AT&T Nabs LTE Windows Phone Exclusives
Unveils Growing Lineup of LTE Devices at CES
by Karl Bode Tuesday 10-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · AT&T · wireless
On the heels of unveiling eleven new LTE launch markets including New York City, AT&T is taking the wraps off of a slew of new LTE-capable devices. As had been rumored, AT&T's getting first dibs on the first round of LTE-capable Windows Phone devices, announcing that they'll exclusively offer the new HTC Titan II (and its sixteen megapixel camera) and the Nokia Lumia 900 Ace. AT&T's CES announcements included five new LTE smartphones and one tablet. The smartphones include the Samsung Galaxy S II, Skyrocket HD, Samsung Exhilarate, Pantech Element and Sony Xperia ion. If these smartphones (several of which have New Jersey-sized screen real estate) aren't enough, AT&T's new tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Note, which AT&T profiles in a video here.

Android users became what they hated so much about iOS .............. loud mouth asshats.
/If WP push Android and iOS to do better things why hate on it

Ever try one, why all the hate? Win7 phones are viable competition to both Apple & android, and having more choices is better for consumers. No?

Re: Hmm

Ninja please...

Windows had Smartphones LOCKED from 2003 to 2007/8... they had the best OS, most features blah blah blah...

And the morons woke up about a year ago from a nap that started in 2007/8 and went "whoa... what happened to the party? Everyone left?"

Yes MS... everyone bailed and went to work the next morning as they were supposed to and kept working on new stuff like iOS and Android ... you remember right? You were hungry that day because THEY ATE YOUR LUNCH!

I was "Pocket PC Phone Edition" right from the start and for many years after that... and wanted it to stay that way. You idiots gave it away... asleep on the job.

My Galaxy Nexus is not perfect but it KICK A$$ on ANYTHING Windows Mobile and so did my Incredible before it. You blew it MS... we moved on, get over it.

(careful... If I get wound up I'll tell you what I really think )

But IIRC Palm had the sales race locked up with the Treos running PalmOS. And when you added in all the Palm PDA's they had the Smartphone/PDA LOCKED UP.

Win Mobile was nothing special - garbage Windows UI and nastiness (registry, etc) ported to the small screen. And with it's unreliableness to boot. A coworker during that time had many and none were "reliable".

Re: Hmm

ROFLMAO

I owned both... a Treo 180, then a 360... I got rid of those pieces of crap for a Compaq 3650 and a data cable to my Nokia candy bar until the Samsung i700 came out. Trying to comparing ANYTHING Treo back then to WinMo is a joke.

Maybe he's turned off by the nasty UI? The ineffective use of small screen real estate with those nasty tiles? Or the unknown way of finding apps? (Do you scroll the tiles up, down, how?)

And more choice is not necessarily better for consumers. Doesn't result in low prices (see gas stations and grocery stores where they are all close in price) nor does it guarantee better service. It only makes us feel better like we have "Choice".

VZW drops the ball again

I'm pissed that VZW isn't getting anything while I try to make this broken Trophy last. Picked it up used last summer, even with dirt under the screen and no accelerometer I would never go back to Android. Talk about a cobbled together fugly mess. And not likely to switch to iPhone, though I've considered it, but no native Zune Pass support and the overall awesomeness of WP7 have held me back so far. Probably going to use my last NE2 tomorrow on a new replacement Trophy.

How about that LTE Coverage First?

How about some more LTE coverage AT&T?

Your LTE network covers a little over 1/10 as many cities as Verizon's does.

Re: How about that LTE Coverage First?

The alternative is just don't leave your house if you really need internet 24/7.

From a carriers perspective:

LTE = urban
HSPA= suburban
EDGE= rual
GSM/GPRS = worldwide

Lets not forget wifi at every McDonalds too. So.... Yea... Sign me up for that 2 year contract so I can brag about having an LTE phone. Sweeeeet

Eventually, its gonna be LTE = mostly everywhere.

Yes I said mostly, but eventually AT&T will have to expand coverage to compete with VZW's LTE coverage, and maybe hopefully Sprint's.

I don't see Verizon shutting down 1xrtt anytime soon.

I would guess:

LTE = urban
EVDO = suburban
1xrtt = rual

Re: How about that LTE Coverage First?

They won't until Voice over LTE (or similar tech) is perfected. So I mean 5-10 years by 'Eventually'.

Also, by your previous post, yes, LTE for now is bragging rights, (like smartphones were 5 years ago).

