AT&T Launching New 7.2 Mbps 3G Modem
Available November 22, free after $100 rebate...
by Karl Bode Monday 09-Nov-2009 tags: business · wireless · hardware
AT&T is of course starting to deploy faster HSPA 7.2 upgrades, which nudge AT&T's downstream 3G network speed closer to 7.2 Mbps . Not that you'll actually see those kinds of speeds in the real world, but it's a decent improvement. Still, before you can see those faster speeds on your laptop, you'll need a new modem. To that end, AT&T says the new AT&T USBConnect Lightning from Sierra Wireless will be made available starting November 22. It's free after a $100 mail-in rebate -- and assuming you subscribe to a DataConnect Plan of at least $35 a month. AT&T says they'll have 25 of the nation’s 30 largest markets wired with HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2010, and 90% of their footprint upgraded by the end of 2011.

Update: AT&T clarifies to us that there are some folks who won't need a new modem -- mainly those who use The Mercury tethered.

7.2 devices have been out for awhile

My AT&T/Sierra USBConnect 881, which I got a year and a half ago, is 7.2 capable. It doesn't do 5.76 Mbps HSPA uploads, but 7.2 is definitely there.

Re: 7.2 devices have been out for awhile

That's what I thought. I remember when I got my 875U Refurb a couple of years ago that the U881 was out with faster speeds.

Even the 881U was discontinued Oct of 2008.

The 881U is good for 7200/2000 according to Sierra Wireless.

That means you'd hit the cap faster

At 7.2 Mbps (.9 MB), you'd hit the 5 GB cap in and hour and a half.

5gb limit

I've hit 35 gb before in a month a few times with no overage charges. Perhaps it is because I am on a small business plan. AT&T customer service told me the 5gb limit is only in place to prevent downloads of movies or running servers and when you hit the 5gb limit you will receive a message stating so. AT&T also said after the 5gb limit they will decide whether to continue to provide service for the month, but I would not get charged extra. I've never received a message or had service interruption. Happy downloading :0)
