story category AT&T Launches U-Verse In Los Angeles
Well, portions of Los Angeles anyway...
(old news - 05:00PM Tuesday May 01 2007)
tags: prices · Video · competition · business · telco · TVIP
AT&T has introduced their U-Verse IPTV system in Los Angeles, their sixteenth major market launch. Portions of Altadena, Anaheim, Burbank, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Glendale, Laguna Niguel, Orange County, Santa Ana, Santa Clarita and Tustin will be the first to see service. AT&T's U-Verse offers VDSL broadband service in three flavors:
•Elite: Downstream up to 6.0 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps•Pro: Downstream up to 3.0 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps•Express: Downstream up to 1.5 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps.
AT&T is offering two free months of TV to new users, and they're offering a year's worth of free HD service (as previously mentioned) to users who bundle. AT&T offers TV packages alone, priced out as such:
•U-Family: 50 channels, $44•U100: 100 channels, $44•U200: 190 channels, $59•U300: 240 channels, 34 premium channels, $79•U400: 300 channels, 49 premium channels, $99
The company currently offers 27 HDTV channels. Here are the TV prices when bundled with broadband VDSL service (Express/Pro/Elite per month):
•U-family: $59/$64/$74•U100: $59/$64/$74•U200: $74/$79/$89•U300: $94/$99/$100•U400: $114/$119/$129
Additional detail on DVR rentals, their channel lineup and AT&T's qualification tool are, of course, available at the U-Verse website. As always, your questions can be answered by the helpful folks in our U-Verse forum.

Good upload.

When compared to other services, I think the upload is good enough. I mean, they are still keeping the 1mb up for the 1.5mb package.

Really, nice to see a company offer an almost symmetrical speed when the download is capped at 1.5.

Looks like a good deal to me. Too bad AT&T is nowhere around here though.

But remember you cant get "Uverse Enhanced DSL" without Uverse TV. If you discontinue Uverse TV you get put back on ADSL, and if ADSL was never available to you before Uverse, it wont be afterwards. You have to bundle.

Yep, upload is good. When I went with Uverse a few weeks ago, I downgraded from POTS Elite DSL 6mb to Uverse 3mb. 3mb/1mb is a good balance for me and the 6mb is not worth the extra 15 bones/month.

The free modem/wireless router rental is nice. Didn't have to pay for it and then wait for a rebate or rent one from Comcastic. I just turned my old router into a switch.

Getting to program which shows to record remotely is nice. An HD Tivo cost $400-500 and Dish wanted $300+ for their HD PVR when I was looking a year ago. Looks like its cheaper now.

Funny thing is that the customer support at the local stores have never heard of it.

Also, even though I'm right in the middle of Santa Clarita and fairly close to the CO, I don't Uverse shows my address is no good for service

Well, I've had a VRAD sitting at the end of my development for about a year now, and still no availability on my end of Santa Clarita either. Whatever.

I feel sorry for you guys that feel that this would be a good deal for you. IT makes me feel bad that the USA is just that far behind in broadband.

This technology is obsolete in many areas before they even release it. And god forbid if you have to deal with line quality issues like with dsl.

Verizon has the right idea. If and when I leave Michigan that number one consideration will be if fios is available.

Having 3mb/1mb at home and 1.2mb/700 Kbps on the road is not bad at all.

Not having to deal with whats pictured, is priceless.

Eh? VDSL and VDSL2 is not an obsolete technology. It's becoming more common throughout the world as copper loops get replaced. FTTP is still a small percentage of users globally.

Yeah, in Japan they get like 100 mbs. And we're happy about 6. I think unfortunately AT&T over-advertises, so to speak, their new U-verse service supposedly being rolled out. In reality it seems to be only in a few limited areas. For example in San Antonio it's supposed to be where they're testing it, however no one I knows there can get it. The few review I've read about it indicate it doesn't seem ready for prime time. For example you can only watch like 2 HD feeds at a time, as opposed to cable where of course it doesn't matter how many TVs.

The US is screwed technologically thanks to the de-regulation scam and propaganda. But what does it matter how we're really doing, when we have nice little commercials with fake planes flying logos and touting how we have the most advanced network on earth?

Re: agree

I believe that they eventually will offer faster speeds. The current profile offers 26mb down but is divided into TV & Data. The max is close to 80mb per sec so I can see AT&T offering faster speeds in the future. Also distance will play a part depending how far you are from the VRAD, you will only be able to qualify for certain tiers.

Family pkg disincentive

# U-Family: 50 channels, $44
# U100: 100 channels, $44
The same price for these 2 pkgs. The Family pkg has 50 channels and the U100 pkg has 100 channels. But the price is identical and except for the extra 50 channels, U100 includes almost every channel in the Family pkg. I guess the FCC's Family pkg plan has a premium price for getting rid of those un-family type channels. So much for a la carte pricing.

I think its $30-$40. There's a $10 discount if you subscribe to video.

It might be a rip-off for you because you have 10/1 available but for some people it will be good. For example me, I only have 1.5/384 available through Embarq. Even if I get the 1.5/1 package from ATT it will still be much better than what I have now and the 6/1 will be a real step up from what I have.

I guess its all relative, this will be good for some people that pretty much dont have good deals available to them but it will also be a rip-off for people that have good cable deals available. People that have FIOS, OOL, etc, will look at this and laugh but not everyone is in that position. As I said, if i get any of this service available to me, it certainly wont be a rip-off, actually it will be pretty good.

