MPLS backbone upgraded to OC-768 speeds
(old news - 12:33PM Thursday Jun 08 2006)
tags: telco
More on AT&T's backbone upgrade planned for this summer over at Computer World. As part of "Project Lightspeed", the telco plans to upgrade its global MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) backbone to 40Gbit/second, OC-768 speeds this summer, quadrupling the backbone's current capacity. Global Crossing announced on Monday they have also begun upgrading their MPLS backbone to OC-768.

Wow, OC-768 is one heck of a backbone. 40Gbit/sec is great. It should be enough to support a lot of users.

Is that 40Gbit/sec symmetrical? If so I would like one for my PC.

Re: sure thats enough?

Nah they already built a separate backbone for that with 4 redundant OC-768 links.

funny

Funny to see this story immediately after the last one where telcos are getting bashed for not upgrading their networks.

And now getting bashed here again for upgrading. If your name is AT&T you can't please some people no matter what you do.

AT&T has been laying a good bit of fiber in our area but still no idea if they are going ot do something about the RT's so we can even get DSL time will tell.

40 Gbps is not enough. If they're spending this kind of money anyway, they should invest in upgrading further. Bandwidth usage is going to skyrocket in the next few years. Spending a little more now would be smarter.

Re: funny

I was thinking the same. 40 Gbps could be used up real quick with a bunch of HD channels.

Re: funny

OC-768 is the top end of current technology right now, but on the other hand a typical MPLS switch might have hundreds of OC-768 ports (usually 4 per line card), so that is a alot of available bandwidth.

Re: funny

Thats not true. New DWDM allows up to around 120gbps. Check out the SAFE pipeline. In a few years africas new ipv6 infastructure will make us look like the redneck retards we have running the country.

Re: funny

I guess I should have said manufacturable. I started working on OC-768 switches in 2000. It has taken 5-6 years for it to get to the point that you could sell a switch with the technology (i.e not a one off prototype). I suspect it will take just as long for OC-1536 or what-ever they call it to reach a mass producible state too.

What's funny is us worrying about africas infrastructure. As if they will be needing any such thing any time soon. Get real.

DWDM runs multiple "sonet" pipes on a single fiber. IE-- your example of 120 gbps would actually be 12 separate wavelengths each running 10 gbps or oc192 not a single wavelength at 120 gbps. (320-400 gbps second DWDM machines are not that uncommon-- 32-40 oc192's) So in single "beam" of light oc768 is as fast as you will see deployed-- however DWDM tech could allow someone to run multiple oc768 on a single fiber for even faster DWDM.

No capacity problems afterwards....

ONE DS3 = 44.375 MBPS
ONE OC-192= 192 DS3s
One OC-768 = 4 OC-192s.
After that is upgraded, I don't think they will have capacity problem anytime soon.

Re: No capacity problems afterwards....

It may look that way now, but remember, this is only for their backbone. AT&T's whole reason for even upgrading their network was to offer video, not solely Inet data.

If you have an expected backbone usage of mainly Inet and VPN services (plus POTS calls), that's one thing. Throwing video into the mix adds a whole new dynamic to the sustained rate of data being transmitted.

Hmm, one can easily multicast 200 HD IPTV channels SIMULTANEOUSLY using h.264 or VC-1 on 1.6-1.8 Gbps. What makes you think the overhead would require +20X that figure?

I would imagine 180 SD and 20 HD channels (for a 200-channel mix) would require 1Gbps if all channels were multicasted simultaneously. I'm not seeing the 40Gbps need, yet.

More Bandwidth

You can never have enough bandwidth . Now what would be cool is if I could have that installed in my apartment. I could download a DVD (or pr0n) is less that a second.

The ultimate Quagmire dream... Downloading pr0n faster than you can view it, even in fast forward mode

I can see the headlines from here
"he was found laying dead in his home office, half naked. preliminary reports seem to indicate he was victim of a heart attack, apparently due to intense exhaustion. His computer was still turned on, and was displaying what appears to be an adult movie played 12 times its normal speed."

What about the Last Mile?

That's great for the Backbone, but Copper to the Home is not going to cut it. If AT&T does not commit to FTTH, they will fail.

Got to start somewhere.

1 OC-768 can serve 768 RT sites with 1 DS-3 to each one. Have you ever seen 768 sites placed in one area in one year? Manufacturing companies would never catch up with that kind of demand. The fiber companies are right now on a 3-6 weeks turn around. Larger count fiber is even longer(3-4 months). One site would have at least 2 fiber to it to run the Dslam.
Around here we are pushing 6 fiber to each site on the smallest cable to the site being a 24 fiber cable.

2 x 768 = 1536
4 x 768 = 3072
6 x 768 = 4608

On top of that replacing equipment that is only a couple of years old that can not be used for IPTV. One should happy that they are upgrading the network to put fiber to at least 5000 ft. from your doorstep. IT IS a start. Things take time. I know it is never fast enough for some of the people here.
