AT&T Offers $40 HBO, Broadband Bundle With Amazon Prime

DSLReports regular Darknessfall See Profile directs our attention to the fact that AT&T is running a new promotion for U-Verse customers that offers users broadband, HBO, and a year of Amazon Prime for $40 per month. Like Comcast, Verizon and others, AT&T has been offering a $40 broadband, HBO and limited TV bundle the hopes of appealing to (almost) cord cutters.

Click for full size
AT&T started offering that bundle back in April, though the monthly price jumped to a far-less-sexy $70-$80 a month after the promotional period ended.

AT&T's latest promotion, spotted first by our users, adds a year of Amazon Prime to that mix, and comes on the heels of AT&T's exclusive partnership with Amazon for the Amazon Fire Phone. Here's the specifics from the promotion e-mail AT&T is sending to customers:

quote:
"For customers purchasing $39 U-verse bundle with 1-year term online at att.com. Online activation through Amazon required. Redemption email with fulfillment instructions will be emailed to customers after installation of qualifying U-verse services. If an existing Prime member, the included year will be added to the end of your existing subscription. Offer ends December 13, 2014."
As it stands now, AT&T's HBO and broadband bundle includes their U-Basic TV package and their Max Plus (18 Mbps) broadband tier. Under the previous promotion you could add Max Turbo (24 Mbps) for a promotional price of $49 per month, and Power (45 Mbps) for a one year promotional price of $59 per month. It appears at first glimpse that the same structure would apply here, the only difference obviously being the year of free Amazon Prime (which of course nets you access to Amazon's growing streaming video catalog).

These offerings still tend to get pricey when promotional periods end, but it's still nice to see companies experimenting with lower-cost, more flexible options for users that simply aren't interested in traditional bloated TV bundles.

Options are nice

It's great that we're starting to see these types of options for cord cutters.

I just priced it online and they included basic tv for free for 12 months (locals only no HD) with 1 non-dvr included. I wouldn't be using the TV service anyway, get Amazon prime, internet is also discounted and I can use HBO-go so it seems like a good deal. After a year I could just cancel when they raise rates unless they want to re-up me for another year.

Time to see what my cable companies are offering

Re: Options are nice

And how much for the STB which I'm sure is required for the basic TV. No HD? This is 2014 that should be standard. Not to mention in many places like my area they offer "U-Verse" internet but not U-Verse TV. S even if I wanted to take up this deal I couldn't. Some people in my area can only get 768 kbps "U-Verse" really? 768 kbps fiber huh? Good thing most of them can get cable internet.

If 768 Kbps is the fastest U-verse available, then that area is not served by AT&T's "GigaPower" FTTP service (yet), but just by DSL via copper loop, and in this particular case, likely with a long loop length.

yea except before At&t "upgraded" the area to U-Verse these same people could get 3 Mbps DSL. Explain that.

"yet"? are you saying they have grand plans to roll out widespread FTTP in this millennium?

1 non-dvr stb was included. I tried adding additional and it added $8/month. HD was an additional $10/month (I agree they should include this). Highest speed I could order in my area was the 18mbps.

Re: Options are nice

My address I can 12 Mbps. I think. Initially the site says I can only get 6 Mbps maximum when I enter my address, but if I actually try to order there is an option for 12 Mbps. Nice away to get potential customers to NOT order telling then they can get less speed than they actually can.

Not HBOGo so it's a no go

Still requires a TV subscription so it's not really $40.

Re: Not HBOGo so it's a no go

yeah.
how about posting the 'out the door' price.
that'll be at least $20 more/mo after the unfees and other below the line items are tacked on.

Doubt it. Seeing as my area only offer "u-verse" internet and not u-verse TV. I am not able to take them up on this deal. It sucks. Now if they had offered up just the internet, HBO GO and Amazon Prime for $40 they may have had something.

"No, it includes the TV subscription."

I followed the link to ATT.com and found the corresponding teaser offer for $39/month.

When I logged-in to my account, no such option was available. The offer also states that the activation fee will be waived if I signed-up online.

Called customer service and showed them the link from DslReports to ATT and the offer for $39/month. I was quoted $82/month. The CS Rep stated that I need to go to Amazon Prime to get the $39/month offer.

This appears to be a "Bait-and-Switch" scheme.

I don't believe they've been enforcing that cap for U-Verse users.

Still need TV....

Plus, it is a promotion for 1 year. After that, price for TV and Broadband is going to go up, in hopes you stick around. I'm not biting. And cord cutters also want to watch their television wherever they are, not just on the STB in the living room.

Besides, why would I want to give up my 100 Mbps internet connection for 18 Mbps?

Beside The Fact I Can't Get U-verse...

I wouldn't have an "at&t" broadband product if my life depended upon it. Fool me once... Not going to give the thing that goes by the name "at&t" the chance to make it my fault.

$40 per month, not $40 per year

"offers users broadband, HBO, and a year of Amazon Prime for $40 for one year"

Sloppy language: it's $40/month not $40/year.

Re: $40 per month, not $40 per year

It's implying--maybe not clearly--it's $40/mo for a year. Sure it could be cleaner, but regulars know these promos are usually tiered for the first year and the 2nd year they really ratchet up the price. It's some sort of stupid game they play, and the quants must have figured out long ago...

It is what it is, not what it's not

I wouldn't want the slow internet speed, or, for that matter, the HBO and TV. But some people have different needs, so really people, it's not fair to judge this by what it's not. No, it's not HD. No, it's not higher speed internet. No, it's not 1 gb fiber.

But it's still a pretty good deal with included Amazon Prime (worth about $8/month, normally solid internet connection, I think, plus basic TV and HBO.

Instead of bitching about what it doesn't have, how about comparing it to something else in that price range that you think is a better deal.

In my area, I've got Astound 55 mbps for $30/month, no HBO, no Amazon Prime. If someone doesn't need higher speeds, then AT&T's deal looks pretty good. Comcast wanted to charge me well over $50 for just basic internet at 28 mbps.
