AT&T Says Some Customers in Nashville Will See 1 Gbps
by Karl Bode 12:33PM Monday Jul 28 2014
Last week, AT&T announced that the company would be bringing its 1 Gbps "Gigapower" service to portions of Dallas. Now, according to a new announcement by the company, AT&T states they'll also eventually be offering 1 Gbps connectivity to at least some customers in Nashville, Tennessee. "Specific locations of availability and pricing for the Nashville market will be announced at a later date," notes the company. As noted in detail, AT&T remains ambiguous about precise deployment numbers because they're only planning to target very select, high-end development communities for this ultra-fast service, but wants the public relations benefit of the perception of a much larger deployment.

Other possible markets in Tennessee

Also from the press release:
quote:
On April 21, 2014, AT&T announced a major initiative to expand its ultra-fast AT&T GigaPower fiber network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 markets nationwide (»about.att.com/story/att_eyes_100···ork.html). As part of that announcement, AT&T said it is also considering five other Tennessee areas – Clarksville, Franklin, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Spring Hill as candidate municipalities for the service.
If so, AT&T may be competing in some of the same TN markets as EPB, as they are looking to expand their service to more areas around Chattanooga:

Re: Other possible markets in Tennessee

Even if EPB was given the green light to proceed with expansion Nashville would likely not be on their list. It's too far away and there are way to many communities to cherry pick along the way.

Well, they're not lying.

DSL customer in Nashville will see 10-20 people in a ritzy apartment complex get Gigapower.

Really want and dont want at the same time

I live in Nashville and would really like to see this but the main reason I want an option besides Comcast is to escape data caps and unfortunately they will probably have a cap (1 TB) like they do in Austin. Yes 1 TB is better than 300 GB but I want no cap without having to pay out the ass for it.

Living in a market that is about to get eaten up by Comcast it is my understanding that they're not enforcing/don't have caps. What gives?

Re: Really want and dont want at the same time

It is 300GB per month with $10 per 50GB over. Three months per year if you go over its ignored. As far as if it effects your market that's something you have to research. I know Nashville has been in the "testing market" for this since 08/09 and they added Memphis earlier this year. The only way you can buy out of it is if you go business class but it will be slower, more expensive and be under a contract.

Dang. That sucks! When TWC tried to implement caps in Greensboro, they got laughed out of town and haven't tried it since.

Maybe with the guise of Google Fiber rolling into town this will keep them from doing it here.

Re: Really want and dont want at the same time

Nashville was also in that list of possible cities and Comcast has not changed jack. I think the only way they would is if it was confirmed to come rather than a maybe promise.

Google is rolling into where? Charlotte? GSO? Hardly, they only sent out RFPs on what they'd require. Nothing has been signed and it still could be YEARS before a network is even started to be constructed. Austin isn't even ready and was mentioned by Karl on a blog post that it was behind. Hell they're still doing their original build in KC.

I thought Kansas City proper was finished. (Both Kansas and Missouri)

Re: comcast

At best move it up to 500 at worst and probably most likely it will do nothing.

Must be Nice

Considering I live in middle TN and can not get wired internet whatsoever as well as many others perhaps they could put forth effort into actually servicing peoples homes instead of doing this PR stunt.

Re: Must be Nice

Having lived without a wired internet option in a middle class subdivision, I do not believe those currently without wired internet will ever see wired internet sans a municipal option or winning the Google Fiber lottery.

it did expand, and is available. Those providers never said how much you had to pay to get it.

Where did it expand and where is it now available that it was not before. Comcast is less than a mile away from me and last I checked they haven't expanded whatsoever!

Where? Certainly not in VA. Vz promised to bring fiber to every home in VA and it never happened.

w00t!

i probably don't live in enough of a "high-end" development community, but still.... we need more competition desperately! i can say, living here, that i have seen a boatload of AT&T trucks around in the last 6 months, and even had some people from AT&T stop by the house & tell one of my roomates that they were doing work in the area.

though i wonder what the caps will look like?
