Dish Network left in the dust
(old news - 09:53AM Saturday Sep 27 2008)
tags: satellite · competition · business · telco · bundles · AT&T DSL Service · DIRECTV · Dish Network
Back in July AT&T announced that the company’s agreement with Dish Network to sell bundled TV, phone and broadband packages would be terminated at the end of this year. This caused speculation that the purpose of the announcement was to incite a bidding war for AT&T partnership between Dish and DirecTV. AT&T has now announced a partnership to market and sell co-branded DirecTV services starting in January 2009. These services will be marketed in areas where AT&T does not offer its own U-Verse service. Dish customers who get their service through AT&T will continue receiving their services through January 31st. After that, Dish could be in some trouble; AT&T’s partnership with DirecTV comes on the heels of Dish’s first-ever quarterly subscriber loss, a problem which was not experienced by DirecTV. The new partnership with AT&T gives DirecTV another boost in the competition between the two satellite providers.

This is great!

I've been with DirecTV for more than 8 years, and the few times I've tried Dish I wasn't happy.

It's too bad I'll be in Verizon country by the time the bundle option comes along.

Re: This is great!

Per above, Krenim191

I doubt that Verizon is happy about this new situation. Wonder if Verizon will sever this current DirecTV relationship, and start a new Dish Network bundle relationship.

Since I live in area like Krenim191 mentions, am interested. Should I bundle NOW w/Verizon and DirecTV, or wait?

Re: This is great!

I doubt they would kill off relations with DirecTV over this. AFAIK - you MUST have 1) a landline or 2) internet and wireless service with Verizon to bundle DirecTV. In that aspect, at&t and Verizon do not share the the same marketplace.

It would be nice if you could just bundle VZW and DirecTV. I have no need for landline and I can't get Verizon DSL where I live. Oh well - maybe a DirecTV and Verizon Wireless bundle is in the future

I have heard that. Though I simply would not move to a non-Fios serviced area. A 20/20 line for less than I'm paying for a 2 line combined 12/1.5 is just insane, and has definitely become a factor in the house hunt.

"Verizon also bundles with DirecTV in areas that they don't offer FIOS."

Verizon has been offering me DirecTV bundles for the last year +.

Per Camelot One
"I have heard that. Though I simply would not move to a non-Fios serviced area."

The only Verizon FiOS available in the entire Midwest(Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota) that I am aware of, is in Fort Wayne, Indiana(and 2 suburbs). Verizon has ignored their old GTE North/GTE Midwest area, when it comes to FiOS.

We are headed to Florida. (Tampa to be exact) And after price, "is Fios available" has been my first question on every house we've looked at.

Last time I checked the AT&T/Dish bundle, it didn't actually save you anything over getting the offerings separately. It was just this "convenience of a single bill" thing.

To me, that's actually very INconvenient, because whenever you have a billing issue with Dish, you have to go through AT&T. I'd much rather have the bills broken out separately, and be able to deal with each provider separately.

Re: This is great!

I can't stand AT&T's billing. Tons of made up fee's, taxes and surcharges, followed by a few discounts if you jump through the hoops they want.

I got fed up when my $20 a month DSL Express wound up costing about $40. After I cancelled they still charged for 2 months at a $45 per month rate.

No thank you! I prefer my DirecTV bill separate.

Billing issues are why I ended up leaving AT&T altogether. When I signed up I had POTS/DSL/Dish. I was supposed to get a mere $5/month discount for bundled services. Then all of a sudden the discounts disappeared. I'd have to call every month to fix different billing issues. Finally after several months of calling about the Dish bundle discount, they told me that I was supposed to have their $55 unlimited long distance package to get the discount. That's when I switched to Comcast.

IF I ended up going back to AT&T for anything (which is very doubtful), I'd still keep satellite separate for the simple reason that I hated dealing with AT&T billing.

Either you will love it or hate it

I am a long time Directv subscriber and AT&T DSL and landline subscriber as well. I never was happy with Dish Network. So I just used Directv. Now, with this new agreement in place, I am very happy.

The dish network subscribers will not be pleased about this thats for sure.

From the other side: I am a twelve year Dish Network customer who uses Verizon FiOS for Internet (No FiOS TV available in our area for at least the next five years), Verizon wireless for the cellphone, and VoIP for my landline. As I prefer best-of-breed solutions for these services rather than "convenient billing," it is a non-issue for me that AT&T severed their relationship with Dish.

Actually it probably won't affect you at all.

All AT&T does with Dish is sell a bundle of DSL + phone + TV using satellite. They have their own gateway which provides some basic integration (it's called Home something or other).

I expect them to do something similar with DirecTV. But if you are not a new sub, you will just continue with your current DirecTV subscription.

You could bundle your bills together but why? They don't actually give you much of a price break, if any. And, you have the hassle of not being able to go directly to the provider (Dish or DirecTV) when there's a billing issue.

For bundling my at&t wireless bill to my landline, I get $3 off. If they offer me $5 off my directv bill, why wouldn't I take it? I haven't had a billing issue in 4 years I have been with them. Ah well, I suppose paying a little more for the piece of mind of having one throat to choke is a good thing.

I am getting a $5.00 bundling credit on my at&t/Dish billing.

PLUS, I got one year of free HD (a $240 value). I wont mention the knock down drag out fight I had to go though with at&t to get them to honor their part of the deal. Dish honored their part with no problems.

