AT&T Planning 10,000 Foot Chicago Super Store
'This Store is All About the Experience,' says AT&T With Straight Face
by Karl Bode 09:23AM Thursday Aug 30 2012
AT&T is the latest carrier to believe that by building a giant store that somewhat resembles an Apple store they can lift what are traditionally seen as somewhat old-fashioned brands. Bloomberg News notes that AT&T is getting ready to launch a 10,000 square foot super store slathered with white plastic furniture and cement floors. "We are very different than Apple," AT&T tells Bloomberg with a straight face. "In their stores, the product is the hero. This store is all about the experience." Bloomberg kindly goes out of their way to ignore AT&T's last place showing in most consumer satisfaction studies, or how a giant Apple-esque store isn't going to do anything to help fix the company's core support and network issues or snotty lobbyists. Perhaps poor support, astroturfers paid to be enthusiastic and snide executive commentary is part of the traditional AT&T "experience"?

Get a preview look at new store

Very familiar if you have ever been in one of Apple's big retail stores.

It is a big improvement over the usual AT&T store in the typical suburban mall. The key will be on staffing though. Will they actually have staff that can help troubleshoot product problems?

Re: Get a preview look at new store

How dare they duplicate the Apple store? Don't they know Apple patented store layout/fungus sway decades ago? They will be hearing from their lawyers very soon!.......

That aside, I bet there will be 10 employees floating around talking last night's Keeping up with the Kardashians and one employee who can actually fix your phone, but he is in the back about to hang himself from all the idiocy he unknowingly signed up for.

Cover Charge?

Knowing "A Fee & Fee", they will probably have a fee to walk into the store (possibly creditable against an added line).

Re: Cover Charge?

Odd, my fees went down when AT&T bought Alltel in my market from Verizon (mandated divestiture). Alltel had the WORST bogus fees.

Good One

Right, because a fancy store is going to change my hatred and loathing of this company, its products, its customer service, and how they operate and conduct business.

AT&T (i.e. Southwestern Bell re-badged) is a classic example of a company that survives by virtue of their monopoly.

You'd think if they can afford these fancy schmancy new stores that maybe they could engage in some competitive pricing?

The Microsoft Store is also an Apple Store ripoff.

You really think Apple is the first to come up with the idea of a company store? Apple is nothing more than integrator of parts. They have invented almost nothing on their own since Woz left the company.

No it really is. Wooden tables, employees wear lanyard style badges, there is a support area, lots of white light. Complete rip-off.

So let me get this straight:

1) Wooden tables - Apple invented wood tables?
2) Lanyard badge wearing - Apple invented employees wearing lanyard badges?
3) White light - Apple invented white light?

Guys, no sense arguing with apple fanboy cultists. If Steve Jobs told them that he invented them, they would believe it and call him daddy.

You only hope it's sarcasm. Most apple fanboys feel this way.

They've been showing it since the Samsung trial..

I heard

That they will have in store pickpockets roaming the store, taking people's wallets so that they can get used to the "AT&T Experience".

Store is on Chicago's Magnificent Mile

, which is the high rent shopping district.

Per info given, it's on the 600 block of North Michigan Avenue.

AT&T is one of the big hitters in the Democrat majority state legislature.

Hope the store isn't slow like their network in Chicago

Let me get this right, they want to build a store to sell awesome products and services, yet their 3G service everywhere in the loop still doesn't work. I have worked all over the loop and there is not one single place in the Chicago loop that my 3G service actually worked right. Seriously, from my iPhone 3G to my iPhone 4, I can tell you for a fact it isn't my phone rather it is the service. Speed tests show 2000 MS responses on packets (when they don't time out) and I am lucky if I hit a burst up to 92 megabits per second on download. Upload hits maybe 50 Mbps about 10% of the time I try to use it, the remaining 90% of the time it times out.

Fix your data network in Chicago before you build a store to sell more useless garbage!!

I have no doubt they will have more boosters in that store then found at an Itty Bitty Titty Committee convention.

waste of money

Cool, but waste of money. I've worked in corporate retail for major telco providers and retail stores are operated as loss leaders for the company. There is absolutely no point in operating such an extravagant store, unless you can sell a bunch of 3rd party accessories and other non subscription based goods to generate enough revenue to make the store self sustaining.

Maybe if they take Circuit City's place...

Turn it into a Fry's by AT&T. Put one in South Carolina while you're at it. I'm kinda tired of being the "parts guy" in my area because my Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight uses Wang computers as blocks.

Get me a box of those modern Internets you guys have while you're at it. These 256-color Nintendo Power covers can't keep a man entertained forever.

Check your ATT bill...

When you see that new $.50c service C fee ( or any non essential fee go up) on your bills in the future you have already seen where its going to.

This store is all about the at&t experience?

What a great store to walk into, you say as empty suits greet you at the door. While talking you notice you periodically can't hear them and then you have to repeat the conversation again.

While walking around, you notice one table has fast internet. The other busy tables have decent internet, and everywhere else has dial up. You ask why this is and the suits blame each other.

As you walk around, you notice that the furniture only looks nice, looking closer you see that it was band-aided together from 1970's furniture.

If you dare buy anything they bend you over at the desk and remove your money.

And as you walk out they tell you they are gonna buy the mobile phone store next door. You ask why, and they say it'll help with the experience. You further ask why, considering it would just be two redundant stores next to each other, and they cry to the cops and ban you from coming.

Did I get the at&t experience about right?

Re: This store is all about the at&t experience?

I thought when they were saying it was
"all about the experience", they were talking about how the customer bends over to take it up the posterior when it comes to needing
ACTUAL customer service.

I figured since this was the halo store that perhaps
ATT CEO Randall Stephenson would personally assist you by turning you upside down and shaking the last red cent from your pocket.

Why not forget the fancy shell and spend that money on improving the HORRIBLE almost NONEXISTENT, no, NONEXISTENT customer service at ATT.
