AT&T Launches Pilot Wi-Fi Service In Times Square
Free to AT&T customers only, carrier may expand idea...

As part of their quest to ease congestion on the NYC 3G network, AT&T has announced that they've launched free Wi-Fi service in New York City's Times Square -- if you're an AT&T customer. According to AT&T, the test is "a pilot deployment to explore the use of Wi-Fi to provide an additional mobile broadband option in areas with consistently high 3G traffic and mobile data use." AT&T says that depending on the results of the pilot, they may build out service in additional cities where congestion warrants. Of course AT&T already operates a significant hotspot network at more than 20,000 locations nationwide.

They didn't already...

...have WiFi in Times Square?

As the blurb mentions, AT&T already operates a LARGE WiFi network. I can't imagine they missed Times Square. Especially since they also manage the hotspots in all Starbucks locations....and starbucks is, what, every third store in NYC?

It would have been nice if they had deployed UMA instead of a half-assed femtocell solution. Then they could have really taken advantage of their WiFi network and eased congestion.

There is free wi fi in Times Square. I don't think it's AT&T's though. It may be from Yahoo or times square alliance. I don't see many starbucks in TS proper. I should check when I go out for lunch. There is Mcdonalds.

Next Stop for Att Wifi...

Since it is obvious their mobile network can't handle the traffic they will need to do this at every stadium in the country too. They are a joke. Last few games I have gone to, the phone has dropped all the way to GPRS or GSM only service.

Maybe it's cheaper than more cells?

If more of their customers use WiFi, that's less using their data service. Or, another way to look at it is, if their data service is overloaded, their customers can hop on the WiFi instead and alleviate congestion. Great idea

The press release says it is a b/g network. Do any of their phones work with the 'n' standard?

What of the rest of Manhattan ?

A few measly blocks on the island, usually haunted by tourists.
What of the rest of the island and it's workers and residents ?
