AT&T: MMS For iPhone Coming September 25
Next up: waiting for tethering support
by Karl Bode Thursday 03-Sep-2009 tags: business · wireless
Just as people were starting to notice that AT&T was getting very close to their end of summer deadline for offering MMS functionality on the iPhone, AT&T e-mails us to note they'll be launching the feature on September 25. That's technically three days late, but we're sure you'll let it slide.

"It was important to give our customers a positive experience from day one," AT&T spokesman Seth Bloom tells us. "We support more iPhone customers than any other carrier in the world so we took the time necessary to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic," the company says.

At launch, 29 global carriers not named AT&T were ready to support MMS, but AT&T was a no show, likely because of the systems integration issues posed by their acquisition of BellSouth. Back in June, AT&T told us the delays were due to a "systems issue," and not a network capacity issue. Their statement would now seem to indicate it was both a network and systems issue.

AT&T took a beating for being late, and the company has been sued twice by customers complaining that Apple and AT&T promoted the capability in press reports, TV spots and on their website -- but failed to deliver the goods. AT&T has consistently stated that MMS support would drop, to quote a certain Don Henley, before the boys of summer had gone.

According to AT&T, the functionality will be available via an iTunes update when it drops later this month. Next up? Waiting for iPhone tethering functionality. That may be a longer wait, given the congestion issues many customers still face in a number of markets, despite AT&T's continued assurances they're upgrading backhaul and tower capacity as quickly as possible.

It's included in the iPhone texting plan, no extra cost. That part was announced a while ago.

my point being the compass isn't anything new. The G1 and MyTouch3g/Magic both have compasses, and were out months earlier.

Ummm.. you TOOK "the ability to tether" on your own, it's not like you were given it. Semptember 9th you'll get a 3.1 software update which will include the functions of Blue Tooth file transfers, ability to use the voice command via a push of a blue tooth headset, and MMS... Sorry, your jailbroken phone will have to go back to jail if you want the new feature.

Wait for it...

I'm betting that MMS traffic does indeed skyrocket on the 25th or so...and I'll bet that AT&T's network turns on EPIC FAIL mode as a result. $10 says there will be serious capacity issues for the week or two after MMS is released.

Still to late

MMS support can be obtained with a simple config file sent to your iphone in ITunes. Took around a whole 10 minutes.

I wish I could get away with lies and cheating people like them.

Exclusivity?

"We support more iPhone customers than any other carrier in the world ..."

I thought they're the only one supporting iPhones, at least legitimately (with Apple's blessing)? Wouldn't anyone with an unlocked iPhone on any other network be outside of support just because of that and so whatever they got from riding a non-ATT network wouldn't be subject to supporting any iPhone features?

AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States, however, international carriers have agreements with Apple to carry the iPhone on their network.

Did you even read what you quoted? ... "in the world".... there are other carries than ATT that have the iPhone.. and the statement, as you quoted, is correct. I take what they are saying that the U.S. has more iPhone users than the rest of the world, thus, they support more iPhone users than any other carrier in the world. ... don't you think?

Nope: There's MANY carriers around the world using the iPhone. I suspect that this was one of the reasons that Apple has stuck to GSM based iPhone vs. CDMA2000 based. The global GSM base is nearly 4 billion users, and growing rapidly. The CDMA2000 (1x/EVDO) base is nearly 500 million, and not really increasing.

Australia's CDMA2000 carriers have gone to GSM/HSPA, Canada's CDMA2000 will be deploying 3g UMTS/HSPA nationwide next month.

Read the quote, "In the world..." iPhones are available all over the world...not just the United States. I have no problem believing that AT&T supports more iPhones than the carriers in other countries do.

I suspect that it will be short lived.
China Unicom has announced that it will be the vendor for the iPhone in China. They purchased 5 million units for selling, before the network is open.

Fortunately, China Unicom is the 'smaller' company, and has only 141 million subscribers, vs 301 million in China Mobile

Can someone

please explain to me, in layman's terms, why MMS works on all other phones that are MMS capable on the AT&T network, but the iPhone had problems.

Is it technology related?

Is it capacity related?

Is it just AT&T being AT&T?

It is entirely capacity related.

Phones have been shipping with cameras for years, but the iPhone has become the #1 camera phone uploading pictures to Flickr.

Phones have also been shipping with video recording capability, but it didn't take long for the iPhone to become the #1 camera phone uploading videos to YouTube.

This has been Apple's standard procedure since the beginning - they usually aren't the first with a technology, but they are the first to really popularize it.

MMS is used by many people on many different handsets, but you can count on the iPhone being a huge strain on AT&T's network simply because more iPhone users will use it than those with other phones.

It sucks, and it's becoming increasingly clear (as if it hadn't been already) that the iPhone needs to be offered on more than one carrier. AT&T is just not enough to handle the load.

I'm not saying the situation would be any better if Apple had an exclusivity agreement with Verizon; in fact, I bet we would be in the same situation.

What would help the situation, however, is the offer the iPhone on as many carriers as possible. Apple has to spread the load.

Re: Can someone

But as others have said, in lieu of MMS people have been using other methods to post videos and pictures. I don't see where the added network strain would come from. Those that were already uploading via a different method might continue to do so, so that many more people can see their content, while some of that will shift over to MMS for privacy, but I don't see a HUGE jump to MMS.

The downside

Well - in order to take advantage of the NEW MMS functionality, we will have to install the iPhone software update - suprisingly due out at the same time.

The JOY of this update is it closes the loophole that allowed the iPhone to be used as a tether with the unlimited/no cap iPhone data plan.

Included in this update will be fixes to stop the trend of "jailbreaking" the iPhones. I suppose it wont take long till the creative folks out there get around the upgrade....

I doubt anyone cares, but people need to learn something...

I don't get why, so many people RIP on AT&T just because oh wait, bad reputation. Once they hear AT&T its "ewwwwww". Why? I happen to like how this company runs, it has way more freedom then Verizon in my eyes. I know people get mad at AT&T not being able to preform the way it should be, or crippled stuff, or mms/tethering being delayed, but if a company decided to go that route... maybe its for the best?

I know that the iPhone surge was way way to fast for AT&T to handle, and I don't care what anyone says I believe it. This would have been the same/ or worse if Verizon or any other US telco started out with it. Now, people who say AT&T cripples the iPhone so much, let me ask you one question... How do you think it would have looked on Verizon? Verizon just now has to put Wifi in the blackberry's because its REQUIRED not because they changed there mind... imagine no wifi.. what else? Anyone answer that question please??

Oh wait, and the recent data price up on Verizon, sickened me.... So why do you think this phone would do any better on Verizon, or Sprint, or T-mobile. This phone is a beast on DATA, not like other phones. So I hope people realize what I am trying to say, but honestly If no buddy wants to listen to what I say that's cool with me too.

One more thing, The call Dropping/ Quality.. on the iPhone problems I hear a lot. I am not saying AT&T has no part in this problem, but I think Apple has some issue in there end, I will sit next to my cousin with a iPhone and I have AT&T on my Blackberry Bold and my quality just KILLS his.

K I am finished.

Ya know no one yelled at apple nearly as much as AT&T when apple said (on the first two Iphones I believe) the same thing.
