The UK certainly does subsidise phones, but there is nothing stopping you just getting a SIM card and buying a SIM-free phone. Most people get subsidised phones. It is also generally no problem to unlock most phones (the iPhone was an exception, and it still isn't fully unlockable now) - just request a code from the network or do it yourself.
Apple even made their phone exclusive to one network (the worst one), but fortunately the US-style business model isn't creeping further into our industry.

I wonder about people's mental stability who are in love with the iPhone and are in love with Verizon. It's just a crappy phone and another crappy carrier. Get over it.

while not quite a corporate discount -- i have att service for my work line. if v* gets the iphone, so be it. i will be sticking with att (in fact, i'll be purchasing the new iphone 4 outright when it drops) for quite some time. in fact, i've never had any real problems with my iphone (except for on the arizona state university campus -- much smaller than your typical campus with an insane population density) and my att usb-connect device blows my sprint evdo rev. a card out of the water.
i'm happy with att. couple that with corporate picking up my monthly bill (pooled minutes, unlimited data, unlimited text) and i'm sold. as long as teh steve keeps making hardware for att, they've got me by the balls...

| Re: they've got me... Apple will most likely pick one company and the one that pay the most $$$ and gives them control over the phone and everything else. That is why VZ didn't sign to start off with. They wanted too much for the phone and then control over which store customers could get their Apps from. VZ doesn't believe in giving them their cake and allowing them to eat it as well. They want something and they'll want the store. T just doesn't care and will pay anything to keep those customers hostage.
VZ is also doing much better than ATT in terms of using the Andriod OS than T is doing with iPhone at least then they can claim they allow "open source" devices on their network. -- www.twopugsbrand.com Kosher, Vegan, and Organic Certified Dog and Cat treats/foods and other products!

They think they are going to keep me for 4 bucks a month? 1 edit | ATT, you really are full of yourselves. I had att back in 2003, right about the time they were really pushing their gsm network over their tdma network. So I switched to their amazing gsm network (I had 0 issues with their tdma, it was EXCELLENT) and back then, they were the only service provider that could drop a call with a full signal. They were the only service provider that would not complete a call with a full signal. They were the only service provider where you consistently missed calls because the callers went straight to voicemail. After switching my phone out for a few different models, I determined it was the company and not the phone.
Sad to say, I am sitting here 7 years later, and all my sucker friends that went ATT over the iPhone and rollover minute buzz are ALL regretting it. These people are in MI, OH, NC to name a few states. And their service still does EVERYTHING it did 7 years ago when I had it. A few are holding out until their contract ends, while others are paying the termination fee to go to Sprint or Verizon. RIDICULOUS ATT, JUST RIDICULOUS! Get your heads out of your asses and fix your damn network. Then you *Might* be saved from the fires of hell.

NeosumPremium join:2000-06-03 Oakland, CA 2 edits | not for everyone ATT service may be horrible for what it seems to be most of the people complaining and posting on internet blogs and forums. There are few who do not have problems with the service though. I for one am a satisfied customer and do not experience all of the problems I read about almost on a daily basis. They'll probably get some defections but I doubt it'll be huge. The majority of the people who would buy a verizon iphone are probably already verizon customers who refused to switch to att.

| | AT&T may lose IPhone If this is truly AT&T's attitude, it's not surprising. They didn't start making changes to their landline business until the competition got stronger, and started making inroads into AT&T's core business. I think De La Vega is in for a surprise, and AT&T will get what they deserve. They don't own the cell phone business like they did landline business, and cell users are more inclined to dump their carrier over real or imagined faults. I have an IPhone, and if Verizon gets it, I'm gone. I'll put up with the delays just to change. AT&Ts 3G is nothing to write home about. The pasture may not be a lot greener, but a shade or two is better than what I have now. | |

| Re: Verizon Voice over Data Heh. As a Verizon user for several years, I'll admit to having been cynical when I first saw this claim on AT&Ts ads during the recent flame war between the two.
However, I have since seen that it actually does make a big difference: e.g. I have a Blkbry and I use the Messenger app; when I'm on a call, no messages get in or out on it. Which can be a pain if I or someone I'm contacting are on a long call...
Anyway, I'd also like to say that people need to realize that now that Verizon has all these Android phones, well, guess what? Network's getting saturated! Shock, horror.
It's not a bottomless well in any case, people. And you've really got to stop assuming these companies are actually in it to piss you off. That's not a business strategy, and quite frankly it's rather small-minded to presume that. -- I'm Kreig Zimmerman. Any questions?
