Slow with HSDPA and LTE upgrades? No problem!
04:33PM Wednesday Sep 16 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: business · wireless · Op/Ed
Sure, ok. Carriers like Rogers Wireless and Vodafone Portugal are deploying 21 Mbps wireless broadband before AT&T even begins upgrading their HSDPA network to 7.2 Mbps. And ok, Verizon Wireless plans to have 30 LTE wireless broadband markets commercially launched before AT&T even takes off their LTE lab coat. But according to AT&T, there's no problem with the giant carrier taking the "slow and steady" approach to getting their wireless network upgraded:
Kris Rinne, SVP of architecture and planning, said in her keynote this morning that AT&T will begin trials of the technology next year with initial commercial launches planned for 2011. There's more to an LTE launch than just deploying a network, she told the crowd. "Are we going to be left behind by our competitors as we roll out LTE?" she asked rhetorically. "I would contend 'no.' As I've said before, it's not just about speed, it's about the whole customer experience."
Of course the problem has been that contrary to what AT&T's CEO seems to think, the AT&T wireless "experience" hasn't been all that hot of late, according to customers. And taking the "slow and steady" approach to network upgrades is what left them unprepared for the massive influx of data-hungry iPhone users. As long as we're talking "customer experience," AT&T continues to rank as one of the lower ranked carriers when you look at the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Customer experience? Really?

AT&T's spent the last few weeks dialing up the PR to help improve their recently tarnished image on the wireless front, instead of beefing up their wireless investment CAPEX. AT&T might want to spend some of the cash they spend convincing the public their wireless network is great -- on actually making their wireless network great.

We're behind, we have a customer perception problem, so our

Plan is to go slow and cheap and maybe have something going in a few years.

WTF are they thinking, they should be fast-tracking this in oversubscribed markets!

Re: We're behind, we have a customer perception problem, so our

They are so into penny wise and pound foolish that instead of leveraging the iPhone success they are going to spend a fortune retaining a shrinking customers base instead of spending it upgrading their network. They could use the fiber upgrade to the cell sites to also upgrade their entire last mile network.

The only thing they seem to justify spending extra money on is upper management incomes.

I agree... they have to fix their issues NOW, AND start working on LTE at the same time.

Time to market is a critical component (having LTE too early won't help much for AT&T, as LTE should be a relatively smooth path). VZW HAS to deploy LTE sooner than later, as there's no upgrade from EVDO Rev A for them.

To fix their image, they need to fix the existing customer base first, and finish deploying HSPA and ensure that there's enough capacity. Since there are no LTE handsets (it'll be primarily data cards initially), I don't see an issue with being 1 year later than VZW. AT&T/Cingular were at least 2 years behind in deploying 3G anyways.

Cust Satisf numbers are all over the place

The customer satisfaction numbers are pretty variable from year to year for AT&T and Sprint. And they are fairly steady for Verizon & T-Mobile. Looks like AT&T has had a bad 2009(no doubt due to problems from iPhone users) and Sprint has rebounded nicely from a really bad 2008.

Both AT&T and Sprint still have a ways to go to catch up to Verizon.

Gosh, those are some insanely low customer service ratings.

I wonder what European carriers manage to achieve.

Thanks for posting this GOLFnSUN. I contributed to AT&T's bad 2009... I loved the iPhone but hated AT&T's service. Now I have the Palm Pre with Sprint and I love it.

What I'm noticing from Sprint that they seem to be trying very hard to rebound and win customers. I can vouch that their service all around is surprisingly fantastic! I had heard mixed things about Sprint but so far I'm extremely satisfied. Almost too satisfied...

I had VZW before AT&T and they were pretty good all around. Times have changed and so have their plans so I can no longer judge the quality and cost of their service.

Getting Dizzy....

...from all the spinning...

Yeah, shareholders love slow and steady.

And WTF is this crap about the user experience? Its either fast or its not. And in the case of AT&T, its not.