I checked my order form for the Uverse and my 3mb/1mb DSL is $30 but $10 off because I have Video + Internet so its $20 for 3/1 internet. And 6mb/1mb was $10 more so $30 for 6/1 I think.

1.5/1 was like $15.

Big deal

6/1 Mbps is all you can get? This is supposed to compete with FIOS? Hell even with cable I'm getting 10/1 Mbps. So why would I switch?

at&t isn't meant to compete with FiOS... Verizon and at&t don't service the same area.
The only way I was wanting to switch was for lower cost... and it really isn't there. at&t Uverse TV is more exensive than my DirecTv.

It's not more expensive to me. I have DirecTV also with everything and my bill is $111/mo add in my Phone/DSL bill of $75/mo and the total is $186 If I move to U-Verse My bill will be $129/mo. I'll be happy to save $57/mo and to increase my UL to 1mb from 608k. Plus at&t has stated that by the end of the year they might be able to double the bandwidth, sure most will go to the TV bandwidth but I don't see what would keep them from giving 10/1 service.

Lets see...
3 TV's on DirecTv 'plus' = $58/month
at&t unlimited local + long distance + wireless (2 lines) = $112/month
DSL Extreme = $26/month
Total = $196 including all fees
================================
Uverse 300 bundle = $94 / month + taxes
at&t unlimited local + long distance + wireless (2 lines) = $112/month
Total = $206/month (+ uverse fees)

In the whole purpose of statewide franchising AT&T is pushing is so that MORE company's can service an area? If statewide franchising passes in my state why COULDN'T Verizon come in? Since I'm stuck with AT&T I guess I'll have to move to get FIOS then. Funny how Verizon can provide me cell service but somehow are prevented from providing FIOS.

They could provide service, if they thought they could make a profit at it. But they would have to consider how much business they could steal from the entrenched local telco and local cable and then consider the costs of building infrastructure from scratch. Most times, they couldn't get enough customers to make a profit.

Not sure but Cox is overbuilding in some of the newer housing dev. in the TWC area here in the City of San Diego. So I am assuming it covers all telcom companies and not just the telcos.

This also means that no money for local franchise which cable has to pay. local franchise means you service the whole local area. Statewide or the state franchise means you can pick and chose the areas that you want to service. AT&T plans only to go into the expensive neighborhoods because the rich will pay and like things that are always advertised cheaper. You get what you pay for.

That statement is completely false. AT&T has some of the most advanced facilities in poor neighborhoods because the "sell rate" is highest in those areas.

No Thanks

I'll Stick to a company who doesn't sell my information or freely hands it over to the government. Call me archaic but I like having privacy. God knows ATT doesn't know the meaning of that one... Anyone using ATT should realize your information is data mined. Your browsing habits.... You phone records... All data mined by the NSA and the Government. Why does that worry me? Well call me practical, but who knows who sees that data and how it's used. How would you like your next job to include:

So John Smith:

We did a background check and got your Browsing records:

I see you've looked up Male on Male porn or Lesbian Porn. That type of behavior isn't wanted in our company.

Or More practical. I see you typically buy from Newegg or Tiger Direct.. etc... You wish to work for our company but do not use our services? How can we trust you will be a loyal employee..

Sound far fetched? I don't think so... Whenever data is collected or mind, prying eyes get to see it and you are at the mercy of the people on the other end. Just as you go out to eat and hope your waitress doesn't rip off your credit card number, you are at the Gov's mercy they arent using that data / selling it...Once again, say what you want, but I tend to avoid companies I know blatantly take my privacy and good will for granted.

Can't do anything? You are a very sorry American.. No I'm not trying to be insulting but its TRUE. You sure can do something. You write your elected officials. You vote people who will support changing the tide. You demand that elected officials are accountable. You can do plenty. Obviously, this country is going to hell in a handbasket though because of people like you... who think they cant change anything. Tell that to Gandi and Martin Luther King.... They were individuals who changed a lot.

Yup, when i first was told by a friend that read it on the LA Times, i instantly went online to check for reliability but theres wasn't any on the 90011 area :'(!! But i still hope that it will be here soon. I might just ask a AT&T tech one of these days. I mean theres a base where I see them coming out like 3 blocks away from my home. Ill just wait outisde until someone comes out xDD!! lol! Then i'll ask him/her when will they begin wiring fiber in SC LA. =]! Hahaha, but I'm pretty positively sure I will move my regular ADSL and Satellite with at&t to the u-verse service once it gets deploy here in SC LA.

AT&T Uverse inside info

Checking in from Santa Clarita. My girlfriend currently sells AT&T at a local mall, and its getting installed today. We got the U300 package + elite DSL, and its about 100 and change a month + 2 months free, and free HD line-up for 12 months + free HBO for 2 months.

Thats a hell of a deal, and all the nay-sayers can bite me: FiOS wasn't available in our area, and all that was left was either satellite or cable. I did a few tests on the cable internet in our complex (through...ahem...wireless) and was getting about 5.8 mb down/.8 mb up, during the middle of the day on a Friday. By 6pm, it was down to about 1.5 mb down, and 200 kb up.

As for the TV package, It pretty much covers everything but HBO, and thats free for awhile, and we can pay for it when we want it. The free router and 2x free DVR boxes on top of that, plus a 50 dollar service install thats refunded through a 50 dollar visa card. Its win, win, win.

From her connections through AT&T (they contract out her company) - I hear the DL/UL speed is going to get boosted within the year. They are LOSING money at the moment on the installation and TV services.
