AT&T Pricing For International iPad 3G
You should probably start saving...

Of course the 3G enabled version of the iPad dropped last weekend, the version that includes HSDPA support costing an additional $130 over the price of the Wi-Fi only version. Pricing to access AT&T's network was as expected -- a tier offering 250 MB of data for $15 a month, or a tier offering unlimited use for $30 a month. Though a little more quietly, AT&T also released International roaming iPad 3G pricing, and the pricing alone is certainly similar to the kind of pricing we've grown used to (and the kind of pricing that results in insane 3G bills. The pricing:

•$24.99/month: 20 MB Data Global Add-On gives you 20 MB of usage within more than 90 countries

•$59.99/month: 50 MB Data Global Add-On gives you 50 MB of usage within more than 90 countries

•$119.99/month: 100 MB Data Global Add-On gives you 100 MB of usage within more than 90 countries

•$199.99/month: 200 MB Data Global Add-On gives you 200 MB of usage within more than 90 countries

Of course those roaming overseas always have Wi-Fi to fall back on, should these prices be a little too ridiculous for you. The iPad also does have some slightly more sophisticated software involved that will alert users to the fact they're approaching their plan limit -- at which point you can order an additional "bucket 'o bytes" at not-so-rock-bottom prices.

What are international roaming rates for other cellular data providers?

T-Mobile.... International Roaming.... Germany..... $15/MB

Seriously, however, these companies need to change their "MB" to "GB". Perhaps then these prices would be a little bit more justified.

I doubt that AT&T is making money had over fist on this one. This is a cover our asses plan for when people travel to countries who skull f*** you when roaming on their networks.

Re: Are you freaking kidding

As soon as you step off the plane in the UK and turn on the phone you get a text from them (that they charge you for) letting you know that the standard international rate for roaming is $19.97 per MB. So if you are thinking the pre-pay bucket order is expensive, think again.

I'm thankful to have an JB/Unlocked Iphone. Gets to the UK, remove ATT sim, install T-mobile sim and enjoy unlimited data for 1BP per day and calls back to the US at about 5 pence per...

Screw you ATT.

If I'm not mistaken, these devices are unlocked, and can be used as WiFi only. Why on earth would anyone pay $25 for 20MB, or as much as an iPad WiFi just for 1/2 a GB of data ?

1. Use WiFi - these are not carrier locked
2. Use prepaid data cards

This is NOT a phone device like the iPhone. AT&T can set these prices, but its crazy to assume that people will use it.
I take that back... many will 'inadverently use it', rack up $10,000 bill and bring it to the media.

Actually, while it's true that AT&T sets their own prices, AT&T also has to pay the piper in each one of those countries.

If said country offered unlimited data access to huge multinational telcoms like AT&T on the cheap, then your $30 probably would go a long way.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Cell networks in foreign countries charge a freakin arm and a leg for data and AT&T has to pay them.

If AT&T paid the usage charges for you and only charged you $30/month, they would go bankrupt pretty damn quick.

It's no surprise of course, that International data costs an arm and a leg.  But really....who do they think is going to buy any of those plans?  I don't see who can afford those plans, except for customers who can afford to use $100 bills as toilet paper.

At least there's Wi-Fi to "get out" of that, but then again, how much Wi-Fi coverage is there?  I guess I say this because around here anyway, while a few places have it, none of the places that I visit frequently do.

At rates like those, it's only a matter of time until someone hacks the I-Pad, making it possible to put in another SIM card.  Then the customer could use a prepaid SIM.  As expensive as prepaid data may be, it's far cheaper than those rates!

Except, doesn't the iPad use some kind of mini or micro SIM? I wonder if any of the prepaid outfits offer those types of cards yet...

You can just cut the SIM with a knife or scissors to make it fit.

And...

If these prices are problematic, then it is probably best to leave one's AT&T SIM card at home when traveling abroad.

How much do prepaid data plans you can get abroad stack up to these rates?

I'll do it myself!

For these prices, I might as well lay my own damn fiber across the ocean floor and sell the bandwidth at wholesale. Any takers?

Don't use iPad 3G overseas unless rich or on expense acct

The international roaming rates makes taking an AT&T based iPad with you overseas kind of unreasonable. It would be cheaper to buy an iPad from a Europe provider and then throw it away when the trip was over.

Or turn off that 3G radio and just use WiFi, which is abundant overseas.

Roaming rates...

International roaming rates have always been high. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

If you really have to have your iPad 3G enabled overseas, get a SIM card from a carrier that won't cause you to incur roaming charges. There are a number of international providers that have service plans that let you do exactly that.

How so? Lots of international travelers regularly pick up SIM cards from local carriers in Europe and elsewhere to avoid roaming. And since the iPad isn't locked like the iPhone, any GSM carrier with compatible frequencies should work.

The caps and overages only apply if you roam using an ATT SIM on an operator overseas. If you get a SIM for a wireless provider in Europe, for example, that doesn't roam, then you don't have to worry about the low caps and the overages.

now we know why Israel temporarily banned the iPad from the country. Their intelligence people knew what AT&T was going to charge and they needed time to figure out how to tax such highway robbery.

Ding Ding Ding!

Grab a local SIM, much cheaper. Otherwise live with the charges, may be fine if you aren't a heavy user. International roaming is ALWAYS pricey, be it voice minutes, text messages, or data.

hmm

This doesn't seem like as much of a money grubbing issue as some are putting it. AT&T has to pay the piper and not all countries are on that list.

For instance, TURKCELL in Turkey, charges (as a baseline) $3.80 per 100 kb.

Now tell me AT&T is the problem there. Exactly.

People should actually do research into how much data costs in each country with a SIM for that network before assuming that it's just all affordable for everyone.

Enough demonizing AT&T for once.

Take a look at:

www.iphonetrip.com

It probably only makes sense in a multi-country trip or where there isn't a local solution on the ground yet.