One has to wonder if they can even afford

AT&T is a huge behemoth. It's any wonder their wireless network even functions. They may be one company, but I suspect their wireless infrastructure is a disjointed mess. Just look to their Uverse deployments for any indication of what's going on.

Verizon will have a easier time with LTE than AT&T. There are several concurrent deployments of LTE now scheduled in the US in 2010. Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS, and I believe T-Mobile will all be deploying LTE to several markets. While some markets will overlap, many will be able to cover other markets not covered by one another. This provides a larger general footprint for roaming which any of those companies will gladly deal with.

Roaming provides a great way to see where demand is and encourages build out in those areas to contain costs and reduce roaming charges along with the general delployment.

One disadvantage all these companies face is bandwidth to the cell tower. Today cell towers use T1's bundled through multiplexers or routers and LTE will require at minimum 100+ meg's worth of bandwidth in areas they expect to see many concurrent customers.

Sadly they all missed the boat with how WiMax could of helped here. Sprint was rumored to use WiMax to do backhaul in populated areas and save upwards of 20 billion on fees paid to telco's to carry their traffic in the larger cities. They never capitalized on this though.

AT&T is just now deploying bandwidth to support the iPhone which is killing their network, I can see why they say 2011 for LTE because it will take them 18 months at least to order and deploy any reasonable amount of circuits to support anything.

Is it any wonder why they're just going to 7.2mbit instead of 21mbit like other carriers? It's clear they're going to be playing catchup for quite awhile in terms of bandwidth and their customers will suffer.

Prediction...

Before this thread hits 20 posts, we'll have at least 2 people complaining about how it's all those darn iPhone people who are killing AT&T.

To me, it looks more like it's AT&T who is making that extra effort toward killing themselves. Yep, AT&T is what I've always wanted in a wireless company: slow to change, slow to build, and slow to react.

The only thing that's going to be steady about them is the number of people leaving their network to go elsewhere, if the iPhone (or an iPhone killer) ever crops up somewhere else. I'm holding out my hopes for either the Palm Pre or an Andriod-based phone to do it, but certainly not holding my breath right now (based solely upon adoption rates of these platforms).

It is all us darn iPhone people who are killing AT&T lol.

My 2GB + wireless 3G usage each month doesn't help. But all in all, I don't care what carrier the iPhone is on. if you put as many iPhones on a network as AT&T has it's going to bring the network to its knees.

The problem is the iPhone, that's exactly what's killing AT&T. Their 3G network isn't fantastic to begin with, throw millions of iPhones into the mix and you've got a load of slow, unreliable crap.

"it's about the whole customer experience."

Damn at&t, you guys should be the last one talking about customer experience lol....

They will just keep their slow "UPGRADES" and milk their customers as long as the iphone stay exclusive. But meh....screw the iphone, after playing with the HTC Touch Pro 2, the iphone is a thing of the past.

Slow and steady...

Almost describes how it feels to actually use their 3G in congested areas. Except it isn't even steady. Just slow.

I wish AT&T didn't suck so much, because the iPhone itself is just a lot of fun to use.

2008 Lobbying Budget

AT&T - $15 Million
Verizon - $18 Million
Comcast - $12.5 Million

Karl has reported on this before, but these millions can also buy alot of infrastructure.

Comparo?

Apple spends about $1.6 Million.

Who gets a better user experience for their lobbying dollar?

Cingular? Really?

I just got an iPhone and apparently lucked out - around my home the coverage is great and the voice quality is equal to my T-Mobile phone.

Someone mentioned that behind the scenes ATT is probably a disjointed mess, and I bet that's true. My experience in buying and activating the phone at an apple store was fine, but once I got home and started digging around the ATT site, I found that a number of things that generate an email (ie: change password, create web account, etc.) were still referencing cingular in the headers and text of the emails. I mean, come on... didn't that transaction happen long ago?

Other fun stuff:

-the "mywireless" portion of the site works on the iPhone, but is not optimized for it (or likely ANY mobile browser). This is beyond stupid if you're trying to pimp your big ticket phone(s).