PrimeStar was a separate satellite service from DirecTV. It launched its service in 1991, 3 years before DirecTV. It was acquired and shut down by DirecTV in 1999. Primestar customers were transitioned to DirecTV.

oh noes

Firstly, this is 100% about AT&T getting their hands on DirectTV's NFL ticket for Uverse.

Secondly, I've had DirectTV for 7 years now and this news gave me a stomach ache. I don't need AT&T screwing up my TV.

Uverse has much worse compression and only supports 1 HD stream. They're also doing ad injection and their PPV movies suck. In so many ways, DirectTV is superior. I'm nervous about how this is going to work out. DirectTV makes Uverse look bad. Has to be about the NFL ticket.

i don't understand i have been a longtime dish network user, and 2 years ago i switched to DirecTV with at&t bundle with 10.00 dollars off a month

that was 2 years ago at&t offered DirecTV instead of dish.i didn't like DirecTV at all the programming was fine i didn't like the channel guide at all doesn't let you know what channels you actually have without setting up a user guide, and even then you had to click on that channel to see if you actually had that channel was a big hassle to set up.

i don't know it may be better now,but i have been a dish user for 8 years except for the year i used DirecTV so what am i missing i did this 2 years ago did they switch back to dish now back to DirecTV IM confused, also i had the standard with DirecTV the may be better, but i have heard DirecTV dvr is not near as good as dish dvr.i love my dish dvr i will stay with dish

Get your facts right. In most areas Uverse now offers 2 HDs streams, and the are slowly rolling out phase I of their THDVR system.

And I seriously doubt this has anything to do with AT&T getting its hands on NFL Sunday Ticket for Uverse service. The NFL & Direct TV have an exculsive contract for the Sunday Ticket Package. Under the terms of this contract Direct TV cannot resell the service to anyone else, with out the NFL's prior approval, and I'm sure the NFL would then want more money. The result this has nothing to do with NFL Sunday Ticket, it has to do with money. Direct TV simply offered AT&T a larger share of the pot for every subscriber they bring in, verus what DISH was willing to give. "It's all about the money!"

Relax.

You're confusing a merger with a co-branded marketing arrangement (which is what this is). AT&T is simply using DirecTV to supplement its current offerings, but that doesn't affect existing DirecTV subscribers at all. IF you have DirecTV now, you'll continue to have the same flavor.

I have DirecTV and quite frankly, my only complaints: CW HD is literally unwatchable for some reason, and MyNetworkTV is not provided in HD yet.

You're pulling this straight out of your butt.

DirecTV is DirecTV, whether AT&T markets and resells it or not. It'll have an NFL Ticket option. AT&T does not "get their hands" on it. AT&T won't be able, for example, to get NFL Ticket for U-verse TV, just because they are co-marketing with DirecTV.

Also, if AT&T wants to cut a deal with the NFL, they go to the freakin NFL! They don't do a back door with some other provider.

Secondly, I've had DirectTV for 7 years now and this news gave me a stomach ache. I don't need AT&T screwing up my TV.
It won't affect you. Your DirecTV sub will continue as is.

Your logic is completely wrong. AT&T does a satellite deal because U-verse isn't very widespread yet, so they have to have something to offer their customers who want to deal with a single vendor. It has nothing to do with competing with U-verse, or not. AT&T will only offer the satellite packages in areas where U-verse isn't available. Likewise, AT&T will NOT offer the satellite package if you have access to U-verse.

Also, your facts are wrong. U-verse supports 2 HD streams, not one. And they are not "doing ad injection". I will agree that their HD PQ is not as good as DirecTV but it is not a giant gap. I can't comment on PPV because I have no experience there.

This has one purpose and one purpose only. To offer the triple play where they can't offer it with U-Verse. Where they never plan to offer U-Verse. With this option they can expand the DSL footprint to the less desirable areas and still have a worthwhile triple play bundle available.

DirecTV will never give up Sunday ticket. Dish network is just going down the tubes, and DirecTV is on the up slant right now. If they're gong to do a partnership why wouldn't they select the best option from a programming standpoint. DirecTV is the best there is for programming. They've been for quite sometime. They have more HD and they have the Sunday ticket. Dish can;t compete with that, and neither can any of the other cable providers. The only downfall is having a dish on your home, and I don't mind that.

What about current contracts?

Come January 2009 I will still have 6 months left on my 18 month at&t/DishNetwork contract. Will the termination have any effect on my contract?

I have been with Dish for many years and love their programming, equipment, and service. I don't know how DirecTV could be that much better.

I do absolutely HATE what was formerly SBC (now at&t) and would like to get away from them as much as possible. Their customer service and integrity to honor their word must be the worst in history.

Just for the record, I am very happy with my at&t(Cingular) wireless service.

Re: What about current contracts?

You will more than likely be 'grandfathered' in and still pay the same rate you are paying now as long as you do not change any programming. You will also have to finish out your contract with Dish.

When/if you change your programming, your rate will probably change. Some companies will keep your grandfathered plans until you change your programming.

I can answer this one, currently in the exiting contract (or the current one before DirecTV gets the pie) it was stipulated in the contract that AT&T/Dish Network contracts remain till they expire. After that Dish Network can do as they wish. If you like the service you can keep it, it will just be Dish Network you will contact.

Bundles are bad

It would take years to recoup the setup cost that you will pay by setting up your service through AT&T with their meager $2 billing discount. You can do better on your own with free hardware and installation as well as free introductory programming. None of those deals apply to new subs through the bundle program.
