AT&T Installing LTE Gear in Apple Stores?
Preparing for Eventual Launch of LTE iPhone
An LTE iPhone this year remains unlikely, but if Apple were to launch an LTE-capable iPhone this fall -- AT&T would take yet another PR hit. AT&T will have just 15 markets wired with LTE by the end of this year, compared to Verizon's 175. That's a large gap that would make for more of the kind of broadband marketing fodder Verizon angered AT&T with back in 2009, when big red highlighted how many AT&T users could only connect at EDGE (128 kbps) speeds. Networks aside, it's reported that Apple's still not happy with battery consumption on the LTE iPhone, currently being tested by carriers. Meanwhile, Engadget has posted a photo purportedly from an Apple store showing LTE hardware installed by AT&T (since removed by available elsewhere) -- suggesting AT&T and Apple are prepping in-store LTE extenders to give the illusion of broader LTE coverage whenever the LTE iPhone does launch. When that launch will be is unclear, though AT&T plans to launch their AT&T network in five cities this summer.

Health and fooling customers?

I hope they tell the customers. I see 2 reasons for them to tell the customers. First, I'm not sure it is healthy unless they dractiscly decreased the signal strength. Second, so the customer knows the signal reception and speed test are going to be near perfect due to the proximity of the antenna.

Re: Health and fooling customers?

health? Americans spend more time near a running microwave than they would in the Apple store. So that wouldn't be all that bad. Also the antennas could be outside - which may not even work inside due to the fact that the antennas are designed and are placed to work like an umbrella- the closer you are the worse the signal gets due to it "rains" out word.

Re: Health and fooling customers?

You can claim all the 3G LTE whatever you want, its the backhaul off the tower and if its still on a T1 line guess what, you will not exceeded 1.5 mb/s down

You think Apple stores don't have more than a T1?

I assume they're referring to towers out in the wild and not at an Apple Store. Apple Store wifi speeds seem decent but I've never actually tested it.

AT&T towers have a lot more than a T1 going to them now. In the Chicago area they've been pulling fiber for the last 2 - 3 years. They're going all the way out to Rockford with it.

Re: Health and fooling customers?

I should of actually read the post my apologize yes that is the main reason I stick with AT&T because they have to do forklift upgrades and since they are doing them they are increasing the backhaul of their sites

Easier directions?

Maybe AT&T will use LTE as a direction-finder for the closest Apple store.

Network Planning

Distributed Antenna Systems are the next thing. It goes to show that AT&T is actually thinking about building a network rather than buying a bunch of small ones and hoping for the best.

Re: Network Planning

buying smaller networks is how the cell phone company's got to be what they are today- except for Sprint. VZW/CellCo Partnership is just that- a TON of smaller companies complied together to create a network. TMO is the same way; VoiceStream and Omnipoint. They create TMO-USA. ATT is also a ton of smaller companies combined; Ameritech Mobility, Bell South Mobility, ATT Wireless, Cingular, PacBell Mobility, the list keeps going on.

Illusion or necessity?

So how does an Apple store test product for warranty when it has no LTE signal?

Wow, I was just joking.

Before when I posted they would put 1 LTE microcell in every city to claim nationwide coverage I was just joking.

I guess they are actually going to go that route.

wait for it...

then the fanboi's will claim Apple invented LTE, that the proof is "it is in the Apple Store!". I'm surprised they haven't claimed Apple invented electricity, yet.

I think apple invented gravity. I recall this in one of my history books as a child.
