Blame game being played in Connecticut
(old news - 11:27AM Wednesday Nov 19 2008)
tags: business · telco · consumers
AT&T and the State of Connecticut haven't exactly been getting along. The State has angered the powerful telco by requiring AT&T U-Verse adhere to cable franchise law (a fight AT&T won), requiring AT&T grant homeowner consent before plunking bulky U-Verse VRADs down in front of customer homes, and via CT Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's ongoing investigation into poor AT&T customer service in the state. AT&T's troubles in CT continued this week, with local unions noting the telco has laid off 1,000 employees in the state in the last ten years. Local news outlets quote unions who blame AT&T for under-staffed support. AT&T first denies there's any problems, then says that were there problems, it's probably because union workers won't work weekends.

Comcast & state not issue; Blumenthal desire for limelight..

.. is the main issue.

This is just another state Attorney General that aspires to higher office trying to get his name in the limelight whenever possible, in the manner of Elliot Spitzer from NY.

I don't know why the Liberal Publication matters that you are quoting. Dickie Blumenthal is a very liberal Democrat.

Wont work weekends?

Did they realy just use that as an excuse? Wow AT&T ya ever think the people your paying might want/have a life outside of work? Might want to be able to enjoy that paycheck?

On a seperate note, all calls are answered within 10 seconds...by a computer. Well geeze if thats the new standard of service, then i guess im available 24/7 since my voicemail answers all MY customers calls withing 10 seconds too!

There is nothing to say that you can not have a Tuesday to Saturday and/or Sunday to Thursday work week. That way the worker gets some weekdays off and the company gets weekend coverage. I am sure that some workers would be willing to trade weekend work for free weekday time. When I worked in a 24/7 Computer Center that was the way we were scheduled.

I recently worked a Saturday in trade for a Monday off rather recently. So I don't think the union weekend thing holds water. Some of us don't mind working weekends to get days off in the week.

but perhaps the contract says extra pay on weekends and thats why no one does it as maybe at&t is requiring a weekday off for the weekend, thus screwing the weekend pay

Normally a contract does not say weekend time but Overtime and Off-Shift time.

IOW: If my NORMAL Shift (work week) is Sunday to Thursday, I do not get extra for the Sunday but would if I had to work a Friday after working the prior Sunday to Thursday. Weekend time is OVERTIME although there can be provisions for "Time Off in Exchange". The basic idea is that if I have a 35 hour week then working more than 35 Hours in a week is overtime and thus gets a bonus pay rate.

I don't think that's it, because this center is staffed 7 days a week. We are not a 24 hour center, but we are a 7 day a week center. I think latest on sunday is 8 P.M. central time for phone calls I think. After that I keep thinking the CA center gets them till 10p pacific time.

It's something crazy like that.

really?
so millions of us att customers should just listen to the computer voice thingy on the weekends coz some unionized workers want to have a life?! my humble suggestion to the union worker - get an education and get a better job for a better life...now if you have issues getting quality education that's a separate issue...but when it comes to the "customer service" job, weekends is just the nature of the business. Sorry.

1,000 in 10 years?!?!

1,000 people in 10years is not a big number. I'm not sure why they think that but it could be a lot worse. Look at the Automakers and see how many they havent laid off within the last two years. It's more than over a 1,000. But then again thats why the Union Employees at GM now get a base rate starting at $14.50 an hour and not their old $35.

I guess I have to thank the mob for my benefits.
Somebody has to because down here in South Florida the company-AT&T has implemented non-union workers to work inside-pass the interphase. Since these workers are non-union the company pays them about half of what we make, force them to work on their off days, AND worse the company is FIRING them on the spot for any positive comments made about the union. The mob controlled union down here(in the original 9 state Bellsouth region) turned down the premise tech because the company wanted them to work on the plant as well. Premise techs work on the Re-Verse(U-Verse) and they work inside doing from inside wire work to television programming. So thanks again to the mob controlled unions, thanks for fighting for the little guy.