-the account portal was unavailable for about 6 hours last evening.

-still no mms or tethering, but oh how my phone taunts me with greyed out options for the tethering option.

These assholes should be falling all over themselves to get their shit together to service an influx of people that are buying phones with a plan that starts at $70...

The phone itself does kick ass, and my fingers do take to the touch keyboard nicely, so that's a plus.

Cingular is still everywhere for AT&T. Look at the data and MMS settings on brand new AT&T phones: it's still all Cingular.

DIAL UP?!?

(rant) DIAL UP?!? They're still on DIAL UP?!? No wonders why they're so slow in deploying everything. They haven't even upgraded to their own DSL! I betcha they're still pulling the HSDPA 21Mbps plans through a 56K modem.(/rant)

AT&T Sucks, bad.

I live in OKC, and my best friend lives in Orlando. Both of us have AT&T. He has an iPhone, I have a Nokia E63-2. I used to have an iPhone, but dropped it because I refused to pay for the iPhone plan when I could not have a 5 minute conversation without dropping a call. My best friend and I get disconnected EVERY SINGLE TIME WE TALK, and if one of us happens to be in the car, it happens much more often.

I drop calls when I talk to ANYONE, any time. 3G coverage in OKC is spotty, at best. Handoffs from 3g to edge don't work properly here. The 3g network here is slower than shit (can never break 1mbps when tethered or with a mobile broadband card).

As soon as Verizon gets an Android device, I'm jumping ship. I can't take it anymore.

Re: AT&T Sucks, bad.

I just spent a ton of time reflashing by Blackberry Bold to non-ATT firmware (and then reloading and retweaking everything) just so that I could force myself to EDGE because of problems with ATT's 3g role out. Detroit was one of ATT first 3g implementations. We had it when ATT really was the old ATT and shared that distinction with San Fransisco and about two other cities. Because of this, we had a mature 3g network, but even here we're having problems. ATT signed the customers first and worried about expanding the network second.

Americans Rarely Go With Slow But Steady

I am an American, but I think my country is short sighted generally and don't see how they will be any different with their phones. Watch the elections if you want any proof of that. Three months before a presidential election, the current office holder will always apply some quick fix to temporarily lower the price of gas during the election season. American corporations focus on immediate profits often to the sake of long term goals. Look at many of the causes underlying our economic crisis on all sides. Large companies granting mortgages to people who couldn't pay for the houses to get a short term profit while contributing to our worst financial collapse since the great depression. Then lets ask why so many educated and sophisticated investors went with Bernie Madoff(sp).

People have portable cell phone numbers, heavily subsidized phones, and two year contracts in the U.S. Switching between carriers is not a big thing. I think most Americans will go with the company that gets the job done for them today and won't endure black holes in their living room and dropped calls at their office because in two years, ATT will have the best HSPA network in world. They'll switch to Verizon (or Sprint...) and say that they will revisit the issue in two years.

I think what ATT is actually saying is: "we need to fix our network capacity issues today, build out or capacity, and then worry about 21 Mbps wireless broadband."

It's no longer angering me.

AT&T ineptitude no longer angers me. In fact I just feel sorry for them now. They are like the special ed kid who just accidentally fell down the stairs.

What is worse is that my L3 friends over at AT&T still claim that the network isn't limping anywhere except major metropolises. They claim this "slow to react" attitude is all managements decisions to maximize profits and reduce capital expenditures. One of them thinks that the captive iphone audience is the reason they won't move quicker. The subsidized iphone deal is a slow profit mechanism so management thinks that their network upgrades need to follow that same slow speed so capex does not exceed the yearly profits.

But that is just opinions from my college friends who work over at AT&T. Sounds plausible though.

Well; I have NO problem with AT&T. I have a Blackberry & have no problems with the phone or service. I could switch over to Verizon anytime. But I'm definitely NOT paying for their high price data plan. I don't care how nice their customer reps are. That's just the way I feel.
