AT&T Really Suddenly Loves Android
Even If They Cripple Devices And Make Them Less Attractive
You'll recall for a while now AT&T has offered a select number of Android phones, though the company ruined many of them by removing functionality, crippling features, and adding bloatware. Now that AT&T's exclusive iPhone partnership is over, it's interesting to see AT&T arguing that they've seen the light, and really, really love the Android platform. "They create highly functional, highly capable smartphones that run really well with our network," Chief Marketing Officer David Christopher tells the Wall Street Journal. The fact these "highly functional, highly capable" smartphones are sometimes less functional and capable when AT&T's done with them escapes Christopher:
quote:
"The Atrix is the best example of that," he said. "We got involved very early in development of that product with Motorola and Google." However, the company isn’t looking to do all kinds of work to customize Android. "We don’t think we have to control every element of the smartphone at all," he said. "Our strategy has been more to partner smartly and add value where we think we have the strongest assets to bring to bear."
Except again, unmentioned is the fact that AT&T's pricing of the potentially-revolutionary Motorola Atrix netbook/smartphone hybrid is getting ripped apart by the press, and again -- AT&T can't help but stand dumbly in the way of a good thing.

No Atrix for Me

I was waiting for the Atrix only to find out that the laptop dock would be outrageously priced with a monthly tethering fee added on. The main reason to buy the phone is the laptop dock and the multimedia dock ($200). I refuse to pay that kind of money and then another $240/year fee for the privilege of using it.

Way to kill a product before it even launches ATT.

Same thing Mot/VZ is doing with the Xoom. Seems like every time the designers and engineers try to come up with exciting new products, the suits in corporate screw the pooch with moves like this.

These dopes need to realize it's a waste of time to generate buzz over exciting new products that in the end are let downs for knowledgeable consumers.

Two days in a row, WAY TO GO!

Get the HD dock instead. Much cheaper. No tethering fees from AT&T. But it still lets you use your TV monitor, wireless mouse, & wireless keyboard to access apps on the big screen.

They’re also offering an “Entertainment Access Kit” which’ll run for $190 (on top of the cost of the phone) and come packed with a Motorola HD Multimedia Dock, a Bluetooth® keyboard and mouse, and a remote control.

Motorola should quit the phone business, does what it does best, radios.

Leave the phones to the pros, HTC in Taiwan. Motorola hasn't ever made a great phone since the StarTAC days.

Motorola has three good phones Droid, Droid X and Droid 2/Global. The original Droid changed the Android Market for Phones.

Now, I do think they should quit after the comment a few weeks back stating "Custom Roms arent welcome, so buy a different phone".

I personally root my phones and use custom roms. I had Droid 1 and Droid X before going to T-Mobile. I missed Full Custom Roms on Droid X, but now I have them with my G2.

I love my captivate once I rooted it and installed a custom tom that fixed all of its problems

Enabled hsupa, installed froyo, got gps working correctly, enabled wifi hotspot, enabled non market sources

I'all beilieve when they stop disabling all sorts of features pile they did on the captivate, because once those problems were fixed it is vastly superior to the iPhone

Hmmm...

IF AT&T is smart (I know, stop laughing) they'll play Android's strength's against the iPhone's weakness and deliver a non-crippled device that isn't restricted by some executive's idea of a "user experience" that reflects that executive and that executive only (yes, Mr. Jobs I'm talking to you).

The Symbian OS has more apps than the iPhone has but until Ovi came along, no one had really tried to organize them all into an easy to use marketplace (and it still isn't as comprehensive as iTunes. Quite a few indie Symbian vendors only sell their apps on their own sites that aren't connected to Ovi).

With Android set to take away Symbian's lunch in the next few months (if present rends continue--and I have no doubt they will) AT&T has an excellent opportunity to blow past iTunes with more apps from more creators that truly allow the end user the freedom to create the ultimate User Experience. Better experience = more customers = more money for AT&T.

You will notice from the blue tint to my face that I'm NOT holding my breath here waiting for that to happen.

Inevitable

They have to get on Android. It's the dominant phone OS period and growing. Apples market-share actually dropped year over year worldwide and android now has more than double apples market-share with no signs of losing steam yet. So as nice as it may have been for them to try and run their business around a niche player (iphone), it's not really sustainable.