Re: Mob controlled unions

You ever notice how only the union people and their spouses are pro-union? In New York, if you dare do any electrical work and are not part of a union, the union cronies will harass and attack you until you either stop working, move to another part of the country, or just stop living altogether. There's a reason construction costs 3x as much in New York than in the rest of the country.

Every time I speak anti-union, I always get some blowhard going off about "well, if it werent for unions, you wouldn't get overtime, benefits" and so on. Unions did serve a good purpose at one time, and in certain industries they are still highly valuable (mining being the most apparent), but for the most part, they command outrageous salaries and perks for which the non-union customers (read: most of New York City) are stuck with the bill.

Try holding a convention or event in a hotel in New York City. With one exception, every hotel is unioned out the wazoo. Want to plug in your own lamp? Don't even think about it! You're required to pay an electrician to be on staff the entire length of the event if you want to, usually at 200-300 bucks an hour. Between that and the fact that the Javits Center is a joke is a good reason why New York loses out on TONS of convention business.

And no, dont feed me this bullshit that New York can charge the highest prices because "they're the best city in the world". New Yorkers and starry-eyed dreamers have been shoving that shit up my hole for years, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that IT AIN'T TRUE. I also love that New York is called "the city that never sleeps". The place is DESOLATE at 2-4 in the morning. Las Vegas is truly the city that never sleeps.

You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you.

@bellsouth.net

Question: Did the unions make poor management decisions?
Did they "cook the books"? Did they decide to nix the electric car-saying it was a bad decision-or make guzzlers? No wait, maybe unions have multi layers of mis-management? NO, NO, and NO!!! Don't be fooled by the rhetoric of union salaries, gold-plated health insurance, and high pensions. No doubt that insurance has gotten way out of hand. What's the solution? That's debatable. The solution would help companies small and large with costs. Ever wondered how foreign car makers do it? THEY ALL HAVE national health care programs!!! Yes, the Japanese, Koreans, Germans, etc.....Look it up, that's a big step in the right direction. Oh and building a QUALITY product would also help!!!!

BS. GM and Ford kept building bigger and bigger cars. While competitors like Toyota and Honda were innovating. The dinosaur companies deserve bankruptcy.

Its not the unions fault the CEO's at GM and Ford wanted to build Crappy cars.

Re: Mob controlled unions

AMEN to that!!!
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Seadone1

@bellsouth.net

Let me try to explain it this way. First, do not ASS-U-ME ALL mob controlled Union members are lazy and worthless. It is true that some are, but I guess you've never seen any worthless and lazy employees in non-union jobs. What IS happening NOW HERE TODAY in AT&T Southeast is that the non-union techs are being exploited. They are being overworked and underpaid. And like I said before, maybe it didn't register the first time, is that any semblance of positive union speak and you are fired! NO RECOURSE!! Nothing lazy you dumb ass!!! DO NOT INSULT ME-I am far from lazy.
DO NOT ASS-U-ME!!!!
P.S.-It's a good thing CEO's don't just sit around and....

Re: Mob controlled unions

i see your argument...but i wont stretch it that far as a battle between CEOs of big businesses VS the unions. both sides have pros and cons. while i dont see why the auto CEOs make millions for bad decisions, I also dont see why on average auto union workers get 80+ an hour when most college grads with business degrees with years of auto industry experience don't make that much....
its a whacky problem on both ends...
dont tell me one is more bad than the other
unions get you good stuff but when they over squeeze – auto businesses just cant make good quality products in economically viable plants....what happens is no matter what decisions a CEO takes he is screwed by the competition.

Heh, dont you know that the unions are anti-FiOS? It takes an average of one union crony per line to support FiOS, whereas it took 4 union cronies per line to support copper.

Wrong. AT&T had business interests in CT long before Bell Atlantic and GTE ever got together to form Verizon.

AT&T Connecticut was formerly Southern New England Telephone (SNET) of which AT&T, prior to February 1984, held a 16.8% interest. Since SNET was only a minority holding of AT&T and not considered a Bell Operating Company, AT&T was not legally required to divest ownership of SNET. It opted to do so after January 1, 1984.

The Southern New England Telephone Company was held by Southern New England Telecommunications Corporation, which SBC (now the new AT&T) purchased in 1998.
