have nothing to add to the discussion. charter that is. I laugh when i get an ad in the mail from charter advertising three pakages of cable not even enough to qualify for the multi-service freebies that they are giving out for signing up like the resturant gift cards. It's like hey sign up for our sub standard service and get a subscription to entertainment weekly. LOL what ever

Re: "All the pieces are in place"

That's why I said that they suck. They don't offer internet. Where I'm at now (off of river st.), I have a grand total of 1 choice - AT&T. To top it off, according to the diagnostic page on my DSL modem, there's an exposed wire somewhere and the service goes out when it rains.

Re: "All the pieces are in place"

I live right off of northshore well within the city and no DSL there at all but we did just have a wireless company start up offering service for $250 for the equipment no contract and 384 down 128 up for $40 dollors a month. Really sad to tell the truth.

Complaining...

Seriously - this whole joint whines about the lack of competition and then whines when the competition picks up because it's apparently not up to their standards.

You can't have it both ways. I swear some of you people live to whine...

Re: Complaining...

It's the lack of competition which is helping to facilitate such crappy offerings based on stop-gap measures intended only to help maintain the companies bottom line.

We will be re-visiting this issue in a year or so when AT&T reaches the limits of their temporary solution and has to do the very thing that they say they don't need now. FTTH

It should all be very entertaining.

The fact remains that we only have two main choices for TV and only two main choices for Internet.

Re: Complaining...

It's not really about balance. It's really about the fact that a majority of this country would like true broadband and actual options. You are witness to a small microcosm of what is really a major attitude of this country in general about broadband.

For example:

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In my old and established neighborhood I have 1 option for broadband (Cox) and 2 options for TV (Cox or Satellite service). DSL is not even an option for me. Why is that? I live in a major city in Louisiana and I have exactly 1 choice for broadband.

The solution is two-fold actually.

1. Municipal fiber offerings.
2. Cable/Phone companies either get out of the way of Muni offerings or decide to provide the EXACT same service themselves on THEIR OWN DIME.

I bet if they spent more money on innovations and actually providing services and speeds that people want they would find it to be quite profitable.

That group is in the minority and more than likely may not even have had dial-up or even a computer at home.

The MAJORITY of this country is effected by Broadband as it plays a role in the MAJORITY of things we do in direct and in-direct ways.

Yeah, if you knew what you were talking about, you'd realize that such a suggestion is likely to go nowhere because the telcos and MSOs would likely team up and use the courts and lobbying power to stop any new startups.

Reality dictates that getting a new startup just isn't going to happen.

They are a CLEC... Are they actually overbuilding in the last mile or are they just selling services over the existing ILECs infrastructure ?

We're talking about a new player coming in and taking on the ILEC where they still hold the monopoly... Infrastructure.

Yes they are a new and they are overbuilding. It can be done, but it does involve a lot of investor risk.

The hell with lightspeed, people in my neighborhood are lucky if they can get qualified for the basic package with no cable modem available either. Give us a live RT we don't even know what that's like yet!

Re: It doesn't matter

It stands to reason that AT&T is going to provide future HSI service on it's new network. In which case, it would be kinda dumb to provision more CO's for DSL, dont you think?

Once they get their new network in, all they need to do is run coaxial cable the last mile (like cable does) to have just as capable network as cable does.

Then, a few years down the road, they can put in fiber as needed, since they will not need extreme bandwidth capability in all parts of their network, such as BFE small towns.

The problem isn't CO's being lit. The problem is there are still many outlying areas with POTS RTs that can't get DSL yet when all they have to do is implement ADSL cards.

'The problem is there are still many outlying areas with POTS RTs that can't get DSL yet when all they have to do is implement ADSL cards.'

It'smoreinvolved than that. Bandwidth doesn't appear from nowhere. You need T-1s first of all. Second only SLC series 5 can be upconverted straight from POTS to ADSL. SLC96, DISCS, Litespan, starspan, etc AFAIK don't have a simple card swap solution.

Doesn't that very same thing happen with comcast where the picture freezes as well as the sound, or, gets all pixelated? It does here just on my analog cable. Maybe cable isn't the shiznit everyone thinks it is?