Hopefully they will stop gimping their Android phones. The reason people pick Android over the iphone is that it does far more, so long as the carrier doesnt get in the way.

Really? You've done market research to show that people pick android over iPhone is because it does far more? Would LOVE to see some stats on that.

But back to reality. I don't think you really know why people chose one over the other.. I'm sure you over look many factors such as

- It's not apple and not everyone loves apple
- They're not just only on AT&T and some people don't like AT&T
- They are cheaper and easier to get into than an iphone. BIG reason.
- iPhone only has a virtual keyboard and not everyone likes them.

... shall I go on?

One fatal flaw people make while cheer-leading one phone over another is that no one has to be dominant, including apple. People say that apple has to step up their game and catch up to android, however, apple continues to be the first to the market with things that everyone else has to jump on the bandwagon LATER to bring one to market. (iPhone, tablets, etc) And, apple is doing very well on their "limited" market share.. they are extremely profitable, and the way apple has run their business, I doubt that's going to change anytime soon.

I think google has much to catch up to, in many ways.

Re: All too true...

The only version of Cog Froyo to fully enable HSUPA(2.3 b7) was horribly unstable, slow, with crappy GPS. Other versions were slower with worse GPS. Try Killer23d's with jk3 modem. Very fast, stable, and great battery life. It even shows an H for HSUPA, like Galaxy S phones for the rest of the world. Btw, jk3 is the Canadian modem firmware. Same bands as the US with no mods, but without the crippling. No complaints about my Captivate since finding this ROM. It was the best performer for Flash video, thus far.

How bad these companies suck

A friend of mine returned from years of living in California. He has an iPhone he came from a area that had 4G service. In his case he has seen first hand just how crappy things can get. He was going to go to Verizon except for the fact their service in Cheyenne is not any better the AT&T. He wouldn't gain much with an Android phone either. With the growing number of WiFi hotspots in Cheyenne my iPod Touch gets ever more handy. I really don't care about phone calls I can use a cheap pre-paid cell phone for that. The Touch does just fine and I don't have the hassle of putting up with crappy telcos. It would be interesting if somebody made an Android version of the "Touch" I would love to try one

Your wish is coming soon. Samsung is releasing a Galaxy S like device without the cellular radio stuff.

Cheyenne is funny for ATT users since they have no native coverage there. Tmo,vzw, and sprint do though.

Android is so open, it's corrupted by carriers

You Android fan boys can't just understand that your so called openness is what is destroying your OS. Basically, Google is letting the carriers do whatever they want to damage and cripple your device. And for those who keep buying Droids and others will continue to promote it.

So far, only the so called Google phones on T-Mobile tend to be the ones least messed with.

But if you really want a mobile OS that let's a user customize without even being a geek or hacker, come on the WebOS bandwagon. Remember tho, might not be so much room come Feb 9. That's right. HP will bring WebOS to the masses and you will see what a real open OS is really like.

Re: Android is so open, it's corrupted by carriers

Obviously you have not been around long.. it does not matter what platform, if it is being sold by a carrier, then it will be picked apart, and butchered to the carriers liking, WebOS is no different.

The upside to GSM (Tmo and ATT) is that atleast you can purchase a third party phone, regardless of platform, and use it as long as you have the appropriate frequency ranges.

As for Android, sure the carriers are screwing with it, same with the iphone, but we can undo those customizations relatively easily, my Captivate is a prime example, I am running 2.3 with no restrictions whatsoever, and whatever apps I want, outside the walled gardens of ATT... Currently, Android and to some extent the iPhone are the best options if you want to break out of the carrier restricted worlds as their are plenty of hacks and customizations, and once WebOS gains developer support, it will also have the same options.

Re: Android is so open, it's corrupted by carriers

You are a little off in your comment. Sure Vz and Sprint WebOS devices have carrier apps. But, those are VERY easy to hide. Besides the apps, WebOS devices have no sign of tampering. It's vanilla all the way.

In addition, while everyone takes chances are bricking their phones with custom ROMS that need to be updated for each update, I will customize with patches and do OTA updates that DO NOT affect my customization.