In my book it does to! By the way I am in a very rural place in southeast Ohio and Verizon stood up a tower last year in my township and I have EVDO.

Lte costs less. Everywhere will eventually have lte.

What will happen with rural areas is probably an lte tower with t1s while other areas have fiber...

If you had been paying attention, you'd notice that ATT is rolling out new markets very quickly and in most markets the down throughput is much faster than what Verizon is providing. I believe ATT launched 3 or 4 new markets in December and the same amount in November. We're talking about flipping the switch on a brand new wireless network in a whole major city.

You goobers bitch about the LTE rollout speed without any clue of the complexity of deploying a new network with all new equipment that also has to be able to seamlessly fall back to 3G. Seriously, do you have any idea how complex an LTE network is under the hood?

Verizon started first, they're slower and they've had multiple issues with their LTE network failing already. You'd think people would be more appreciative of ATT planning a bit more and (so far) providing a more stable and faster LTE product.

Bitching about the rollout speed of ATT just seems moronic to me. Bitch about something else like their billing practices.

Re: How about that LTE Coverage First?

Verizon's LTE is not slower. It has more users. at&t's LTE is pretty much unused right now, so it seems like it runs faster. Let's see those speeds on a loaded network similar to Verizon.

Yawn, AT&T and Windows Phone are in the same boat in that people will appear out of thin air to bash them inside and out even if they've never used them. With the way people gripe about 3G you'd think that it's like using a 14.4 dial up modem. Yes, LTE is the way of the future and carriers should be actively deploying it now but 3G is still a very capable and adequate technology.

iPhones, android phone, whatever

I've done iPhones, and now an android. My Samsung infuse is a piece of crap. My daughter's HTC inspire was uninspiring. Why not windows? What phone and it's UI isn't without some ball and chain? I suppose in all fairness I do like the freedom of an android phone coming from the iPhone world. But IMHO, android OS is just another case of too many chefs. Very little quality control for all the free apps. I had to strip off all the crapware and stay away from all the tempting stuff out there. I'm ready for something completely different.

I got an Infuse the week they came out and it's been flawless, I can't think of a single thing to complain about except the lack of updates to a newer Android OS (which can be said for any Android phone).

Quality control on "free" apps? You must be kidding. You sound like one of those people that complain about everything. Unlike iOS, Android apps have to deal with a massive array of different devices. I can't think of any game or free app of the day (amazon) that I've tried and has failed to work.

Re: iPhones, android phone, whatever

Wow! Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed. Just because you got a "flawless" Infuse doesn't mean that "flawed" Infuses don't exist. Maybe we need to define "flawed" or "crap". How about being on my second Infuse which is a refurb that constantly crashes, locks up when using gpsr, or occasionally goes dark with only a vibrate warning pulse? Strangest behavior in a phone I've ever seen. I've come very close to taking the SIM out and going back to my old iPhone.

I complain about everything? Listen to you - complaining about people who complain. I pay $200 for a phone that I'm locked in to a 2 year contract - I expected more. Silly me.

AT&T 4G

AT&T 4G hspa+ and LTE will beat any competitor because of coverage. Seems like they let verizon make mistakes then conquered them. lol

whoa? have you even bothered looking at a recent coverage map? Its not even close. ATT is hundreds of thousands of square miles behind.

Just because you want it to be true doesn't mean it is.

"Exclusive" means nothing in the USA.

Since Verizon and Sprint must have different models from AT&T because they are on the old CDMA stuff, it is very easy for AT&T to negotiate "exclusive" contracts with any vendor for the USA market since that particulat model will only be "banned" from T-Mobile.

Verizon and Sprint will get nearly identical models with a different name or model number which will be CDMA-LTE instead of GSM-LTE.

This is very similar to the HTC market. Nearly every network claims a "exclusive" but that is jyst because HTC makes different models for different networks.

imagine

with all the problems we've seen with privacy on Android phones... I doubt Windows 7 could be much more secure.. ?

seriously, have you seen all the security patches microsoft as for Windows 7 O/S lately?

right now these phones aren't really competing on price either and can not really be found for pre-paid service.. these are non-starters with at least 70% of wireless customers. also, phones with such fancy featuers such as a 16mp camera are going to be pricy ($300-$600 range) so you might as well write off the first two generations until prices come out of the stratosphere.. for such whiz-bang technolgy.

How many windows phone bashers have actually tried it?

Seems like everyone bashing windows phone has never even owned one or tried one. Seems to me that many windows phone users are very satisfied with their purchase.

Typically ignorance and fanboism when you criticize something you haven't even tried yet.
