AT&T Quietly Backs Off Facetime Restrictions -- Completely
Even For Grandfathered Unlimited Users...
by Karl Bode 10:39AM Wednesday Nov 21 2012 Tipped by IPPlanMan See Profile
After previously saying they'd only back off of Facetime restrictions for some users, AT&T quietly this week started letting everyone -- including grandfathered unlimited iPhone users -- use the feature they paid for. Originally, AT&T only allowed users to use Facetime over Wi-Fi. Then, they allowed Facetime over cellular, but only if users signed up for their new shared data plan with its $15 per gigabyte overage fees. Earlier this month AT&T announced they'd be easing off those restrictions and letting anyone on a capped data plan -- but not grandfathered unlimited users -- use Factime.

Click for full size
Now, AT&T appears to be yet again changing their position, letting some of their grandfathered unlimited users use Facetime in what's a total (though perhaps accidental) turnaround from what many believe was an anti-competitive and ridiculous original position to begin with:
quote:
In a recent thread we were discussing AT&T members getting facetime with LTE devices and tiered plans. However I noticed today that I have facetime over cellular and I have an unlimited plan on my 5. I just turned off my other phone, a 4S and turned it back on, only to find the switch flipped to ON for facetime over cellular. Both phones work perfectly over cellular.

I also checked a few coworkers phones, all now have FT over cellular.
We've seen some users on Twitter however who say Facetime over Cellular still isn't working for them. I've asked AT&T for their official position and to confirm that this is not an accidental change.

The company's Facetime shenanigans have been criticized heavily by consumer advocate groups, who insisted AT&T was violating the FCC's rather meek network neutrality rules by prohibiting what applications end users could use. AT&T tried to argue that what they were doing was within the confines of the rules, insisting that it's fine for the carrier to tinker or block applications -- provided it was pre-loaded on a device.

That defense was seen as a rather flimsy one by consumer advocates, who pointed out the FCC's rules include no such caveats. Nearly six months later and AT&T appears to have reconsidered the legal bedrock they believed they were standing on.

No go here...

I tried enabling Facetime over cellular and received the same message about requesting an active Wi-Fi connection or an eligible cellular data plan.

According to the Apple fan sites there seems to be a lot of mixed results on this one. I can't enable Facetime over cellular either on my grandfathered unlimited iPhone 5.

Maybe we should sue them? Get in before they change their minds?

Re: No go here...

I'm going to switch to a shared data plan sometime in the near future anyway, so it's not a big deal.

The price is lower even getting 6GB and we use ~3GB between the two of us in a bad month. Plus then I can tether my iPad.

to my understanding the ip4 does not support FT over cellular. This is true for the Verizon CDMA version of IP4 and _may_ be the same for the GSM version.

According to AT&T you have to restart your device for the changes to take effect.

Sounds like they are also hearing reports of it happening on 4S iPhones also

No go here on my 4S with unlimited.

I rebooted my 4S this morning. I didn't try a hard reset though, but that shouldn't be necessary.

No dice her either!
Powered my 4S off and then back on again -- still pops up the message to contact AT&T.

Stick with AT&T?

I just don't understand why anyone would support a company that does nothing but screw customers over. AT&T has done nothing but cut services to their customers and people just continue to pay them month fees. They screw customers over on data and then expect them to be happy about it.

Because some people (like me) have never had a single issue with them. I always get great signal anyplace I go, and always get someone on the phone as soon as I call if I do have an issue. And any issue is always taken care of.

Perhaps not the same thing but I never had a problem with companies like Enron. Still, if I knew they were evil I'd not do business with them. Of course we also need to consider that this might be a case of the lesser of evils as I don't think there is a "good" cell company in the US.

Pretty much. I've found that down here in South Florida, AT&T is the best choice for wireless mobile. Great coverage and great speeds.

Facetime isn't a deal breaker for me -- if I can use it over cellular, great, otherwise, no biggy.

Re: Stick with AT&T?

Or just use Google +?

That is, I wonder if AT&T blocks that.

My guess is that a few AT&T attorneys told AT&T that they were just asking for more lawsuits aganist them in blocking/charging for facetime.

Re: Stick with AT&T?

Only Facetime is blocked for cellular use. According to AT&T, they have the right to restrict any pre-installed applications, such as FT. Google+, Skype, etc aren't blocked as they aren't pre-installed.

Works For Me!

I have confirmed that the off/on trick does work. I tested it out with the girlfriend five minutes ago. Looks like they are turning the options on slowly.

Reboot worked for me as well with my iPhone 5. Before the reboot the option was off and afterwards it was on.

Funny thing is if I turn the option off then back on I again get prompted stating I must have a qualified data plan.

Works on my 4s (ATT 12.0) grandfathered unlimited in Lake Wales, FL. Aside from playing around with it one time over WIFI, I don't use FT and it was turned off in settings. Upon reading this topic, I decided to try it and much to my surprise it was already turned on. Still have no use for it though.

Doesn't work on my iPhone 5 running 6.0.1 with unlimited data.

My carrier profile is AT&T 13.0. Could someone who has it working after a reboot please go to Settings -> General -> About and check their "Carrier" version?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is that you will see those with unlimited data gradually being allowed in but it will not be "officially" announced by CSRs.

Why I have no idea.

FaceTime over Cellular active for grandfathered iPhones

I was just checking my iPhone 4S and it is showing that FaceTime is On under Use Cellular Data for: under General - Cellular.

I double checked by going to General - FaceTime, and here too it shows On for "Use Cellular Data".

Last time I fully powered down and started the phone back up was this morning.