For all of WebOS hacks and the like, check out WebOS Internals. The only homebrew community INVITED to speak at an official developer event. That my friend is called support.

I love the webOS interface and product (owned a Palm Pre before my Android), but unfortunately, Palm has suffered from the worst advertising department *ever*. The masses like shiny stuff, and ads that actually highlight product features.

The platform's problem is a giant catch-22:
• Produce superior product, but do f***-all for advertising.
• No new users flock to the product since iOS/Android marketing is everywhere.
• App developers ignore the platform since it has a low OS presence.
• Marketing pulls head out of ass much to late. Now new users aren't picking up the devices because of "no apps".

HP's not fairing to do much better, making their mega-release within a week or two of the big iPhone push. Any sales momentum they might generate is going to be lost behind the "it" phone craze.

Methinks WebOS architecture is better than iPHone and Android but they don't have the developer following and therefore few apps. webOS has no chance but it definitely doesn't suck. The phones kinda do though. If they would have put out a >4" 4G phone last summer before EVO, they probably would still be a player.

And this is a revelation?? This issue has really angered people who use Android based devices. Each provider locks in their version of the Android OS and you have to play games to upgrade it anything like the latest version. People bitch and moan about Steve Jobs and the "Fortress of Apple" but I know I have the latest OS, I know if I get an App it is not going to be malware. That's not to say the app it self is going to be worth anything but that is another issue.

Re: Android is so open, it's corrupted by carriers

You also forget to mention something in your post... people don't buy devices FOR THEIR android O/S... many people have put themselves in a position in which they are not "in" to begin with. Android is not marketed to the general public as something they can download and put on their "device" such as a software program can be purchased and installed on any PC based computer. Android is an open mobile O/S that's used BY the handset makers/mobile carriers to offer to THEIR customers. Android is openware which is very much open to changes and customization by the carriers.

I'm sure if people want an android based experience that meets their needs and wants that android to operate out of the box as google made it for THEIR devices, I'm sure they can go get a device made and get a copy of android and do it themselves..

...until then, Android is put out there for developers and handset makers.. not the general public.

You may be right that webos is less tampered with than Android
But given the amounts of apps available for Android visa webos
I'll take Android any day, and even with the tampering you can still
Customize 10x more than on and iPhone

Also as long as you stay away from motorola installed custom rooms is fairly safe on an htc or samsung phone and you wind up with an amazing phone
Just stay away from the really bleeding edge rome and stick will a clean tom
I run cognition on my captivate and it runs circles around any iPhone or wenos phone

It's very easy to retain customers

Just fix the network. Seriously.

It's not even about the coverage. Calls simply drop for no reason. Even on a microcell. Data is slow when you're in many parts of NYC or close to it.

Address these main points and you'll have loyal customers.

No iPhone ads lately?

Ever notice that the at&t iPhone ads have practically ceased while Windows Mobile 7 and Android devices have accelerated?

I just find it ironic that, since Verizon now has the iPhone, at&t has lost interest on the device that kept them alive all these years.

IMO

Xoom is fairly priced. What is UNFAIR is the way people are comparing it to the 550 dollarish IPAD's price range.

Xoom is not the 550.00 Ipad folks. Your talking dual core processors..larger AND MUCH nicer screen..double the memory that is also expandable..4G...the latest android operating system..
front and rear cameras..

Again..no comparison at all.
Xoom wins hands down in price and features and at 799.00, for someone who WANTS one..it's a steal IMHO.

Me..I don't want one. Nor any tablet for that matter.

What I DO want though is a Motorola Atrix. Now that is one sweet smartphone. I agree..the laptop dock is too expensive..but the hd dock isn't. There was an article somewhere showing a link to it selling for 50 bucks I think. Or, for 190 you can get the whole package with mouse..keyboard..remote as well.
IMO..this smartphone is really revolutionizing both home and mobile computing and tying them together finally as one.

In any event..I think motorola has stepped up to the plate and is putting out some awesome designs lately since the whole droid rollout. And AT&T is smart to be jumping on board.

Kind of old news no?

AT&T has been moving towards diversifying their smartphone lineup for a while, since fall of last year or so.
