The only thing they seem to justify spending extra money on is upper management incomes.

Yeah, shareholders love slow and steady.
And WTF is this crap about the user experience? Its either fast or its not. And in the case of AT&T, its not.

| One has to wonder if they can even afford AT&T is a huge behemoth. It's any wonder their wireless network even functions. They may be one company, but I suspect their wireless infrastructure is a disjointed mess. Just look to their Uverse deployments for any indication of what's going on.
Verizon will have a easier time with LTE than AT&T. There are several concurrent deployments of LTE now scheduled in the US in 2010. Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS, and I believe T-Mobile will all be deploying LTE to several markets. While some markets will overlap, many will be able to cover other markets not covered by one another. This provides a larger general footprint for roaming which any of those companies will gladly deal with.
Roaming provides a great way to see where demand is and encourages build out in those areas to contain costs and reduce roaming charges along with the general delployment.
One disadvantage all these companies face is bandwidth to the cell tower. Today cell towers use T1's bundled through multiplexers or routers and LTE will require at minimum 100+ meg's worth of bandwidth in areas they expect to see many concurrent customers.
Sadly they all missed the boat with how WiMax could of helped here. Sprint was rumored to use WiMax to do backhaul in populated areas and save upwards of 20 billion on fees paid to telco's to carry their traffic in the larger cities. They never capitalized on this though.
AT&T is just now deploying bandwidth to support the iPhone which is killing their network, I can see why they say 2011 for LTE because it will take them 18 months at least to order and deploy any reasonable amount of circuits to support anything.
Is it any wonder why they're just going to 7.2mbit instead of 21mbit like other carriers? It's clear they're going to be playing catchup for quite awhile in terms of bandwidth and their customers will suffer. -- Play a Death Knight? www.theebonhold.com

My 2GB + wireless 3G usage each month doesn't help. But all in all, I don't care what carrier the iPhone is on. if you put as many iPhones on a network as AT&T has it's going to bring the network to its knees.

Damn at&t, you guys should be the last one talking about customer experience lol....
They will just keep their slow "UPGRADES" and milk their customers as long as the iphone stay exclusive. But meh....screw the iphone, after playing with the HTC Touch Pro 2, the iphone is a thing of the past.

| Cingular? Really? I just got an iPhone and apparently lucked out - around my home the coverage is great and the voice quality is equal to my T-Mobile phone.
Someone mentioned that behind the scenes ATT is probably a disjointed mess, and I bet that's true. My experience in buying and activating the phone at an apple store was fine, but once I got home and started digging around the ATT site, I found that a number of things that generate an email (ie: change password, create web account, etc.) were still referencing cingular in the headers and text of the emails. I mean, come on... didn't that transaction happen long ago?
Other fun stuff:
-the "mywireless" portion of the site works on the iPhone, but is not optimized for it (or likely ANY mobile browser). This is beyond stupid if you're trying to pimp your big ticket phone(s).
-the account portal was unavailable for about 6 hours last evening.
-still no mms or tethering, but oh how my phone taunts me with greyed out options for the tethering option.
These assholes should be falling all over themselves to get their shit together to service an influx of people that are buying phones with a plan that starts at $70...
The phone itself does kick ass, and my fingers do take to the touch keyboard nicely, so that's a plus. -- with every mistake we must surely be learning

| AT&T Sucks, bad. I live in OKC, and my best friend lives in Orlando. Both of us have AT&T. He has an iPhone, I have a Nokia E63-2. I used to have an iPhone, but dropped it because I refused to pay for the iPhone plan when I could not have a 5 minute conversation without dropping a call. My best friend and I get disconnected EVERY SINGLE TIME WE TALK, and if one of us happens to be in the car, it happens much more often.
I drop calls when I talk to ANYONE, any time. 3G coverage in OKC is spotty, at best. Handoffs from 3g to edge don't work properly here. The 3g network here is slower than shit (can never break 1mbps when tethered or with a mobile broadband card).
As soon as Verizon gets an Android device, I'm jumping ship. I can't take it anymore. -- MCSE, ACSA, and a lot more

| Re: AT&T Sucks, bad. I just spent a ton of time reflashing by Blackberry Bold to non-ATT firmware (and then reloading and retweaking everything) just so that I could force myself to EDGE because of problems with ATT's 3g role out. Detroit was one of ATT first 3g implementations. We had it when ATT really was the old ATT and shared that distinction with San Fransisco and about two other cities. Because of this, we had a mature 3g network, but even here we're having problems. ATT signed the customers first and worried about expanding the network second. | |

| Americans Rarely Go With Slow But Steady I am an American, but I think my country is short sighted generally and don't see how they will be any different with their phones. Watch the elections if you want any proof of that. Three months before a presidential election, the current office holder will always apply some quick fix to temporarily lower the price of gas during the election season. American corporations focus on immediate profits often to the sake of long term goals. Look at many of the causes underlying our economic crisis on all sides. Large companies granting mortgages to people who couldn't pay for the houses to get a short term profit while contributing to our worst financial collapse since the great depression. Then lets ask why so many educated and sophisticated investors went with Bernie Madoff(sp).
People have portable cell phone numbers, heavily subsidized phones, and two year contracts in the U.S. Switching between carriers is not a big thing. I think most Americans will go with the company that gets the job done for them today and won't endure black holes in their living room and dropped calls at their office because in two years, ATT will have the best HSPA network in world. They'll switch to Verizon (or Sprint...) and say that they will revisit the issue in two years.
I think what ATT is actually saying is: "we need to fix our network capacity issues today, build out or capacity, and then worry about 21 Mbps wireless broadband."

| It's no longer angering me. AT&T ineptitude no longer angers me. In fact I just feel sorry for them now. They are like the special ed kid who just accidentally fell down the stairs.
What is worse is that my L3 friends over at AT&T still claim that the network isn't limping anywhere except major metropolises. They claim this "slow to react" attitude is all managements decisions to maximize profits and reduce capital expenditures. One of them thinks that the captive iphone audience is the reason they won't move quicker. The subsidized iphone deal is a slow profit mechanism so management thinks that their network upgrades need to follow that same slow speed so capex does not exceed the yearly profits.
But that is just opinions from my college friends who work over at AT&T. Sounds plausible though.
