AT&T LTE Arrives in Philly, Wilmington, Albany
Now Launched in Part of 65 Markets Nationwide
by Karl Bode Monday 17-Sep-2012 tags: competition · coverage · business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless · LTE
On the heels of recent expansion earlier this month, AT&T today announced that the company has brought their shiny new LTE network to four new markets. According to the AT&T website, the carrier has launched LTE services in Albany and Rochester, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware. According to AT&T's handy-dandy LTE infographic (pdf), the carrier has now launched LTE services in part or all of 65 markets, with plans to reach 100 before the end of the year, and all current HSPA+ markets upgraded to LTE by the end of 2013. The launch of the iPhone 5, as excpected, has drawn greater scrutiny to AT&T's LTE coverage or lack thereof, especially when compared to Verizon's (371 markets).

Look at how many of AT&T's coverage areas are still on EDGE! It is laughable how they brag about their "4G" network with so many areas that they never bothered to upgraded to 3G.

Yep our area just got at&t 3G like 6 weeks ago. Meanwhile my Verizon phone is showing a 4G signal. Who knows how long it will take at&t to get 4G here. Considering it took them 4 years longer than Verizon to get 3G here........

Southwestern Bell (i.e. re-badged AT&T) is nothing short of a joke.

Unable to make calls in NYC, which is interesting considering that no other carrier has this issue. How about snail speed data in other metro areas etc etc etc.

In addition, just because an area is hsdpa enable, does not mean that AT&T has the capacity for the user to realize these speeds. I have to literally wait until 4am to achieve anything over 2mb.

Speaking of their faux 4G. It's typically capped at 8mb dl and 1mb up in most places anyway. Versus the 42mb DC-HSPA 64 qam offered by a range of equivalent wcdma carriers abroad.

I've hit better than 14Mbps on my Samsung SII on HSPA+ on American Theives and Thugs (AT&T)

Virtually 100 percent of AT&T146;s wireless network is covered?

I trust that as much as I trust that AT&T's network is 'virtually' 100% HPSA+. There's a lot of 2G/EDGE/GSM stuff out there.

Virtually 100 percent of AT&T’s
wireless network is covered by
HSPA+, which, when combined
with enhanced backhaul, enables
4G speeds

Yeah, AT&T lies on that. I know plenty of places that still provide 2 Mbps or lower speeds (over HSPA+ probably, or maybe just HSPA), and still others where EDGE is the only thing available.

Verizon, no holds barred, has the best 4G network out there right now. I'm hard-pressed to say who is the distant second...T-Mobile's H+ network is actually a decent stand-in for LTE, but AT&T does have the real deal in a few dozen markets now...

Saw that too, what I like considering I regularly see E outside metro areas.

AT&T LTE

Had Verizon 'til 2008, switched to AT&T Summer 2008-Summer 2010, then promptly back to Verizon. Gave AT&T a try. Simply put, they don't cut it compared to VZW, even in my area that has gone 3G/HSPA+ - AT&T much more inconsistent with speeds. Signal strength seemed to drop faster when moving away from a tower. It also flux'd a lot more. VZW seems to hold a steady signal. 3G coverage, VZW in this area puts AT&T to shame. Still too much EDGE regionally. To each is own I guess.

There is a huge chunk of northern Michigan that is still 2G. Probably be that way until they shut off 2G.

Expanding Faster

They are well behind Verizon but if you take a look at att.com/network, they have many more markets listed as "Coming Soon."

I think the HSPA+ -> LTE upgrades will go faster than the EDGE -> HSPA+ because the fiber is already there, it's just on them to add their equipment.

Because they have more markets to expand to because Verizon has is far ahead. Also that doesn't mean anything. Verizon expands every 3rd Thursday of the month. And they usually add 2-3 dozen new markets each time and an equal amount of expansion within existing 4G markets. So do the math.

LTE can go much faster that UMTS/HSPA as its data only, and no refarming of spectrum needed.
3G on At&t needed both refarming and dealing with voice as well as 2g/3g voice handoffs.

Twaddle

@comcast.net

So what?

AT&T could announce the 2nd coming of Christ but it isn't relevant when what they say they offer and what they deliver are miles apart. Same goes for every other service provider. Thy can't and won't deliver anywhere near what they advertise or allude to in their bogus marketing BS. When they can deliver what they advertise to a large metropolitan. Community like New York, SF bay, LA etc then maybe then they will be credible
